John William Grout, an 18 year old Worcester, Massachusetts resident enlisted on July 12,1861. As a 2nd Lieutenant of Company D of the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry was killed on October 21,1861 at the Battle of Balls Bluff in Leesburg, Virginia. He was the first Worcester Soldier to die in the Civil War.
