| The Willmar boys entered this race with high expectations for themselves and from everyone else in the nation. The first big meet of the season for the boys resulted in a "W" for the Cards, but yet everyone seems dissapointed in the race. Not knowing the results right after the race, the team thought they might not have even made the top 3 teams with the poor performances by the team. The team was led by Abdi Awale in 12th place and Kaafi Addeys in 20th. The next three for Willmar were Mohammed Bedel (31), Mahad Hassan (47) and Scott Boros (99). Normally the #3 runner, Mustafa Yusuf finished (133). The race had a great start, but had to be called back to the line because a number of runners fell in the first 100 meters. The boys got off to a great start, but wore down in the last mile and faltered. Most importantly, was the "W" the boys came away with despite the horrendous race the team had. Scott Boros should get the MVP for this race, by saving the team and coming through big as the #5 man. Results here. |
On a soggy day, the Willmar Cardinals came into a talented and very deep meet. The Varsity girls had a heartbreaker right before the race when they found out their #1 runner, Jackie Johnson, wouldn't be running due to being sick. The 16th-placed girls were then led by Erin Sheehan, who placed 60th overall in a time of 17:04, followed by Carlie Freese, Vanessa Engelmann, and Emily Ellingons in 82nd, 83rd and 84th respectively. Brin Hanson (106) and Britta Pederson (113) finished out the lineup for the shorthanded lady cards. The JV girls were led by Danielle Erickson who placed 3rd overall in a time of 17:13. In the varsity boys race where Willmar's team was compromised of the team's 9th-15th runners, the young kids most importantly gained valuable experience for their future. The boys placed 17th and were led by David Anderson in 55th place in a time of 18:13. His time here would have placed him 3rd overall in the JV race. Phil Cleary came in next at 92nd and the next 3 runners for the cards were Ryan Larsen (106), Phil Knutson (107) and Matt Weitzel (110). Next up for the Willmar Cardinals is the Willmar Invitational on Saturday September 30th at Eagle Creek Golf Course. Come cheer on your Willmar Cards!
