Facts about the Eastern Bluebird

The eastern bluebird male has a deep blue back, rusty red throat and breast, and white under its tail. The female is much duller. Juvenile bluebirds have spotted breasts. They love to eat insects and seed from bird feeders. Bluebirds nest in natural tree cavities, often in old woodpecker holes or in a birdhouse. They make their nest out of grasses to hold 4 or 5 pale bluish white eggs. It takes about 15 days before the eggs hatch. The young leave the nest in about 3 weeks. Bluebirds usually have two broods of eggs. The best way to attract bluebirds is to put up bluebird houses.

The bluebird that lives near our yard loves to perch atop our basketball goal and survey the yard.
