Fun with DB2 Performance for Everyone
Back to List

Seminar Abstract

Companies have been running DB2 for over 15 years now. Through all that time, all customers have had one thing in common: "How do you make DB2 run faster?" In the beginning, tuning DB2 was left to the system programmers. Then it spread to the DBA's. Now, to successfully get DB2 to perform the way you want, everyone must be involved, from management to DBA to application programmer. This seminar discusses some of the fundamentals of DB2 Performance tuning. However, the approach is a little different. Although the best DBA will gain new skill form this seminar, so will the newest DB2 application programmer. The seminar will cover the performance changes from DB2 Version 3 through DB2 Version 6. It will cover everything from buffer pools and EDM pools to locking, bind parameters to logging, commit processing to SQL. EXPLAIN will also be covered in detail, with a look at some of the performance improvements and tools that will be made available to us in DB2 UDB for OS/390 Version 6.

    Goals for the Seminar

  1. Describe how the SQL usability improvements and utility enhancements have affected performance
  2. Improve the skills necessary to plan for DB2 Version 5
  3. Increase the confidence level needed to make a Version 5 installation or migration decision
  4. Enhance the understanding of DB2 direction as a data server
  5. Preview of DB2 UDB for Os/390 Version 6

DB2 for OS/390 Version 5 Seminar
Back to List

Seminar Abstract

We are finally understanding the significance of DB2 Version 4.1 and its effect on our shops. Migrations to V4.1 are complete, or at least planned and underway. So, is it time to sit back and catch our breath? I think not. IBM has a new release of DB2, DB2 for OS/390 Version 5, just around the corner and this seminar is going to tell you all about it. This new release is bigger and better and full of more interesting things to make our lives better. DRDA has been enhanced (again) positioning DB2 to be "The Data Server" in the industry with native TCP/IP, CLI/ODBC support, and improved stored procedures. There are major performance improvements like Sysplex Query Parallelism. Usability has been addressed with SQL enhancements, utility changes, Visual EXPLAIN, and large table spaces - up to 1 terabyte. And these are just a few of the enhancements. There is a little something for everybody in Version 5. Whether you are an application programmer, DBA, or systems programmer, this seminar has something for you. It will give you your first glimpse of some of the more significant improvements and the information you need to make your Version 5 decision.

DB2 Recovery from Z to A Seminar
Back to List

Seminar Abstract

Today, your data is your business. Too frequently though, backup and recovery become an area that is overlooked, not emphasized, or simply misunderstood. Very often, recoveries just aren't performed enough to maintain the skills needed to run them properly. In fact, continuing change and maturing of DB2 make it difficult to keep up with the latest and greatest backup and recovery features. What you need to do is just stop, step back for a minute, get back to the basics, and examine recovery from archives to ZPARMs. For example, have you ever wondered… What do I need to know about image copies? Full, Incremental, SHRLEVEL Change, SHRLEVEL Reference, and frequency? Mergecopy and Modify? What's in the log? How do I manage the size and placement of active and archive logs? What's in SYSCOPY and SYSLGRNG and why should I care? How can I improve the performance of the recovery process? What's new in hardware that could help me or hurt me? And what about all those non-standard backup methods. There is even a little on disaster recovery techniques. The answers to all of these questions are here. This seminar will benefit the novice as well as the experienced DB2 professional.

This seminar covers DB2 Version 4, 5, and 6. Primary focus is at the Version 5 level.

DB2 Recovery Log - Facts and Fantasies
    Back to List

    Seminar Abstract

The DB2 log has fascinated the DB2 professional because so little is published about it. This seminar will separate the facts from the fantasies that have surrounded the log over the years. Log placement, how and when data is logged, what is actually contained in a log record, SYSLGRNX, SYSCOPY, the log utilities, and changes in the log process that have taken place over the last few releases are just some of the issues that will be addressed. Armed with this information, you will be able to solve recovery problems that may have seemed un-solvable before and improve the performance of the DB2 Recovery utilities.

The seminar begins with an overview of the log function and physical format of the log records. From here, the student is guided through the solution of a number of problem scenarios using only the information from the log to solve the problem. There will also be discussions on how to develop some home grown tools based on the DB2 off-line utilities to aid in some of the problem solving. Of course, there will be ample time for students to ask questions and discuss any aspect of the DB2 log that has always interested them.

This seminar is updated to DB2 Version 5.

      Goals for the Seminar

    1. Describe in detail how logging is performed and what is logged
    2. Improve DB2's recovery performance by making better use of the log
    3. How to use the DB2 log as an additional tool for problem solving

      Seminar Outline

    1. Recover Log Overview
    2. Log Record Formats
    3. Log Placement
    4. How Data is Logged
    5. What is Actually Contained in a Log Record
    6. What Affects the Log Process
    7. Log Utilities
    8. Open Discussion
