| 2006 Minnesota State High School Cross Country Meet | ||||||
| In what was considered to be one of the deepest individual fields ever in the state meet for Minnesota, today definetly gave everyone what they expected and more. We had the underdog almost take it, the dominating team effort and of course the heart-breaks as well. On the team side, Willmar dominated the field with an outstanding score of 41 and a new state record for team average of 15:49.4 The battle for second was very tight too as Rosemount captured 2nd with 114 to Eden Prarie with 119. Last week at sections, Eden Prarie beat Rosemount 74-76. Willmar was led by Kaafi Adeys in 5th with a time of 15:30.5 and Abdi Awale in 7th in 15:36.4. Finishing up Willmar's oustanding day was Mahad Hassan in 14th, Mohammed Bedel in 16th and Mustafa Yusuf in 23rd. Andrew Nicklawsky finished 59th and Scott Boros finished 98th. The biggest surprises came on the individual side as Hassan Mead had to come from behind to overtake Jonathon Stublaski for the title. Mead came in undefeated and the favorite to win the title, but Stublaski came in ranked 8th and the dark-horse in the field as no one knew where he would finish. With about 800 to go, Mead and Stublaski broke away from Elliot Heath (2005 champion) and Rob Finnerty (2004 runner-up) and Stublaski had a 10 meter lead with about 100 meters to go but couldn't hold off the late charge of Mead. Heath came in third followed by Finnerty. Adeys made a late charge to come from way behind and catch Ryan Little for 5th place. In the first 200 meters, one of the top runners, TC Lumbar, tried cutting in, but clipped a runners leg and fell down. Being a tough runner he sprinted hard to catch up with the front pack and held on for 2 miles, but couldn't keep the pace after wearing himself out int he beginning. Lumbar took 2nd last year, but finished a dissapoint 18th this year. Results |
