Now I had been involved in the AmeriCorps program for over a year by this point and as a group we had accomplished some pretty amazing things—from building a boardwalk to putting on the puppet show, and so much more. One day, in the middle of December, I went down to AmeriCorps. I was in the AmeriHouse with my AmeriFriends and we started discussing all the problems there were with the program. How this person was such an incompetent manager and that person had no right being on the payroll… How one person was given credit for work that we did… How under appreciated and overworked we were. It was an all out, no holds bared, bitch session. Now, those of you who know me know that I do not use profanity very often, and this is because I believe they are vile, or as they have been called so often, “bad” words. But I use one do describe that day in AmeriCorps because it is probably one of the ugliest experiences of my life. I was focusing on everything negative there was in the program. It was so bad that my site coordinator, Lisa, was visibly upset about what went on and told us to stop several times, which we begrudgingly did… eventually. |
