In my opinion the first and foremost important thing to remember when it comes to working with dragons is to give these wonderful beings the respect they deserve. They chose to work with you, guide and become friends with you of their own free will, it is their choice we must always remember that and never take our draconic companions presence for granted. You do not posses a right to their friendship or a right to their aid and attention, if you believe otherwise then, in my opinion; you really should not be walking this path. If you believe that you can summon dragons to do your bidding at your whim through dragon magick then stop reading this page now and go back to your Dungeons & Dragons rulebooks, your World of Warcraft server or what ever place it was that gave you that notion.
Working with dragons is not something that should be taken lightly and only dabbled in with a passing interest as some people do; mere dabbling is an insult to the dragons who would seek to guide you along the path. Nor is dragon magick a path that is an easy ‘walk in the park’, it can be hard at times and brutal on many levels at others, at times it can even be dangerous, however where there are the downs there are always ups just around the corner. I have found some of the experiences I’ve met along the way thrilling, intense and in some instances even humbling, leading me down a path to find who I truly am underneath the trappings of this life.
Dragons work quickly and so must you to keep up with them, many keep the quick pace in the early stages (in my experience) to prepare you for the path you walk and to help you leave old ties behind, stop you dwelling on the excess baggage you may start with on this road. You need to leave the old baggage behind otherwise the road maybe become unnecessarily hard, and drain you spiritually and emotionally. Since starting down this path I have been on a physical, mental/emotional, and spiritual rollercoaster and with each step I have taken I have grown stronger, I have changed and it has left me a better person and it will continue to do so. Of course this is what I have experienced personally and may or may not be similar to what others experience.
Something I have had people ask me a lot is ‘Why do the dragons not answer my calls to them?” There are two simple answers to this question. The first answer would be that the dragons are aware of your presence but do not feel that you are ready to meet them. The second answer is that the dragons are aware of you but feel that whatever it is you are going through in life at that moment in time you need to go through alone, maybe because there is a lesson to be learned from that experience or because going through it alone will make you a stronger person as a whole. Another question I am often asked is “Why is it that a dragon helped me here but will not do so now?” there are a fair number of possibilities, maybe you need to go through the situation unaided. Maybe the dragon is there aiding you but wishes to remain unseen or maybe the situation you were in previously a dragon decided to help you knowing you were not completely ready to walk with dragons but appeared to help you and give you hope and to give you the resolve to carry on seeking your path. When you are ready to walk, run and dance with dragons the right dragon will find you.
