Jul-14-02 Sagamore Hill National Historic Site-Oyster Bay, NY
Theodore Roosevelt's home on Long Island.  A beautiful location and a lovely home.  But TR scares me.  Too unrestrained, both personally and politically.  The genius of the American Constitution is the ability for someone like TR to push the limits of power, but get pushed back by the other branches.

A grand time.  Beautiful day, although hot and muggy.  We returned home via the Throgs Neck Bridge since Mom wanted the experience of driving over that bridge.  I should get an extra piece of the estate for my devotion.
Jul-13-02 Eleanor Roosevelt NHS-Hyde Park, NY
We visited here right after FDR.  The house used to be a factory for furniture makers, as an idea germinated by Eleanor for Depression-era work.  The tour guide asked us to restrain Feenie, even though she was behaving appropriately.  We all took umbrage.

Mom and The Donald accompanied us on this visit to FDR.  We stopped at the Daily Planet Diner for lunch, before getting to FDR.  It was the same place we had stopped on our earlier visit to FDR.

The tour guide was young and verbose.  Feenie was old enough to walk, but she doesn't walk, she runs.
Sep-29-01 Adams Nat'l Historical Park
We had planned to visit Boston with Mom and The Donald but the Sept-11 attack changed plans.  We took the kids anyway.  We visited three sites.  One is the birthplace of John Adams, the second-right next door-the birthplace of JQ Adams, and the last is the larger home built after Adams achieved wealth.

The guy was a pain in the ass, no way around that.  I think PITA is a requirement for the Presidency.

This visit also took place shortly after McCullough's (rather dull) bio of John the Father, so there were a fair amount of tourists.  Someone from Oklahoma (I know this becuase he told the park ranger) complained about having to sign up for a tour.  After all, at the Lincoln home he could just walk in and walk around.
Jun-27-01 Bandelier National Monument-Los Alamos, NM
This visit was part of a vacation that started in Denver.  We drove to the Great Sand Dunes National Monument & Preserve and the kids had a blast.  A pretty amazing site, sand dunes right in the middle of the mountains.  (NB.  The Great Sand Dunes have NOT been counted in the official tally since we DID NOT get a stamp).

In Alamosa, CO I was unable to get a signal on my Sprint PCS service, odd, since Sprint had announced about a month earlier availability of service in Alamosa via its affiliate, Alamosa PCS.  Further, when driving into Sante Fe, I was unable to get a signal at all.  This is when I found the downside of the Sprint nationwide service.  They did not have a roaming agreement in Sante Fe, so I could not get service without paying an arm and a leg.  I switched to AT&T after this vacation.

The kids, the Mrs. and I had a great time at Bandelier.  It was a beautiful day.  We hiked for about three miles through the cliff dwellings.  Feenie was in a pack, on my back.  I got quite a work out.

Apr-03-01 Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt NHS-Hyde Park, NY
The Mrs. and I love visiting historic sites.  The kids love the gift shops.  I came away with the feeling FDR was a Momma's boy.  The house was owned by his Mother and dominated the household until her death, even when FDR was President.  Of course, this didn't sit well with Eleanor.  What struck me most was the pictures of sail boats throughout the house.  FDR was an avid sailor and I can hardly imagine the transition he had to make after losing his ability to walk.  I came away with a deep respect for the man.
