The Arnold Family | |||||||||||||||||||
Flora Matilda McElhaney was born in Sioux City Iowa on May 18, 1868. She was the daughter of James McElhaney (born 1824 in Virginia) and Nancy McElhaney (born 1824 also in Virginia). James and Nancy also had two sons (Francis and Alfred) and two other daughters (Lucinda and Ella). On the 1880 Iowa census they were living at Perry, Plymouth County Iowa and James was farming. . The picture on the left was taken on Flora's wedding day. She married John Wesley Arnold. I do not know the date or the place. I also can't identify the two people on the right who stood up with them in the picture. |

John Wesley and Flora moved to Minnesota after they were married. John was a logger and a farmer and while in Minnesota they had at least 7 children. Sometime around 1902 they moved to the Hyas Saskatchewan area and homesteaded. They had 5 more children including Edward Ernest Arnold, our father. The Archives of Canada Western Land Grants (1870-1930) listsJames Wesley Arnold as claiming the NE part of section 1, township 34 and range 3 west of the second meridian and also the NE part of section 6, township 9, range 18 west of the 2nd meridian.

By 1930 Edward was 16 and living with his aunt Ella McElhaney Reiter and her husband Herman and son Bernard in Centerville South Dakota. Flora was 60 years old and woking as a housekeeper in Garfield Township, Clay County South Dakota. I believe that she had Robert A. (13 years old) with her, though they call him Frank on the census. I am not sure why. I do not have any information as to where John Wesley was at that time. Perhaps he stayed in Hyas. The picture at right is Edward E. 16, Flora and Robert A. 13 and was taken in Centerville. |

The photograph on the left shows (standing) Robert A. Arnold, Edward E. Arnold. Kneeling from left are Cecil (Percy) Arnold, James Arnold and I believe, George Arnold. I do not know when the picture was taken but I would assume sometime in the 1930's.
