| The Willmar boys made history at the CLC meet in Sauk Rapids. They were the first team ever to score a perfect 15 as a team. In their final CLC race for the seniors, they set out on a mission to score perfectly and put all 8 runners in the top 10. Mission completed! Paced by Abdi Awale in 16:06 and Kaafi Adeys in 16:09, the Cardinals of Willmar destroyed the Cardinals of Alexandria 15-66. Mustafa Yusuf finished in 3rd in 16:22, Mahad Hassan in 16:30 and Mohammed Bedel in 16:38. Also earning All-conference for the boys was Andrew Nicklawsky in 17:17, Scott Boros in 17:20 and Zac Coquyt in 17:22. This was the first time that a team had every member earn All-Conference as well. Note: Justin Tyner of Brainerd did not run due to having a conference in Washington D.C. Normally he is in the mix with Abdi, Kaafi and Mufu. |
A very young and anxious team are these young ladies from Willmar. When people think of Willmar, they think of the boys team who are one of the best teams in the nation. Not to be overlooked are the girls of Willmar though. Having missed 2 of their top runners from last year's squad, the girls weren't expected to be near the top of the conference. Little did we know, the girls would take second at CLC's this year! With the return of Jayne Cole to the varsity line-up the girls had an awesome meet placing all 7 girls under 17 minutes. Earlier in the year, they were lucky to have 2 girls under 17 minutes. The lady cards were paced by freshman Jackie Johnson in a personal best time of 16:09, for 8th place and freshman Jayne Cole in 16:16 for 11th place. Following up and earning All-conference honorable mention was freshman Danielle Erickson (16:32, 17th), senior Brin Hanson (16:36, 20th) and sophomore Vanessa Engelman (16:45, 25th). Also placing for the cards was freshman Emily Ellingson (16:46, 26th), freshman Erin Sheehan (16:54, 30th) and freshman Carlie Freese (16:57, 32nd). The improvement from last year to this year was significant. In last year's meet Danielle Erickson finished 25th and was the girls 2nd runner. Compared to this year we had 5 girls in the top 25! One more note to finish on, the Willmar girls haven't had 7 girls finish under 17:00 since the section meet in 2002 when they placed second to advance to state meet. | |||||||||||||
