Willmar Invitational Results
On a very windy day, Willmar went to battle with 3 other teams of Moorhead, Fargo North and Dassel-Cokato.  With winds around 20+mph and gusting over 30mph, the willmar meet turned into a tactical battle between runners.  On the boys side, there was a pack of 6 runners together through 2.25 miles before it dropped to 5 and then the last 600 yards it turned into who had the most gutsy kick.  Andrew Nicklawsky of Willmar took home the victory in a very good time of 16:56 followed by Moorhead's senior leader of Tyler Iverson in 16:58.  A few meters back was freshman Lucas Gemar of Moorhead in a time of 17:08. Coming in fourth was Willmar's Mohammed Hussein in 17:12 and rounding out the top 5 was Mach Akon from Fargo North in 17:18. (Last weekend at Apple Valley, Akon beat Hussein by 16 seconds). Willmar was then rounded out by Abshir Ahmed, David Anderson and Zac Coquyt in 7th,8th, and 11th respectively.  Willmar came in ranked 9th and Moorhead was ranked 10th.  (Note: Willmar ran without their #1 runner Mahad Hassan.)
On the girls side, it was a dominant performance put in by the Moorhead girls who took 5 of the top 6 spots for a great team score of 19.  Moorhead was led by Kaylee Litch in a time of 16:45.  Leading Willmar and breaking up Moorheads perfect score was Jackie Johnson in 5th place. Jayne Cole and Jackie were running with the top 4 Moorhead girls until the last half mile where they fell a little back. Jayne Cole finished in 6th place along with Emily Ellingson in 7th place.  Rounding out the top five was Erin Sheehan in 11th and Danielle Erickson in 12th. The Moorhead Spuds have been in the top 12 for most of the year as a team.
The Willmar Cardinals are next at Alexandria for the Meet of Champions on Saturday October 6th.
On the boys side, MN#2 Brainerd, #4 Stillwater, #7 Willmar, #8 Moorhead and #12 Roseville are there.  On the girls side MN#6 Prior Lake, #8 Brainerd, #11 Roseville are there for teams.
