AMES, Iowa -- Ames is taking a stand against the Patriot Act.
  SURVEY
The Ames City Council approved a resolution that opposes portions of the Patriot Act.

Tuesday, the City Council approved a resolution opposing parts of the act, which was approved by Congress after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

One councilman, Riad Mahayni, said it's a vote about civil liberties.

Critics say the law infringes upon civil liberties by giving government too much power and the ability to conduct secret investigations.

Ames' resolution is mostly general, with such statements affirming "strong support for all constitutional rights."

The resolution passed by a 5-1 vote.

Ames is believed to be the first Iowa city to pass an anti-Patriot Act resolution. At least 272 other U.S. cities have taken similar actions.
