A very humid day it was at Hutchinson but the runners still ran anyway. Two of the states top two runners in #11 Mahad Hassan and #12 Zac Mellon of Buffalo took over the lead at the mile mark and never let up as they battled back and forth as the 800m state champion from track, Mellon, took Hassan in the last 200 meters for the victory in a time of 16:08. Hassan finished in 16:13. On the team side, the Willmar boys used a strong 1-2 punch and a pack of 4 runners to come away with the victory over Sartell by 8 points. Willmar's 6th runner was in front of everyone's 5th runner. Sadam Abdi came in fourth overall and then Willmar's next 4 runners came in together within 16 seconds of each other. Like last year, the Hutchinson meet is a section 2AA meet preview with almost every team in the section competing here. From the gun Maria Haugger of Shakopee took the lead over Laura Hughes of Mankato West and those two battled for about 3000 meters before Hughes took a wrong turn and got off course, eventually being disqualified. Haugger ran to the finish line in a great time of 14:50. Jayne Cole, ran with the pack of Hannah Kellerman, Heidi Peterson (both Sartell) and Jackie Thaeneart (Buffalo) until the last 800 meters where Cole faded back to 9th place and put up a personal best time of 15:29. The next pack of Willmar girls came in at 32nd, 34th, 40th by the junior class of Jackie Johnson, Emily Ellingson and Erin Sheehan. Those 3 were separated by 4 seconds. Cassandra Johnson rounded out the top5 in 58th place. The girls finished in 7th place with 174 points. Next up for the Cardinals is Apple Valley on September 20th. Results (Top Five): 1.)
