Calories Needed = 1.1 x (BMR + PA) |

There are multiple formulas for BMR. The one I use is the Harris-Benedict Formula for no other reason than it was the most complicated. In my mind, that makes it more accurate. (This assumption should be the subject of a completely different article). The link on the prior page shows the Harris-Benedict formula for BMR, but uses that nasty metric system. The following formulas have been converted to English measurements. For Adult Males BMR = 88.362 + (12.189 x H) + (6.077 x W) - (5.677 x A) For Adult Females BMR = 447.593 + (7.869 x H) + (4.194 x W) - (4.330 x A) where H = height in inches W = weight in pounds A = age in years. Let's play with this a little. The average height of a US male is 69 inches. The recommended weight for the average US male, from the web site we've been working with, is 149 pounds. The chart below shows the caloric requirements for the average US male, assuming he wanted to maintain his recommended 149 pounds, and assuming the PA component was zero. That is, the caloric requirement of a couch potato. (or is that potatoe? help me Dan Quayle. or is that Quaille?) |

Tha decline works out to be 6 calories per year. To put this in perspective, a 12 oz. beer is about 150 calories. A lite beer about 100 calories. A piece of bread about 100 calories. So over a 35 year time frame, the average male, in order to maintain his ideal weight, needs to cut 219 calories out of his diet. Two lite beers per day, or a couple of pieces of bread per day. The obvious question is: At what age is the caloric requirement zero? The answer is somewhere around 307. My suspicion is, however, that you'd have a hard time of it past 150, when the caloric requirement is about 1,000 calories per day. On 1,000 calories, you get hungry. |
