Below is the famed East window of Goodramgate. Donated in the 1470s, it is one of the many jewels of York, a city which contains more medieval stained glass than the rest of Britain put together. I could go into the iconography of the window, but I will instead relate a little devotional anecdote: while standing in front of this window I had a brief moment of returning in time to the Middle Ages, and in one split second could feel their faith, their piety, their naivety, their artistry and their high imagination. |
