Girl Group Chronicles: The Swans

This group’s little flirtation with the charts came with an ode to a sound which would ironically help to bring an end to the girl group sound.

The Swans’ story begins in 1963 with the Cameo-Parkway label issuing a single entitled "Daydreaming Of You." The song didn’t get much play, but its follow-up, a Jerry Ross produced double-sided slice of pleasure, "You Better Be A Good Girl Now b/w He’s Mine" made some waves on the airwaves. The top side was the story about a girl who had fooled around on her man and now she had to wise up becuase he was coming back, while the flip was an almost identical version of Alice Wonderland’s hit from ealry in the year, and sounded like something the Chiffons might have recorded.

"The Boy With The Beatle Hair" was next up in early 1964. The song talked about a gal’s infatuation with a "boy over there with the beatle hair." It captured the madness of the moment and soon topped off at number 85. The group then faded into obscurity, but not before recording quite a stock of material as back-up for fellow Ross girl group the Sapphires.
