| OK, I'll tell you right from the start, I'm not a big fan of Ron Howard. Yea yea yea, he's a nice guy and we loved him as Opie and Richie Cunningham blah blah blah. I just think his movies are kind of boring. Good, but ultimately boring. Except Apollo 13, which I can (and do) watch over and over and over. We put this in the VCR (Yes, we still have a VCR. No, we do not have a DVD) while Feenie was sleeping and K1&2 were downstairs watching the remake of Bye Bye Birdie. George from Seinfeld is in that as well as Tyne Daley, the woman who was in one of those insipid cop shows in the '70's was also. I kind of think the shouting gas bags are the new cop shows of the new century. (Hannity & Colmes vs. Starsky & Hutch.) And of course they are worth about the same to our edification, but don't have syndication value. Maybe it is conincidence, but whenever a movie is on that I don't have a lot of interest in, I have to do some work. So I brought my laptop over to the couch and did some work on P/Es. Have I mentioned my laptop is equipped with an 802.11 wireless card that allows me to access my high-speed cable modem service from almost anywhere in the house. The whole setup cost about $250. Not only does it allow me to move the laptop around, but it allows multiple machines to access the cable modem simultaneously. Now the fine folks at Optimum Online will allow you to do the latter by purchasing ANOTHER cable modem at $40/month. Did I mention that fine folks at Optimum Online recently raised prices on their high-speed cable modem service? They claim their costs have gone up!!! Excuse Me.?? Their costs have gone DOWN. The biggest cost is telecommunications services and anyone who has read the papers recently knows telecomm costs have declined. Can I sue the cable company for lying? Or sue them for insulting me? I did write my congressman and two senators to complain. It's very easy. Go to www.house.gov and www.senate.gov to find you reps and senators. Mine write me back. It's kind of fun. My faith in government increases as my faith in corporations declines. But back to a Beautiful Mind. It did win best picture last year, and Ron Howard won Best Director. Little Ronnie Howard also produced the movie so he got two Academy Awards. Here's a synopsis of the story. A brilliant mathematician comes down with a bad case of schizophrenia but through the love of a good woman and his indomitable spirit he ends up beating the odds and lives happily ever after. Wait a minute. That's kind of like Splash! A very nice guy develops a bad case of hydrophobia and through the love of a good mermaid and his indomitable spirit he beats the odds and ends up living happily ever after. Wait a minute. That's kind of like Apollo 13. A talented air force pilot develops a bad case of broken space ship and through the love of a good woman and his indomitable spirit he beats the odds and ends up living happily ever after. Wait a minute...Well, you get the idea. Like I said, his movies are kind of boring. Russell Crowe is in this movie. I don't know where Crowe was born, but I don't think it was in the US of A and he mumbles. He was in that movie Gladiator, which won Best Picture, and RC won Best Actor. Crowe was also in a little movie called, "Mystery, Alaska," about a town in Alaska that plays the New York Rangers in an exhibition hockey game. Burt Reynolds, of all people, is in the movie, as well as very small parts for Little Richard and a hilarious performance by Mike Myers as a ex-hockey player, now broadcast color commentator. |
