Facts about the Red Tail Hawk

Red-Tailed Hawks are found across the country. It is a big, heavy bird with wide wings. Instead of swift darting pursuit, red tails depend on their sharp eyesight to spot prey on the ground beneath them. Dark brown birds, 1 1/2 feet tall with a 4-foot wingspan, red tails have snowy white bellies crossed by a streaked band of brown. The adults have a gorgeous red tail that shines chestnut when lit by the sun. Red tails prefer small mammals, although they do occasionally snack on birds. If mice or voles live in your gardens, one of these hawks may stop by for a quick lunch.
