The Willmar boys came into this meet a little shorthanded and like champions the rest stepped up to the plate. Running without MN#2 Mahad Hassan and the usual #4 runner Zac Coquyt, the Cardinals still ran tough in a 25 team meet to place 4th. The Cardinals were led by second place finisher Andrew Nicklawsky.  Nicklwasky was up in the lead pack or leading for most of the race until about 600 meters to go where MN#10 Danny Docherty took over the lead and Nicklawsky was unable to catch him.  In only his second varsity race, Mohammed Hussein stepped up big and placed 10th overall and Abshir Ahmed had a big day as well placing 24th.  David Anderson and Ryan Larsen finished out the top five for Willmar in 47th and 87th respectively for the 4th place Cardinals. In the team race, MN#9 Eastview won the meet pretty easily with a score of 120 to MN#12 St.Michael-Albertville with a score of 145.
Willmar's next meet is next Saturday the 29th as they host their home invitational. It is only a 4 team invitational with Moorhead, Dassel-Cokato and Fargo North.

Coming off a successful meet in Hutchinson the Willmar girls were looking to prove that meet wasn't a fluke and to also redeem themselves from a bad Apple Valley meet last year.  The Cardinals ran very well against some of the top teams in the state with MN#2 Eden Prairie and MN#3 Burnsville.  The girls finished in 10th place showing a solid top 4 runners.  They were led by Jackie Johnson, Jayne Cole and Emily Ellingson in 43rd, 45th and 46th respectively. Danielle Erickson came in 62nd and rounding out the top five for Willmar was Erin Sheehan in 104th.  The girls are without their two senior leaders in Britta Pederson (out for the year) and Vanessa Engelmann who is sick.
In very aggressive moves, both Jackie Johnson and Jayne Cole started out with the race leader Cassy Opitz (MN#6) for the first 1200 meters, but then slowly faded back.  It was impressive to see the guts shown by those two runners to try and run with the top girls.
Willmar's next meet is next Saturday the 29th as they host their home invitational. It is only a 4 team invitational with Moorhead, Dassel-Cokato and Fargo.
