Located in the Santa Ana Mountains, Caņada de la Madera (Timber Canyon) now known as Silverado was a mining boomtown founded in 1878 when silver was discovered in the nearby Blue Light Mine. During the colorful life of its boom, 1878-1881, miners flocking to the area established a thriving community, served daily by stage coach from Los Angeles and Santa Ana. My heart goes out to the family of Nicholas and Glenn Anderson whose bodies were recovered from the Blue Light Mine today (6/24/2002). They died yesterday while exploring the mine. We all know that exploring old mines is dangerous. It is very important that we educate ourselves to the dangers and how to minimize them. |
