University
of Arizona Wildcat Icers In 1999, The University of
Arizona made a new addition to its club teams. We are the Women’s Ice
Hockey club team and we proudly call ourselves the Wildcat Icers. The first
night of practice in October of 1999, there were 40 college girls lacing up
hockey skates for the very first time. We stumbled, fell, and collided, but
worked night after night until midnight or later. Five months later, the
Wildcat Icers skated off the ice at a Las Vegas tournament with a
championship trophy in the beginners’ division.
Our 1999-2000 inaugural
season was very successful. We played several teams including ASU, the San
Diego Heartbreakers, and the Tucson Chili Peppers. In our 2000-2001 season
we returned to Las Vegas, this time with two teams, we participated in a
tournament in Colorado, and we faced ASU in America West Arena, home of the
Phoenix Coyotes.
Each year our team
makes vast improvements. In the
first half of our 2001-2002 season we beat ASU for the first time and also
moved up to 4th place in the Colorado tournament. The second half of the
season was extremely action packed and very exciting for the Wildcat Icers.
We kicked off the semester by playing the University of Maryland in a three
game series with an outcome of 2-1. We finished the second half of the
season with a 14-1 record. The
highlight of the semester was our annual return to the Las Vegas
tournament. Both teams swept the tournament undefeated and skated away with
two championship titles in their respective divisions. Clearly the Icers is a team every
player loves and
takes great pride in. For a team that has been around
for only 3 short years, we have made amazing
accomplishments. In the fall of 2000, we even joined
the Women’s American Collegiate Hockey Association
(ACHA) in its first year to have a Women’s division.
Our team has drive, desire and determination, and most
of all a bright future.
