So far this year I've managed to bag 12 new routes, all in the VS/HVS grade on Craig y Neidr which will be going into the next Ogwen & Carneddau guide. This beautifully situated little outcrop should prove to be a pleasant alternative venue for seasoned climbers who will find it an ideal crag for a short day or a sunny evening. As I've still got some projects on the go, I'll not reveal too much about CyN yet but when it's all in the bag I'll publish a full guide to the crag including topos, photos and diagrams.....watch this space. |

John Fritz Sumner |
Sad news this spring with the news of the sudden death of Mid-Wales climbing king. John Sumner. In a climbing career spanning fifty years,John Sumner created his own climbing fiefdom amongst the lonely, beautiful hills and vallies of Mid Wales. With classic routes such as Doom.....Will o the Wisp....Strobe.....Keelhaul, amongst hundreds of others. Fritz who earned his sobriquet from no less a figure than Don Whillans, was also a formidable winter climber who, apart from his Mid Wales wnter exploits, also climbed regularly in The Alps and Canada. I only met the JS on one ocassion, that being the Climbers Club launch of the Meirionydd guide of which he had of course contributed a sizeable section. It was a fine evening all round as I sat next to his partner Jill during the launch meal and was honoured to be asked to sign his own personal copy of the guide. An incredible life which has left a lasting impression on all those who met him and whose climbing career will positively impact on future generations of climbers. |

Will Perrin |
Sad news that Will Perrin, son of Jim,passed away at home in Llanberis in early August. Will had become one of the main figures on the scene in Llanberis and his climbing exploits and enthusiasm had marked him out as something special in the North Wales climbing community. Sincere condolences to all his family and friends. |

Remarkable Lakeland mountain man, Harry Griffin died in July this year aged 93. Harry was a contempory of Wainwright although unlike his timid late friend,Harry was a mountaineering all rounder who established frequent first ascents in the area, was a guidebook writer, ski mountaineer, snow and ice climber as well as Guardian Country Diary writer for 50 years. Harry also was the author of 12 books on all aspects of Lakeland life including the future climbing classic, The Coniston Tigers...his final and best book. |

Craig y Eithin routes |
In early September Liam and I visited Craig y Eithin on the moorland plateau between Capel Curig and Crafnant to record the routes there for the forthcoming Ogwen/Carneddeu guide book. This beautiful 50' dolorite slab yeilded 4 routes...two leads each....for Liam and myself although I have no doubt that they will have been climbed before as they are only 500 yards from the Yeti Climbing Club hut. |
