| Wiggle breaks wrist
11 Dec 2004 THE future of Australia's biggest-selling children's entertainment group was in jeopardy yesterday as it was revealed the blue Wiggle had been performing with a broken wrist. Anthony Field, who wears the blue skivvy and was instrumental in forming the Wiggles, was forced to pull out of the group's Brisbane performance. No longer able to perform the group's signature move, the double-finger wiggle, he will undergo surgery on his wrist early next week. The Wiggles' general manager Paul Field said Anthony sustained the injury while on stage in New York when a prop fell on his wrist. He said the wrist's ligaments would need to be surgically repaired and Anthony would be unable to perform with the Wiggles for the rest of the year. Mr Field said Anthony had risked "permanent damage" by continuing to regularly wave his hands about. Blue Wiggle understudy Brett Clarke filled in for Anthony at the three Brisbane shows yesterday. Mr Field said the change was explained to the audience and the under-age patrons had taken the news well. "Children are very flexible like that," he said. "We haven't had to (substitute performers) very often over the 13 years but occasionally it does happen -- a baby might be born or someone's relative is very sick or we get injured." Mr Field said he expected Anthony to regain full use of his wrist. |
