"Horses in My Life"
The Early Years

"Sandy"

That's me at age 12 with Sandy (age 10) in the 60s. She was a real nice former 4-H horse owned by my dad's friends. Sandy was a palomino grade mare and I got to ride her many times. This photo was taken after a show she had been in. She "almost" got 6th place, but ended up not placing because she threw her head up and knocked off the handler's hat.

Here's Melody (age 3), with my dad's friend and me. She was a pretty bay registered Quarter Horse who's sister was a champion cutting horse. Melody was frisky and fast; too much for the average rider to handle. I never rode her.

"Sandy"

This is Sandy again. She was acting a little stubborn that day wanting to just go back to the barn. Notice the smirk on her face? It was hard to get her to stand still for this photo. Sandy was 11 and I was 13 in this shot.

What a great weekend camping this was!
I still love this place in the mountains that has a camping area for people with horses, and miles of mountain trails. That's Melody (age 5) with their owner on the left, and me (age 14) riding Sandy (age 12). Melody would practically run up the trails, and plunged into this river. There was no stopping that little mare. Sandy would politely try to keep up, but didn't really want to get any deeper into the water. She was a careful and gentle trail horse.

"Queenie"

This is Berreth's Queen a chestnut Welsh Mountain Pony that I loved to ride at camp in the summer. She is shown here at age 9 and was in foal to Berreth's Stormy (not a camp pony). Queenie was a fast trotter, hardly ever breaking into a canter. She was harness broke and would pull kids around in a pony wagon. She had 2 foals when I knew her, Berreth's Princess Lwyd and Berreth's King. Her slightly swayed back and rounded shape made for a very comfortable bareback ride. She was definitely the "Queen bee" of the camp ponies, as she protected her favorite stall and played the role of herd leader. (I was 13 here.)

Here's another favorite pony from camp, Berreth's Star Blaze at age 2. He was Chic's second foal and born dark gray with a star and a blaze, so some local girls named him Star Blaze. Blaze was always such a sweet pony around kids. He was very fast and kids loved to race him to the end of the small pasture. He was my favorite pony for riding and for personality. He would always come over to the fence to be petted when you called him.

"Chic" and "Queenie"

Here's a cute photo of the 2 main pony mares from camp, Revel Chic a palomino, with Berreth's Queen. They were good friends (most of the time) except when Queenie got uppity about her stall or feed. Chic's first foal was a strawberry roan named Lady Dixie. Her second foal, born the next year, was Star Blaze (above).

This is Lady Dixie (age 3), Berreth's Queen (age 11)  and Berreth's Princess Lwyd (age 4). Princess had a gray filly named April, that she would not allow to nurse very often. April had to be bottle fed and was always quite small.

"Benny"

This is Benjamin Revel or Benny as the kids called him. He was Chic's third and last foal. Also a very sweet and gentle boy. He's shown here at age 2.
