| What the Terri Schiavo case means for America and the World by Eric D. Williams Terri Schindler-Schiavo is paralyzed. She is in need of the care of special staff to monitor and care for her. Because she is paralyzed, she can not feed herself, and receives nourishment and hydration through a feeding tube. After a long struggle through the court system a judge has ordered the tube be removed on March 18, 2005. On February 25, 2005, Circuit Judge George W. Greer in the Probate Division of the Circuit Court for Pinellas County, stated to Terri’s husband, Michael Schiavo that the tube be removed. The wrongful withholding of nourishment from Terri Schiavo is a felony! It is illegal to cause the wrongful death of an innocent person. This act will become a homicide if carried through to completion. Terri Schiavo, 41, has not committed any crime. She is not in a comma. With the exception of the feeding tube, Terri is on no other form of life support-system. She opens and moves her eyes. She laughs and she cries. She recognizes and reacts to people and other stimuli. She can form the words “mom” and “help me”. She is simply a paralyzed woman. Schindler-Schiavo has been hospitalized for 15 years when her heart stopped beating temporarily and oxygen was cut off to her brain. Michael Schiavo has said his wife would not want to be kept alive with no hope for recovery. Her parents, Robert and Mary Schindler dispute that she has no mental cognition and say their daughter responds to them. They are also prepared to assume responsibility for the continued care of Terri. The American people, the U.S. Congress, Florida Legislature, Governor Jeb Bush, Florida Department of Children and Families, the Vatican, numerous public interest groups, and luminary Americans are making public their adamant interest sustaining Terri's life. As an American, Terri Schindler-Schiavo is protected under both U.S. Constitutional Laws and Florida Statutes. The 8th Amendment forbids cruel and unusual punishment. Timothy McVeigh and other heinous criminals are not starved to death! The 14th Amendment protects her human rights as an American. The U.S. Constitution and the Florida Statue have been over-ridden by Judge George Greer. If Michael Schiavo tried to starve his dog to death, he would be arrested and thrown in jail. However, the same court system that protects animals from cruelty, has grant Michael the power to cruelly starve his own wife to death. If we allow Terri Schidler-Schiavo to be killed, the U.S. Constitution will continue to be shredded. If they take one, the will take another. What will happen to Terri could happen to you! If you do not stand up and protect those who have the same liberties and rights as you, who will stand up for you when you are in need? First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out-- because I was not a communist; Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out-- because I was not a socialist; Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out-- because I was not a trade unionist; Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-- because I was not a Jew; Then they came for me-- and there was no one left to speak out for me. |
