This is the adorable other world of Holy Trinity, Goodramgate. The church is without electricity and in care of the Church Conservation Fund. It contains some of the best stained glass I have ever seen, and was the highlight of my trip to York. It is a bit chilly inside and does get a few tourists, but even those factors could not totally dampen the spirituality of the place. There is an advent carol service by candlelight here which I imagine would be magical.
Below is the famed East window of Goodramgate. Donated in the 1470s, it is one of the many jewels of York, a city which contains more medieval stained glass than the rest of Britain put together. I could go into the iconography of the window, but I will instead relate a little devotional anecdote: while standing in front of this window I had a brief moment of returning in time to the Middle Ages, and in one split second could feel their faith, their piety, their naivety, their artistry and their high imagination.
