Layers of Conscience

Layers of Conscienceness

Peeling away the layers of conscienceness
to find what lies beneath,
I am startled by all there is to despise
for the weakness and self-debasement,
yet I find also wondrous characteristics I adore
for their beauty and integrity.
What moment that I move through,
touched by these contrasting prisms,
that might obliterate the hateful pathos
and nurture the luminous strength?
Jagged memories of my anguish,
nauseating pictures of my subjegation,
these clench my teeth in disgust
biting through tongue
to taste the salt of my tears.
Yet, and yet...
what wondrous joy to find
some glimmer of shining hope;
that growth spurs growth
and anything is then possible
to a woman reborn
to herself.
