The Sojourn

Dedication: To God and Man and to my parents
Inspiration: Helping a friend- Sagar Kandhari

When God sent man to seek his dignity,
Tender and primal was their affinity.
He sent us sagacious to discover a new life,
Where we could penance by a little strife.
He saved us from ignominy with great belief,
But, we led him to the pyre of deceit.
He made us adherents but we became avengers,
He made the divine Nature for us but we became its scavengers.
Beauty was made to be extolled,
But, by our materialism it was overhauled.
Idols were not made to fester,
We were to be admirers, not jesters.
Today, we have become long on quantity, but short on quality.
We have fancier houses but broken homes,
We break rules, regulations and norms.
We have been all the way to the moon and back,
But the knack for a walk we certainly lack.
We have trouble crossing the road to meet the new neighbour,
We earnestly detest the words ‘hard work’ and ‘labour’.
We have split the atom but not our prejudice,
We have utterly misunderstood bliss.
We have learned how to make a living but not a life,
We have not instilled peace in us, just spice.
Years have been added to our life, not life to years,
We have murdered humanity with sharp shears.
Chivalry and valour were not to be won with blood;
Love and intimacy under our feet have been trudged.
Morals and values have been fatigued,
Wisdom and kindness have suffered defeat.
We have disguised knowledge with obscenity,
Fooled around with joy and lost our serenity.
Yet the Almighty anticipates our well being,
He protects, forgives and grants the Earth, the much-needed sheen.
This temporary journey on the land to which we belong,
Is the ever-enlightening sojourn.
