Lake Shasta Caverns has a unique history. First known as CHALK CAVE, later known as BAIRD CAVE, in honor of professor Spencer F. Baird, the first U.S. Fish Commissioner appointed in 1872. Finally, as LAKE SHASTA CAVERNS.
These caves and the limestone beds of Shasta County were, in the years of 1903-1905, the object of much additional research to determine at what time man first appeared in this area. Extensive investigation was carried on by the department of Anthropology of the University of California, Chiefly in the Chalk (Lake Shasta Caverns) and Samwell Cave. |
