On a cool but windy day, the Willmar Cardinals blew past their fellow section 2AA competitors. With a score of 47, the young unproven Cardinals won the meet followed in second and third by section competitors Hutchinson at 98 points and Buffalo at 102 points. Coming off the Augustana course, the Hutchinson course seems almost downhill the whole way as there are only a few hills to battle. This was evident as Mahad Hassan flew to a great time of 15:58, compared to last years winning time of 16:41. Andrew Nicklawsky also came in with a strong time of 16:23. Nicklawsky broke away from Kyle Schmidt at the 2 mile mark and never looked back. Finishing out Willmar's lineup was newcomer Mohammed Hussein, running his first varsity race due to injury, David Anderson and Zac Coquyt finishing in 13th, 14th and 17th. Willmar next competes at Apple Valley on the 22nd where rumors are they will face MN#1/HL#1 Rosemount who has a strong 1-2 punch in MN#2 Jordan Carlson and MN#4 Obai Hussein. Other strong teams are MN#9 Eastview, MN#12 Lakeville South and an always strong team of Eden Prairie. Results (Top Five): 1.) Mahad Hassan, 15:58 Willmar 2.) Andrew Nicklawsky, 16:23 Willmar 3.) Zac Mellon, 16:43 Buffalo 4.) Ben Rodriguez, 16:43 Buffalo 5.) Kyle Schmidt, 16:45 Hutchinson Willmar: 1.) Mahad Hassan 15:58 Willmar 2.) Andrew Nicklawsky 16:23 Willmar 13.) The Willmar Cardinal girls were going to find out where they stood in the section 2AA and after the Hutchinson meet, that is now a bigger mystery than before. Eight teams from section 2AA were with 34 points of each other. Hutchinson, Shakopee, New Prague, Marshall, Fairmont, Mankato East, Willmar and Buffalo all put on a show today. Some teams were led by some front runners, others relied on their depth. These 8 teams will be competing in mid October for 2 spots to state along with a very strong squad of Chaska. The Willmar girls put up some of the best times of their careers at the Hutchinson meet today. The Cardinals were led by Jackie Johnson finishing in 8th with a time of 15:41. Danielle Erickson, Jayne Cole, Vanessa Engelmann and Ashley Wigton rounded out Willmars top 5. Willmar is next at Apple Valley where MN#4 Eden Prairie, Apple Valley and fellow section 2AA schools of Shakopee and New Prague are all competing along with traditional powerhouses Fargo North and South.
