NATIONAL MILS WEEKEND 9th/10th MAY 2008
On Saturday 9th/10th May, it is NATIONAL MILLS WEEKEND, and over the last 20 years this Windmill at Wicken in Cambridgeshire has been restored from a ruin to one of Britain’s most successful and productive mills.
Volunteers travel from as all over the country from as far a field as Leicestershire, Berkshire, Kent, Suffolk, Lincolnshire and Suffolk such is their commitment to this project, and have been involved in every aspect of the repair from carpentry to metal casting.
Wicken Windmill is in the centre of the village of Wicken miles South East of Ely. Wicken is probably the only village in the country with two working traditional windmills.
The mill will be open for visitors and to buy flour, postcards and books over this special weekend.
Admission is by donation.
Another special visit to Wicken Fen can be made to see the other windmill in the village. Here at the National Trust Centre, is a car-park, cafe and toilets.
The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) was founded by William Morris 125 years ago to care for and preserve the UK’s architectural heritage. Since its foundation, SPAB has been committed to maintenance matters, in line with William Morris’ exhortation to: "Stave off decay by daily care." Today it is a dynamic organization, and registered charity (no 111 3753.), taking building conservation into the future.

The SPAB Mills Section was founded in 1931 to protect the hundreds of traditional windmills and watermills from proposals to demolish or damage them each year, campaigns for the sympathetic repair of mills, and works to return buildings and machinery where possible to working order. It runs courses which enable Mills to be kept in a good state of repair through skilled maintenance. To find out more visit www.spabmills.org.uk
