Hearts Song
05 May 99
Try to gentle your soul; try to sing your heart’s song,
throaty and fervent.
Though it is jangled, at times,
broken at heart,
it is real and true.
Give me a moment to understand better what I gain.
Strike down the daemons that bite the esteem,
and find the ocean breeze that strokes the soul.
I fought my way here
vale of tears floating me onward
as I fought the current at every bend,
and wonder that it never ends.
Struggle each relationship I enter
to find the health lurking within the depths.
Why do I allow each marauding pirate, each harmful heart
access to this giving soul,
when I know the requirements I need –
examples in each dear friend?
I jump down this life
hoping to eventually encounter that soul
understanding heart, gentle love, strong being
that will love the child in me
harmed psyche, tentative trust, trembling uncertainty
and tell me true.
