Chapter 7

Awareness The Common Link

It is not for me to know what God is, since if I knew I would be a god myself.  We cannot define God.  Consider the rabbit endeavouring to figure out the exact nature of humans.  But the rabbit is aware of humans nevertheless, and does have an idea of their power.  It senses the danger and the safety within them, a common communication both share.

Awareness gives us the chance to communicate with life: to observe our own growth and the process of creation itself.  Its reaches vary from an idea to a state of full enlightenment.  Whether God is a purposeful intelligence or an automatic one does make a difference, but to see God as a power of non-intelligence is to declare at the same time that understanding does not exist, because it takes intelligence to reach understanding.

Suppose a thing was able to work automatically without first being arranged by thought; all that it does, the flavour and the quantity of its output, the information itself would have no meaning, and the continuous directions would have no aim.  It may be said to run under an automatic non-intelligence.  The fact that thought exists is a fact that God exists.  If earth functioned through an automatic non-intelligence, we and all about us would be just so many blocks of stone: being devoid of awareness, and created to function automatically, without the awareness that brings satisfaction and dissatisfaction, we would be living like robots.

Again, suppose there is no Creator, that all life just came about.  Then what is it that operates the process; or why does it move from one state to another to bring about change? There must be motivation behind that which comes about.  And what is motivation? It is the expansion of thought into action.  It is from the well-spring of awareness that we get motivation.  It is possible to plan an automatic recovery for occurrences needing adjustments, but planning requires specific thought operating free and spontaneous, without the limitations imposed by pure automation which is the movement from one step to another without the advantage of choice.

If nature is automatic then everything is being done for us.  It is not we who are driving ourselves to work each day, we are not doing the chores, cooking the dinner or eating the dinner: it is happening because it has to happen.  We are like toys wound up and moving accordingly.  To say that this world has been created automatically is to say that everything is willed and in blue print awaiting its time of emergence, that there is no free will in destiny.  It would mean that we live in a world of reaction and that action does not exist.

So there is a Creator or an automatic Intelligence at work; having wound up all life in motion, this Power sits down to admire the action which cannot be too exciting since every move is already known.  The loneliness to be derived from one-sided participation cannot be satisfactory to such a Creator.  On the other hand, there is variety and versatility to be found in a Creator with a free will.  We use both free will and automatic direction in the course of our lives because Creation is made up of both.  The intelligence of a child who writes a good essay or the scientist who makes a breakthrough leading up to a treasury of answers, comes from the All Awareness.  All is at one and the same time with limit and without limit and the whole in itself is but a part of an infinite whole, a force uncreated, timeless and boundless.

Granted that full awareness would choose to work with order, in as much as there is no room for mislaid faultiness in its imperishable engineering feat: it does not accommodate corruption, but sets down construction and destruction and uses objectivity and subjectivity or grace; all, in the exact places.  Full awareness is synonymous with full justice and operates with a pure conscience.  It points to a just Creator.  We have a God who can choose and not choose to be surprised by the thoughts and actions coming from the free will given to us.  The character of an artist may be trapped in his or her paintings, but the nature of God is trapped in divine works, and also is not trapped; because His works have been given a free will that may be totally uninfluenced by Divinity: wanton war and destruction is a human trait, hence we are able to see God and we are also unable to see God.

Under creative or natural law, we are unable to choose our birth.  It shows that we are vulnerable; but we are compensated by way of having possession of a free will and it is only ourselves or our concepts of right and wrong that can block our path to psychic rebirth.  We can use this free will and go where it leads us, up or down.  To handle this will we were given intellect; and food for the intellect can be found as near as our elbows.

Each of us may see a painting differently, and our differences are all valid because the painting does have all that is recognized by each one of us.  It has emotion which appeals to our emotion, just as nature has emotion which attracts us.  Emotion is there in atmosphere; in nature's landscape and in man-made edifices.  It is a force related to and stemming from an all encompassing force.  We have it because it was used in building us.

We are fed by our emotions in a particular way through our reflections.  The rose and the lily may motivate us to joy or sadness, the lion inspires fear and it fears, the young inspires affection and it loves, the butterflies - lightness, the beetle may bring to mind weight, and the birds freedom.  Emotion triggers fascination or revulsion; it thrives in extremity; it seeks destruction or it seeks enlightenment beyond reason; it seeks deliverance.

We have come to understand how and why physics and chemistry and mathematics react together, and how the atom works, but not what makes it work.  Matter must be capable of communicating with thought before any process takes place.  This would mean that awareness penetrates both thought and matter.  If we were to believe that intelligence is needed to operate the invisible atoms in our bodies, we must also consider that its nature is to make sense whether that sense follows a good or a bad direction.

Anything that makes any kind of sense arouses feelings, and who can deny that feelings are powerful and effective.  They direct and motivate and they use reason and emotion to get things done.  They also seek self preservation because they are acquainted with both love and fear.  We have an intelligence which can stand aside while we regenerate or degenerate physically or mentally.  The choice is ours to stir that inborn intelligence for our betterment.

All action and inaction of whatever nature are preceded by an intelligence that itself stems from an awareness that is.  Awareness is the source from which intelligence grows and is not automatic because it can be turned on and off at will.  Intelligence may be the imperfect instructor necessary for the purpose of change in the scheme of an organic creation: it can be made perfect by the human will to serve the human good in the human time and place.

To get a clear idea of anything, we must give it justice.  We know that creation is not faultless: that in not supplying the fruits with full immunity from invading bugs and all the other organic things, not the least of which are people, creation appears to us to be trapped by its own principles of justice.  Yet if creation was without fault, the very process of our thinking would be affected.  Our thoughts orbiting around the same perfection over and over,  endless change would not take place and the creativity that accompanies it.  We have the freedom to build our own growth in whatever way we choose - our homework cannot be done for us, otherwise there would be no real accomplishment, it would not be us.

The weak structure of abandoned duties, false promises and self centredness is liable to collapse to bring us down and others with us.  All mishaps are meant to teach, to open our minds, yet we can get well along without them.  The broader our awareness, the less our mishaps.  An interesting fact is that we can direct our human awareness whichever way we choose, granted that it is not warped.  It is sufficient to show us truth and justice and love.  We can see divine qualities in perishable mortals: a hint of God in man, and we can get to know perfection and endless joy merely because we see.  We can see evil and good, and our responsibility to live justifiably is as great as our awareness of our God.

When we put our best foot forward in destroying the harmful, protecting the harmless and encouraging the useful, we retain our powers of decerning good from evil.  We may understand a situation sufficiently to be able to use judgement, just as we are not required to know the whole of anything to love that thing, whether it is a person, a property or a situation.  Privacy is a warm blanket of protection that keeps us unique.  If it was possible to read someone as you would a book, you may then have the forces required to tear that one to pieces.  Is one still oneself if one is totally known inside and out by others? This would amount to self and societal eradication.  Natural Justice renders this inconceivable.  The blotter may saturate most of the ink, but the print remains faint nevertheless.

We hold on to the old self because it is us.  A person is capable of a change in personality, still one must build on layers of that old self.  To succeed in making over one's spouse is to get another person.  Privacy is the insulation we need physically and mentally against over encroachment.  We are always encroaching or being encroached upon to a point and feel it when it strangles us.  At the same time, when we are on the look out for our own necks, the full responsibility hits hard; while when there are others to think of, we are not aware of self, and encroachment becomes insignificant.

When, in spite of having most of our needs fulfilled, we remain dissatisfied, it could be as a result of past deprivation.  It is important to recognize strengths and weaknesses, to work at priorities, to find the inner need, to court wisdom and be free.  What is perhaps the universal Achilles heel in the personality, is to have to wait on the permission of another power in the drive to go forward or to achieve contentment despite one's own abundant ability.  Waiting for progress to come by, is not like waiting for a bus in what seems like endless time when the feet get tired and patience wears thin; but provokes another extreme, where the healthy spirit is put to droop.

The comfort of the mind must not be confused with the comfort of the body.  The latter is more easily satisfied.  Success may not bring satisfaction; but satisfaction covers all other acquisitions.  The super-person is designed to have maximum contentment with a minimum of discontent.  Habit develops satisfaction.  People who live in the Arctic have found satisfaction, and yes, people who starve because when all directions for improvement are pursued, when effort makes the rounds full circle, satisfaction settles in.  A lack of effort will emerge to build a storm till it subsides.  Permanent dissatisfaction is against the grain of man's hopeful nature.  Luxuries are momentary things dazzling like brilliant toys short-lived and easily faded, but satisfaction is an inside feeling that reaches down to touch and to shape personality.

To understand that which satisfies, and to reach for it is a self responsibility.  I am not unhappy because I need a new car or a well earned vacation.  I am unhappy because I am not communicating with the real me: where I stand and what I can do about it.  Being false to self can become a habit which goes to prevent self understanding.  The flaw in personality may be due to inherited ideology, the influence of the environment, or self creative: all these self deceptions being blockages to a natural awareness.

We cannot get along with ourselves or with others by feeling less, or by having wrong feelings.  My attitude must be as valid as possible to render me deserving of the air I breathe, and the physical pollution I give to mother earth.  I must therefore know myself: my good and my evil, my abilities and my limitations in order to avoid adding pollution to my own thoughts.  The frustrated person is a time-bomb; rub him anyhow and he blows a fuse and sends out negative vibrations which are liable to touch the sore spots of other surrounding minds proceeding further to set up a chain reaction of woe all around.

Dig in deeper into the emotions we have found, into the myriad branches that have been formed from them, into the nature of love and hate, and fear and ambition and their offsprings, and how best these can be utilized to our satisfaction; because, regardless of their humdrum names, we must use them every hour.  Courage and hope and dreams are rich resources, patience and tolerance and humour stand by, honour and pride await reality, worry and concern await relief, satisfaction and dissatisfaction seek discovery, habit eludes joy and maintains joy.  Love is a hundred percent feeling with basic ways of consummating itself and acquiring other unique ways of expression in accordance with the nature of varied personalities.

The basic feelings of love stand out, and unless ways are acquired to savour the abundance, it remains untutored.  If only you were here to hear this music with me, to view this splendour with me because I share myself with you.  Another view point: I do not fly sky high over music, but I will comb the city for you just to take you home in safety.  Big deal, I won't comb the city for you - you know your way around? I love you in so many ways - ways you won't understand.  The same here! Let's just have fun.  Sure!

Love thrives with or without compatibility.  It is at one and the same time a perfect state of total freedom and total imprisonment.  It encourages and accepts freedom of speech and freedom of soul.  It understands diversity.  It is invigorated by selfishness and unselfishness when arising in their proper areas.  It discovers and also creates the problems, and supplies  the answers.  It recognizes the tiniest, the unseen and the huge qualities.  It is opinionated, speculative and recalcitrant.  It is the wealth that is with us twenty four hours a day and that waits recognition.  It is the magic which inspires thought, and the all constructive force in creation.  Like awareness, it is without size and without age, the splendour which motivates life.

The intellect has a unique sweetness, that sleepless eyes and bent backs are well aware of.  It detects and pursues a fascinating path to fulfilment.  There is a satisfaction to be had from full effort that insufficient effort does not give - regardless of the nature of result.  Awareness is the common property of every person and serves to enrich the intellect.  It awakens imagination.

Tradition has taught the value of physical ownership, but there also is value in psychical ownership: in sailing the seas, in walking the fields, in admiring the undulating and the rigid, the light and the shadows, the sublime beauty of form and colour; in the message of sound.  Free things can be ours when we take the effort to respect our imagination, to understand that the joy it brings is real.  In the pursuit of physical ownership we are involved with others and are therefore more vulnerable.  True awareness gives us the opportunity to discover the psychical ownership which does not require cash.

Wealth and poverty also exist in the mind: they come as satisfaction and dissatisfaction.  Dissatisfaction about appearance, personal relationships, career and such remain dissatisfaction if effort is not made towards improvement.  The destructive element in the personality when allowed too long a stay, may become a habit which takes us over.  There is such a thing as the point of no return.  One is responsible for keeping watch over the destructive and constructive element in one's personality.  It takes self discipline to over-rule a destructive nature and to keep it where it belongs.

The outgoing and the withdrawn live dangerously.  The beautiful is made up of both limitation and splendour.  To believe in the principle of Creative Justice is to understand that because we have sorrow, there must be joy; because we have death, there must be life in the self-same areas.  On a scale of measurement, the physical is limited, the psychical is far reaching.  True awareness is not trained, but rather, it makes us see things as they are.  The awareness that is trained comes from loved ones and society, and as such, it is tinged with prejudice: we learn to see as others see.  We have ideas of the beautiful and the ugly, and we may insult the creative force every day of our lives.

How many ideas or concepts we use every day that we can claim to be our own? Some may not be conducive to our nature, yet we use them without question.  They block our thoughts to discovering the true awareness which unites us with all living things.  We receive attitude from culture more than we do from original awareness.  The child born follows the patterns of the adult, is praised or scolded according to the concepts of right and wrong coming from the adult, while his or her original awareness may remain dormant, aroused only when touched by conflict, danger or love.

The thinkers of this world are not an elite set because the use of original awareness makes every person a thinker in his or her category.  The use of original thought has not been encouraged by the social and economic forces throughout time.  However, it is in the nature of creative justice that it is fulfilling in any portion of use.  There are many forces engaged together which get us into trouble; but ours is the force needed to take us out.  Civilization and custom may make the enemy recognizable, but it takes raw awareness to know when to strike a blow in our defence.

The super-person is curious from birth to death, and interest reaches far beyond the frown of the next door neighbour.  Knowledge is finite and infinite, and in its unveiling, lies the strength of the mentality.  Satisfaction comes from what we know to be ours; dissatisfaction comes from what we know and what we do not know to be ours: the chances for improvement may lie in maintaining a state of moderation.

In the realm of awareness there is a life force everywhere - a life force existing in the unseen atoms, a force which controls preservation, and which destroys unneeded and unfeeling evil, and a force which is made of pure love.  This pure love is scattered in the universal spaces, this love whose immeasurable strength links the galaxies penetrating the galaxies themselves, and whose tiniest part can caress a rose with the help of a breeze.  Its quantities are powerful, its qualities are without change.  It shakes the waves to let the waters breathe and takes care of the invisible molecules to keep the earth alive.  It cannot be computed by the five senses or be analyzed by the finest instruments.  This power, the strongest of all powers has conferred upon the mere atom the freedom of will.

Can the atom control its free will?  The answer could be yes -to the point of appeasement.  The freedom of will which motivates natural causes resulting in say an earthquake must not be confused with the control of will with which man is empowered.  Volcanoes and earthquakes are the Earth's way of seeking a cure.

We the more complex beings show the presence of some Intelligence.  It has been here just like iron or oxygen in our bodies.  It must have evolved with us, and look what we can do? The man on the moon is no longer a fairy tale.  Like all living things we have freedom of will, but we also have control of will which makes us more responsible than any other living form.  Compare the forces in a single atom to the forces in the stars and galaxies.  Can we visualize the intelligence in existence, and its power to lift pebbles or move mountains with the freedom of its will, and possibly with minimal control of that will?

Suppose as a species we were forced to develop intelligence because of our organic bodies: how could we have begun, if the potential for doing so was not there?  Some power must have supplied us with it for our directions through thorns and thickets, through fields of perfumed flowers, in search of satisfaction and self: the raw being crying out in need and want and finding support, in order to become.  That raw being might very well be as old as eternity.  A brand new life comes from life itself - that life which is invincible.  Suppose things happen, beginning from the subject what, the place where, or the time when? But why is another matter! It seeks answers.  Why did the bushes turn to trees, and the dinosaurs bury themselves to become fuel? Why have things happened? It may be life in full expression pursuing the course of justice.

Two million wires, twirled and whirled to the satisfaction of the technologists, a lot of scientific knocking of heads together, or sometimes knocking one another, or becoming suffocated with having to use tons of paper and other equipment in the search for proof, reliability and final production, and presto, a computer is born - yes, born! It works to the limit of its potential.  How was human-kind designed?  Whatever was human, was able to receive intelligence - or development as we know it could not have taken place.

Intelligence cannot be pushed into an object, like stuffing a rag doll.  Rather, it must be accepted into the system, or else it will not take root.  Flesh, blood, muscles, bones, arteries, organs, are all our blessings free to submit to the results of our diets and general way of life.  Brain matter and nerves are the great network of communication in our bodies.  How do all these various masses work together satisfactorily or otherwise? Can the physical in bone and marrow think?

Human-kind alive is - alive, but how does one function? How does the life force operate? Variety and form of matter which includes less bulk and more water is of small consequence.  What counts is whatever lies at the back of all this action: the body - a country, bureaucracy, communication, givers, receivers, its goal, progress, preservation.

Can we imagine the great master Life, with its directors, its innovators and all its staff at work inside us? Can we imagine intelligence occupying desks in muscles and marrow, in tissues and blood, and communicating, or there could be no business done - no progression or regression?

But are the senders and the receivers both dwelling in common matter, independent of common matter? The idea that without the organic brain, all living senses die could be wrong.  Can thought die? It is said that when the brain is dead it is no longer able to send messages, that thoughts become extinct.  Let us examine these thoughts.  They are supposed to have no independent existence.  They cannot operate by themselves, then how do they receive? How does thought and matter communicate? It is possible that thought action or thought reaction is the motivator over flesh and blood, and is also independent of it; that thought uses matter to do its work, that food becomes flesh with the workings of thought, that thought is eternal, an awareness in all life forms, a common link, a oneness uncreated that carries on in change.

Why are we here and where are we going? Could it be that we were always here in myriad pieces, in DNA's, in quantum physics? Our ancestors may have the answer going back in time and timelessness.  In the organic world, the world of Nature uncreated, there is no death but change that brings new life.  From life to life existence carries on in disposal and renewal.  The source of life is timeless, as something cannot come from nothing.  Matter regenerates through change.  Psyche or spirit, ageless and changeless outliving suns and moons go on to energise the universe in splendour now and forever.  We go through the process of pain through change.  Out of the shadows we come into renewal uniquely again and again.

One does not choose to be born.  Choice comes after birth or being.  It is why Divine love shares a responsibility with all life forms in the keeping of fitness and joy.  It lies in Restoration.

Perfect love seeks justice, delivers compassion, caring, empathy, restoration in body and soul.  It is boundless and timeless and is in all of uncreated creation or life.  It can get defiled in living things.  It is influenced by greed through need and selfishness or self-centredness, through ignorance or that feeling of insufficiency.  These characteristics may go on to spread evil and discomfort in other life forms, all having divine qualities of their own and in danger of disease and defilement.  Herewith, the unending source of Perfect Love carries on, in a Divine relationship, giving and healing in conjunction with body and soul in all life forms.

Smash my body into invisible bits, I am as the scattered atoms in the elements, but those thoughts which make up my soul will come together: myself cannot be broken or divided.  What is Creation's game? Change is life and movement, but what of Creation's values? It gave us questions, so where are the answers? Surely the Thing which designed the Empire State building or the complex bridges, the machines and computers did not use brain tissue alone? What happens to the real engineer after death?

We may observe that real values never lose their essence despite a never ending universe where growth brings growth.  Such growth will continue to need intelligence, or with its loss, become lumps of matter without directions, feeling or need.  Creation will not lie down and die.  It is intelligence maintaining intelligence in every living thing according to its kind, existing in earth, sky and water, in vegetation, and to a greater consciousness in little forms of life and still more in fishes and animals: and in man in which it reaches its full awareness.

To find reality one must follow the true course of justice.  It is possible that the lowliest forms of life experience some kind of cognition and fulfilment, and that they are provided for their worth and worthiness by a supreme Intelligence, by a love which never changes in a world forever changing.  It prompts us to ask - what is my purpose? What is my reward? Will we disappear in separate abysses never to meet? Is oblivion our lot? Then Creation is without awareness.  And can a thing which is without awareness make sense? Yet sense is everywhere within its values.  Genuine values change suitably and conveniently if they must.  They do not disappear.  Fear becomes bold, hate becomes tolerance, love remains love.  In the timeless and boundless realm of awareness the common link, love is the strongest force and is our keeper.

Let us dare to say that the old virtues such as morality, honour, respect, and such; values grown reclusive or unattractive may have given way to self-centred, false pride and the me person or more likely the what's in it for me person.  A thin line lies between strength and weakness.  What are the forces responsible for this? Heredity, environment, the masses influenced by media and moguls, by capitalists, governing bodies and government; all societal decline stem from the power structures set by adults, by authority in the economic field where self-interest and self-dom in one's court will lead to the forces of greed and need in the socio-economic field of the masses.  The powers that are can lead to all round weakness and decadence.  Free will, choice and growth may be hard to come by, but effort pays back splendidly.  Natural Justice carries on.  Fulfilment comes and goes throughout eternity.  The unending game of unending life carries on in change, awareness carries on in change and is never exhaustive.  It abodes in all life forms, emanating according to desire or need.  It comes from Divine Love, a gift to be used with wisdom.  Nothing comes and nothing goes that was not always here.  That red-wood cedar may come to rot to feed the earth, but its essence carries on and on in fulfilment.
