NOTES from Pam Wilson, January 1999: I assume this first group of Alabama settlers were the ones from Edgefield Co, SC. I believe this John Arledge was the John H. Arledge, son of John and Anna of Edgefield Co, SC, and that Isaac was his brother Isaac D. Arledge.

If anyone knows what became of this Isaac D. Arledge, please let me know; we have a grave for his wife Rachel in Wilcox Co, AL, but I have seen no indication of the place or date of his death or the existence of a will, which would help greatly in establishing his offspring!

My theory is that John H. ARLEDGE had two wives. By his first wife, his sons included Jonathan, Martin, Moses D. and William Arledge. By is second wife he had a son John Franklin.

A JOHN ARLEDGE acquired land (41 acres) through the Cahaba Land Office in Alabama on 1 October 1835. Two weeks later (15 Oct 1835), an ISAAC ARLEDGE (his brother?) acquired land there as well. In 1837, land patents were issued to JONATHAN, MOSES, ISAAC, MOSES, ISAAC, ISAAC, and JOHN ARLEDGE for various acreages (39-79 acres). There is another patent to JOHN ARLEDGE in July 1838 for 79.81 acres.

Is this the John ALDRIDGE listed in the 1840 census in Wilcox Co, AL?

In October 1840, land patents were issued to JOHN and ISAAC ARLEDGE for 80.125 and 78.44 acres respectively.

These are all the land patents issued to ARLEDGE through the Cahaba Land Office of Alabama. All indicate a St. Stephen's Base Line.

In Nov 1858, MARTIN ARLEDGE received a patent through the Greenville Land Office (also St. Stephen's base line) for 79.81 acres.

[Elsewhere in Alabama, land patents were issued to ELI ARLEDGE (October 1851 and January 1859) through the Lebanon and Centre Land Offices (Huntsville base line) for 39.93 and 39.97 acres respectively; to TILMON ARLEDGE in May 1837 through the Demopolis Land Office (St. Stephens base line) for 40 acres; to JOHN ARLEDGE in May 1850 through the Huntsville Land Office (Huntsville base line) for 40.15 acres; and to SAMUEL ARLEDGE through the Montgomery Land Office (St. Stephen's base line) in December 1889 for 80.2 acres.

I'm still working on the Fairfield Arledge puzzle, but this TILMAN (one of *two* Tilmans at this time) was Tilman Ford Arledge, the son of William Arledge (son of Isaac SR) and his wife Sarah Ford. He ended up in Poinsett Co, Arkansas with his brother William Gardner Arledge, where they both became quite prominent. This ELI and SAMUEL were also from the Fairfield line.]

The Edgefield family seems to have moved through Alabama and conquered Mississippi as well, after 1841. Earlier today I sent out the land records showing a patent acquired (probably through proxy) for JOHN ARLEDGE through the Columbus, MS land office in Feb 1841. Then in 1854 we find acquisitions by MOSES (most certainly John H's son Moses D. Arledge, who ended up in Milam Co, TX) and to a MILLY ARLEDGE, who is a mystery--anyone know who she might have been?? Then lots of land to John H. ARLEDGE in 1859-1860.

The JAMES E. ARLEDGE in the 1885 land records from the Jackson, MS land office was most likely JAMES ELBERT ARLEDGE, the son of ISAAC D. ARLEDGE, or possibly the JAMES E. ARLEDGE who was the son of JONATHAN ARLEDGE (But since the latter was born in Texas, I think it less likely).

Just some musings upon finding these land records. Any ideas?? Please contact me (Pam Wilson pwgs@sgi.net)

An overview of documents Claire sent:

I. Confederate Pension Applications (and Widow's Applications):

A. John ARLEDGE of Callahan Co, born 1847, formerly of Williamson Co., son of Jonathan and Mary Ann ARLEDGE [who we know married in Monroe Co, AL]; says there is a family bible with documentation of all of Jonathan and Mary Ann's children in possession of one of John's sons in early 1900s

B. Mrs. M. B. ARLEDGE, widow of G.L. (Garrett) ARLEDGE of Montague Co.

C. Mrs. I. M. ARLEDGE, widow of John Hugh ARLEDGE of Rockdale, Milam Co.

II. LAND RECORDS

A. Francis M. ARLEDGE [according to my records, a son of Jonathan and Mary Ann ARLEDGE], 160 acres in McCullough Co, TX 1 Jan 1879, bought with Bexar Pre-Emption

B. William M. ARLEDGE, 1280 acres, bought with Bexar (Confederate) Scrip, in Kinney (Kimrey?) County on W. Prong of Nueces 17 miles NE of Brackett, for the benefit of the permanent school fund, 23 Mar 1882 [My records show William M. ARLEDGE to be yet another son of Jonathan and Mary Ann Arledge]

C. W.M. ARLEDGE, for Sabine Scrip, 1280 acres [for State sur. see Bexar Scrip. Correct on maps of Sabine Co July 18/82]. Certificate for Confederate Scrip for 1280 acres granted by an Act of 9 April 1991 to "persons who have been permanently disabled by reason of wounds received while in the service of this State, or of the Confederate States...A like amount of land shall be located by virtue of this certificate for the benefit of the permanent School Fund, before either location shall be patented, and both locations shall be made upon any of the Public Domain of Texas not reserved by law from location." Survey field notes made for Murison & Malin of Austin, TX by virtue of Confederate Scrip issues to William M. ARLEDGE, in Sabine Co on waters of Housen Bayou and Six Mile Creek, tributaries of Sabine River, about 9 miles from Hemphill. 26 Dec 1881. Also attached: A document dated 9 August 1881 by William M. ARLEDGE of Brown County, TX appointing land agent J.H. Collett (of Austin, Travis County) "my true and sufficient attorney" to make application for me to sell and convey the land certificate to which I am entitled, at the best price. Another document sells land certificate to Murison and Malin of Travis County.

D. Coleman ARLEDGE 80 acres, Houston Co, 17 Aug 1857, bought with Houston Scrip [acc. to my records, a son of Clement Arledge and Martha Ginn of Fairfield CO SC then Franklin Co, TN; thus, a nephew of Cyrus]

E. John F. ARLEDGE, Houston Scrip, 80 acres. Land scrip issued 29 April 1857 following act to authorise the Location, Sale and Settlement of the Mississippi and Pacific Railroad Reserve that entitles bearer to survey any vacant and unappropriated domain of the State of Texas within the limits of its "Reserve", for 80 acres to be surveyed in a square.Surey in Houston County about 10 miles from Crockett. One of survey signers was F. ARLEDGE. Survey dated 10 Dec 1857 and certified 8 May 1858. Another survey is for 80 acres surveyed for Jno F ARLEDGE in Houston County about 23 miles NE of Crockett, surveyed 10 Nov 1858 and certified 22 Jan 1859.

F. John ARLIDGE, Houston Co on waters of White Rock Creek of Trinity River, about 6 miles from Crockett, 25 Sept 1871; 350 acres. There is a very interesting clause that's hard to read that says: "Field notes of a Survey of 350 acres ... made by virtue of Duplicate Certificate No 4/197 1st class. Spued (?) by S. Crosby on 31st day of May 1864 for one third of a League. Original No. 163 pued (?) by Board Comrs of Harrisburg Co date not given to hiers Isaac ARLIDGE Dec..."

G) G. L. (presumably Garrett Longmarr) ARLEDGE, Fannin Pre-Emption (Act of 1870 for disposal of Public Domain land), 160 acres Montague County, 1 Oct 1873. Includes plat and field notes of survey, on waters of Clear Creek, a tributary of Trinity River, 12 miles SE from town of Montague. An E.C. ARLEGE was one of names who certified that survey was legally made. Yet another corrected survey date 28 Nov 1877 was signed by W.M. ARLEDGE and S.W. Chatham, Chairmen, and surveyed by Wm. Yarbrough; another Proof of Settlement Under Homestead Act form dated 11 August 1879 states that G. L. Arledge has occupied said land since 1 Dec 1873. [QUESTION: Who is this E.C. ARLEDGE? Could this be his brother Erasmus (who we thought stayed in Louisiana)? I can't find any other E.C. Arledges in my records. Ideas?? And is this W. M. ARLEDGE the WIlliam M. in the other land documents, of Brown and/or Kinney Co, TX??]

H) Joel C. ALDRIDGE, Milam Preemption, 3 June 1871, 160 acres in Comanche County on waters of Rush Creek, trib. of the Leon River. One of survey signers "Chain Carriers" was A.B. ALDRIDGE. A Proof of Settlement form dated 6 May 1879 states that he has occupied said land since 14 May 1876. Corrected surveys in 1879 seem to adjust acreage to 157 acres.

I) Joel H. ALLDREDGE, Nacogdoches County. Original certificate for headright for "late Emigrants' dated 28 Dec 1839 good for 320 acres by Republic of Texas, County of Nacogdoches. Headright Certificate dated 21 Nov 1851 granting any 15 acres of vacant and unappropriated public land, it being the unlocated balance of Headright Certificate # 536 issued by Nacogdoches Co to said Joel H. ALLDREGE for 320 acres dated 19 Feb 1850. Many other documents, including a Survey dated 24 Nov 1851 for 15 acres on Moral Bayo a tributary of Angelina River about 6 miles from town of Nacogdoches. Another document describes the first 305 acres. Name always spelled ALDRIDGE or ALDREDGE, etc. never ARLEDGE.

III. Recipients of "Donation Land Certificates" (presumably for service for the Republic/State of Texas):

A) Isaac ALDRIDGE, 600 acres, 4 Mar 1857, having "fallen with Fannin in the massacre at Goliad"; signed at Austin

B) Collin ALDRICH, 640 acres, 11 Jan 1839, "having fought bravely at the Battle of San Jacinto 1836"; signed at Houston, approved 5 Mar 1852
