Step by step plans to build your sprint car

Important bookmark this page, in the case you loose your plans

1- Making the mold: Take a  block of wax and carve it into a rectangular shape
2 1/2"x5/8"x7/16".This is the outside dimensions of the body. Then carve it into the shape of  a sprint body. Dia.# 8 shows the dimensions. It is best to mark the dimensions out on the wax before carving it. Dia.# 5 shows the shape of the fuel cell. After getting the desired shape, you will need
to take some molding clay and form it into a rectangular shape large enough for body. Before clay
sets coat body with petroleum jelly, and press it top side down into the mold. As mold is curing
start carving the excess clay from the bottom side of body, Dia.# 7 shows how mold should look.
After mold cures, place it in a microwave for a few seconds. This will soften wax a little making
it easy to release from mold. In Dia.# 7 you will see a hole in the bottom  of the mold., a nail can
be used here for a push pin to release your bodies.

2- Making the body: The body is made out of epoxy putty. I use devcon white epoxy found at walmart. Work up an ample amount of putty following instructions on package. before pressing putty
into mold, place push pin in and lightly coat mold cavity with petroleum jelly. Push putty into
mold making sure to work it down in good. As body dries, use an exacto knife to trim away the
excess putty on the bottom of the body. After it dries remove from mold. Using a dremmel tool
and file, shape the bottom side of the body to the dimensions in Dia.# 8. Use sand paper on the top
of the body to smooth it out, car putty can be used to fill in any inperfections. Sand smooth and
primer, two coats. Sand last coat smooth. On the bottom you will have to dremmel out two
places, one for the axle gear and one for the front of the motor, See Dia.# 2  ill.# 1&2

3- Building the roll cage: Dia.# 3 shows the location where six holes need to be drilled in body.
Use a pencil to mark the location of holes. 4 are in the cockpit and 2 are located on the hood in front
of cockpit. Refer to Dia.# 5 to get an idea were holes should be placed. Don't worry if you mess
up you are working with putty, you can always fill in your mistakes. Drill holes as deep as possible
without drilling through body. Use .030" mig wire to build cage. you will need to cut two small pieces of wire and using needle nose pliers bend two 90 degree bends in them. Use the holes to get dimensions. Dia.# 3  ill.# 1 shows one in place do the same for ill.# 2. I make the one in the back wider than the one in front. The highth on these two bars will determine the pitch of your wing, lay a flat piece of metal across the front and back bars to find the desired pitch of wing. cut mig wire accordingly. To make side bars you will need to use your fingers. Dia.# 3 ill.# 3 shows the shape they need to be. It needs to fit into hole on the hood run across the top of the two bars in the cockpit then down the back of the cockpit along side of the fuel cell. Refer to Dia.# 5  ill.# 1, you will notice it finishes up at the bottom of the body. After getting the cage shaped right glue it into place, using super glue in the holes, at the top were bars meet and along the back by fuel cell. Putty in the holes, then sand smooth. Now your ready to paint. Give it two coats of paint and one coat of clear coat.

4- Building wing & spoiler: Use aluminum about the same thickness of a pop can. Cut one piece
square 1 1/4"x 1 1/4". Mark out 1/8" on two opposite sides, then bend these 90 degrees. These
are the edges you will use to connect the sides of the wing, refer to Dia.# 4  ill.# 1. Now cut two
pieces 1 1/4"x 14/16" . Attach these using thin two sided tape, one side needs to be offset
towards the top and the other needs to be centered, see Dia.# 4. To make spoiler cut one piece
1/2"x 5/8", then on the 5/8" side measure out 1/16" on two opposite sides, then bend them up
90 degrees. Your finished size will be 1/2"x 1/2". Refer to spoiler in Dia.# 1  ill.# 1. To attach
the wing and spoiler to your body use two sided tape.

5- Fitting body to Tyco HP7 chassis: In order to fit body to chassis you will need to cut the two metal contacts flush with top of the motor. These are located in front of the motor. Refer to Dia.# 6 ill.# 2. After cutting bend them towards the front of the chassis. This will create
spring tension to help hold body on. On the back of the chassis, Dia.# 6 ill.# 1, you will need
to wrap cloth type electrical tape around chassis and super glue it into place. This is used to
help hold body on. To place body on chassis, put front down first pull back against metal
contacts by motor then press down over the back of chassis were you placed the tape.
Now you are ready to race!

This project will take a lot of time and patience. It may take you quite a few tries
to get it right, you may even have a few methods of your own to make it easier.
If you love slot cars like I do, it will be worth it. You will be building something that
will be a lot of fun to race and fix up, as in paint color, decals, screen in windshield
area, driver...etc..........
