How does all this compare to the rule of thumb of Michael Jordan's trainer?  He said to determine your daily caloric needs, take your weight (149 goal for average US male) and multiply by 13 for sedentary person.  This equals 1,937 calories. For a moderately active person he said multiply your weight by 15.  This equals 2,235 calories.

Now we don't know what age he had in mind, but he is coming up with requirements about 250 calories higher than we estimated.

The answer, I believe, lies in the energy expenditure of writing/deskwork.  If we assume the average US male sits at a desk for 8 hours per day, he would burn about 322 calories.  So let's throw in 300 calories burned just walking around during the day, picking up pencils, working on the web site and so on.
From our formula: Calories = 1.1 x (BMR + PA), for an average 40-year old US male, we get 1,671 calories.  Add in 300 calories for office/deskwork.  Add in 243 calories if he walks 60 minutes per day.  A grand total of 1,971 for the couch potato and 2,214 for a moderately active person.  Michael Jordan's trainer knows his stuff!
