Onyx Mine / Pipes Road |
Pipes Road is a black diamond trail (most difficult) in the San Bernardino Mountains east of Big Bear. After a few hours of travaling eastbound and once you get to the bottom of the canyon you will find some old miners cabins. Following a trail on foot from the cabins up the other side of the canyon you will find remnants of the Onyx Mine. |
Carl Nygaard filed the first clam for the Onyx Mine in 1922. John Olson and four partners acquired the Onyx Mine in 1923 and for five years quarried the onyx and carted it out to Morongo Valley. In 1928 Olson was murdered at his mine by a deserter whom he had befriended. The venture was soon abandoned because the price of onyx was not sufficient to cover operating costs. James Malinowski took over the claim in the 1930’s and renamed it the “Lucky Onyx Mine”. He worked it for a short time with marginal success. |
