On a hot, humid and windy day, the Willmar boys took to the course with a new team and new look literally, as the team wore new jerseys for the first time. Not losing stride from last year, after losing 4 top seniors, the boys took home first place as a team and on the individual side too. The Cardinals were led by junior Mahad Hassan in a time of 16:23.2 which bettered last years first place time of 16:53 by Kevin Lachowitzer of Perham. Lachowitzer placed 2nd this year with a time of 16:39.5. Lachowitzer is one of the preseason favorites to win the class A state title for individuals. Coming in third was Andrew Nicklawsky for Willmar with a time of 16:57.9. Fourth place went to Tyler Iverson of Moorhead with a time of 17:03.6. The Moorhead Spuds finished in second place to Willmar by an overall score of 42-47.
Rounding out Willmar's top five was David Anderson, Abshir Ahmed and Zac Coquyt.
Note: Willmar's #3 runner, Mohammed Hussein did not run today.

On the girls side, the Willmar girls opened up their season with a 4th place finish. Placing in front of them was a deep Moorhead team, along with class A powers Staples-Motley and Perham. Willmar was led by senior Vanessa Engelmann who placed 12th overall in a time of 16:52 The overall winner was class A #2, Naomi Landecker of Staples-Motley in a time of 15:23. Willmars top 5 was rounded out by Jackie Johnson, Jayne Cole, Danielle Erickson and Britta Pederson.
Willmar's next meet is scheduled for Saturday, September 8th in Sioux Falls.
