Wiggles about
2 July 1998 THOUSANDS of kids with their young at heart companions flocked to see The Wiggles in town on Wednesday. Tony Terry, The Examiner’s photographer, had a tough time wriggling his way through the 7000 strong crowd at Westfield Shopping Town Fountain Gate. But his efforts were rewarded. The Wiggles’ legion of fans stood transfixed as the colorful quintet, including Captain Feathersword, performed for around 10 minutes. For the next two hours the youngsters clamoured for autographed copies of The Wiggles Movie on video, which the lads were in town to promote. Already more than 50,000 copies have been sold since its release last week - setting a record for Fox. The Wiggles have sold 1.4 million video copies across six titles, sold 700,000 CDs and $2.6 million in tickets at the box office and performed to one million people a year. They average 500 performances a year. The Wiggles’ juggernaut came together seven years ago when pre-school teachers Greg Page (yellow Wiggle), Anthony Field (blue) and Murray Cook (red) began creating musical projects for the Early Childhood Education unit at a Sydney university. They were joined shortly after by keyboard player Jeff Fatt (of ‘Wake up Jeff! fame). |
