ABC theme park proposed for Melbourne
An ABC theme park featuring Bananas in Pyjamas, the Wiggles and other children's characters may be built in Melbourne.

The nine hectare entertainment precinct has been proposed as part of the $300 million redevelopment of the Royal Melbourne Showgrounds.

Under the plan the sets of popular ABC children's television shows like The Saddle Club would be recreated and the showgrounds train could be turned into a Thomas the Tank Engine ride.

The ABC has been considering the plan for four years.

Victorian Premier Steve Bracks says the ABC's proposal would be welcomed.

"The ABC's quite able, willing and welcome to apply as part of the tender process for this project area," he said.

"If they want to be involved in one of the tenderers applications we will assess that objectively on its merits."
