SELF DISCOVERY

Finding Your Purpose in Life

The greatest thing in life is not where you are, but the direction in which you are moving.
Oliver Wendell Holmes

Becoming the Somebody You Were Created to Be

F. Miller and Ralph T. Mattson

Some people appear to have a destiny. Seeds of their eventual greatness were displayed so early that when fame came, the destiny seemed so obvious, the purpose so clear.

The idea of having a destiny, romantic and attractive as it is, seems reserved only for the famous few. However, what is true of the great ones is also true of you. You also have a purpose in life.

Signs of your purpose appeared very early in your life. If you were to go through your personal history, you could find a host of things which you did that were manifestations of the fact that you were already seeking to express your one purpose in life as a child.

Your life is good if it continues to fulfill your purpose in life, and bad if it does not. In order to discover what you want out of life, search your memory for things you have done which made you feel proud of yourself. Your learning experiences, recreation, hobbies, social life and community activities all reflect your self-expression. There are many reasons why you can be depressed, but a most common reason for depression, irritation, anxiety or frustration is when your purpose in life is locked. On the other hand, you experience joy, completeness and satisfaction when your purpose is being fulfilled. There is an enormous reward in health and happiness if you allow yourself to discover and use your talents to carry out your destiny.

If you look into the fine detail of your life, you will be amazed at what it reveals. An immediate benefit from having a goal in life can be an insight into whom you do not have time for and why; why you drag your feet on certain issues; why you are responsive to certain assignments and avoid others; what kinds of problems you leave unsolved, and what you attack.

Pulled by Your Inner Calling

John Robbins and Ann Mortifee

Just as the salmon must pursue its course upstream, drawn by some irresistible magnet toward its destiny, so does each human bing follow an inner calling. This inner calling speaks to you through your desires, your feelings, your intuitions, and your instincts. Just as a young child with a destiny to be a musician feels a powerful urge to play a certain instrument, so it is that those experiences that cause you to feel most alive are the very experiences that, when you listen to them, will lead you toward your destiny. You are being pulled forward by your own potential.

Ony by living in accord with your real desires can you become yourself. Any false sense of responsibility or duty only distracts you from the possibility and pleasure of discovering your true purpose in life.

When you have an inclination toward self-pity, and can be found complaining about your life, a core of truth usually underlies your behavior. Perhaps a pain that you carry is trying to draw your attention so that it may be acknowledged, and finally healed. The complaining is your wounded attempt to cry out for help. What is needed is a willingness to seek out and work with the pain that is hidden underneath the self-pity.
