For this ancestry report, PLEASE READ the notes and proceed with caution. Many of these relationships are speculative and need further proof. New evidence indicates that some of these relationships may be INCORRECT. I do not think we have enough evidence that the Rev. Henry ALDRED was the father of JOHN ALDRIDGE. There has been a great deal of misinformation about these ancient family connections, and some thorough research needs to be done to prove or disprove the conjectures put forth in earlier published works.
I will present two versions below. The first (the more cautious of the two) only takes the line back to John Aldridge and Agnes Anna Rosse/Rolfe. Following that, I will print my notes about the Norfolk Aldridge family from whom many people claim we are descended.

Ancestors of Clement Aldridge
Generation No. 1
1. Clement Aldridge, born September 25, 1636 in [or christened 25 Sept 1635] Worstead, Norfolk, England1; died January 19, 1698/99 in Northumberland Co, VA. He was the son of 2. Clement Aldridge and 3. Susan ??? Boswell. He married (1) Alice ??? Bef. 1668. She was born 2, and died September 01, 16682. He married (2) Elizabeth Tilles/ Tills October 18, 1668 in Worstead, Norfolk, England3. She was born 1646 in Worstead, Norfolk, England, and died September 20, 1699 in Northumberland County, Virginia. She was the daughter of William Tills and Mary ???.
Lived in Bowtracy and Fairfield Parishes north of the Wicomico River (in 1698 these parishes merged to form St. Stephen's Parish, the records of which are in the State Library of VA).
children: see remnants of Northumb. Co Births and Deaths, 1650-1810, p.3 [Names are illegible; clarified in Franklin Aldridge and Alice Sekanick books, but don't know their source].
Many, many references to Clement and Elizabeth in Northumberland Co. Order Book. Many lawsuits over tobacco. Occasionally the spelling Arledge or Aldredge appears instead of Aldridge. See F.R. Aldridge's "Aldridge Records, Vol. II" for a thorough listing.
1668 Court order determining that Clement Aldridge stands indebted to Richard Haskins and that Aldridge should pay Haskins 680 pounds tobacco.
Northumberland County Court 21 Aug 1672 (Book of Orders p. 156): "Whereas an attachment was awarded to Mr. THO" MATHEW agt ye Estate of STEPHEN BYLAND for five hundred & fowreteene (514) pounds of tobacco and caske, wch Attahcment is returned executed on soe much in ye hands of CLEMT: ALRIDGE: Judgement is granted ye sd MATHEW agt ye sd ALRIDGE for ye sd summme with costs. [Ruth and Sam Sparacio, Order Book Abstracts]
Death dates in some sources given as 19 Jan 1698/9. This conflicts with Franklin Aldridge's claim that he remarried in 1701 to Mary Donaldson, for whom documentation exists. Further evidence leads to conclude that it was his SON Clement who married Mary Donaldson. Others say it is unclear whether Clement died in Northumberland County VA where he lived or died in England where he was born. However, there are references to Clement's will being proved in Nortumberland County on 19 Jan 1699; one of the witnesses was Mary Tullos [reference: NEED TO FIND: O.D. Lindsay, Virginia Colonial Abstracts, Vol. 1, p. 52; cited in article on Rodham family in Northumberland Historical Society Bulletin, XII, 1975.]
21 Aug 1678: Graves Garrett son of Thomas Garrett, dec'd, bound to Clement Aldridge [Northumberland County Court Orders p.1].
17 Aug 1681: William Leach, orphan and noe Estate, bound to Clement Aldridge [Northumberland County Court Orders, p.99].
Clement was a joiner by trade and, in 1678, took Graves Garratt as an apprentice. In November, 1674, Clement and Thomas Flynt were requested by the court to inspect a building for its worthiness, and on November 19, 1679, he was paid for mending the parish church.
On June 7, 1679 the Court of Northumberland ordered the list of tithables divided into forties; each group of forty was ordered to deliver an able man along with a horse, arms and other provisions to the house of Thomas Mathew. Clement was one of the men charged with the responsibility of insuring that this order was carried out (Co. Court Note Bk. IX:16, 26).
15 Nov 1693: CLEMENT ALDRIDGE and ELIZABETH his wife vs. WILLIAM BEANE, nonsuit, and C. and ELiz. to pay damages [Northumberland County Court Orders, p.632]
On May 16, 1694, Clement was appointed constable for Cherry Point Neck, one of six constables appointed for the county [Northumberland County Court Orders, p. 652].
16 Oct 1695: CLEMENT ALDRIDGE was one of witnesses (along with CAPT. RODHAM KENNER and Mr. THOMAS BUSHROD) to probate the will of Mr. CHRISTOPHER NEALE, as petitioned by HANNAH NEALE, Executrix. [Northumberland County Court Orders, p. 711]
17 Mar 1797: ELIZABETH ALDRIDGE wife of CLEMENT ALDRIDGE, JUNR, relinquishes her rights of dower to 64 acres of land sold to THO.MILLER. SHe also relinquishes dower in the sale of 60 acres to JOHN CRALLE. [Northumberland County Court Orders, p. 759]
19 Jan 1698/9: Motion of ELIZABETH ALDRIDGE, Exx. a Probate to her of the Last Will of CLEM'T ALDRIDGE, proved by DAVID STRAUGHAN and MARY TULLOS. [Northumberland County Court Orders, p. 759] Clement's will was presented to court on January 19, 1698-99. Unfortunately, this will was destroyed in a courthouse fire.
[21 Sept 1699: Motion of CLEM'T ARLEGE, probate to him of the last will of ELIZ. ARLEGE his wife, proved by Edw'd Barnes and Hugh Staten. [Northumberland County, VA, Court Orders, p. 66] . This is most likely a reference to the next-generation CLEMENT, who also had a wife Elizabeth.]
There are many references to land bought FROM Clement Aldridge/Arledge. For example, the 1726 will of JOHN CRALLE, SR. of St. Stephen's Parish (written 1 Oct 1726, proven 16 Apr 1728) , aside from stating his desire "not to have any funeral sermon, and that there be no superfluity of drink disposed of at my funeral", left his son John Cralle sixty acres of land in "Cherry Point" WHICH I BOUGHT OF CLEMENT ABRIDGE, JUNR. [Northumberland Co. Record Book, 1726-1729, p. 97]
The following is excerpted from an email to Clay Fulcher from Carolyn Jett, on January 13, 1997, with my notes in brackets: "Clement Aldridge/Arledge was in Northumberland by 2 Apr. 1667, which was when he witnessed the will of the Reverend David Lyndsay. He was a neighbor of Lyndsay, whose gravestone (or half of it) is still there. That gives us the general location of Aldridge/Arledge's land, in the area known as Cherry Point Neck. On 20 9ber [November] of probably 1666 or 1667, Clement purchased 100 acres of land. Nearby was another tract of 100 acres belonging to Cloud [Claudius] Tullos. It is possible that this Clement Aldridge was the same man who married Elizabeth Tilles at Worstead, Norfolk, England in 1668. If so, he must have returned to England to marry her, for he was here before that date. At any rate, the wife of Clement of Northumberland was Elizabeth. Many researchers think that he was the Clement Aldridge who was christened on 25 Sep. 1636 in Worstead, son of Clement and Susan Boswell Aldridge. Clement Aldridge/Arledge was a master joiner [carpenter]. There are several records proving this in Northumberland records [WHERE?? WHICH ONES??]. Clement Aldridge died in 1698/9 in Northumberland. He left six children [WHAT IS THE SOURCE OF THIS INFORMATION?], who were 1. Clement Aldridge, Jr., d. 1705/6, m. (1) Elizabeth and (2) Mary. He left a daughter, Elizabeth, who was 12 years old by 1710. [SOURCE??] 2. daughter - no further info. 3. daughter - no further info. 4. William Arledge - d. 1724/5, m. (1) Alice and (2) Sarah. See below. 5. Isaac Aldridge 6. John Aldridge."
Northumberland County Record Books 1743-1749 (p.166) show a will of Richard CRUTE dated 11 August 1746 (proved 8 Dec 1746) who said he desired that his son Richard "might be bound to SAMUEL ALDREDGE to learn the joyners trade." Who is this SAMUEL ALDREDGE??
See Franklin Rudolph Aldridge, Aldridge Records, Vol. 2. 1975 (139 Ewing Dr, Nashville, TN; avail from Gen Soc of CJCLDS); esp pp. 176 ff, "The Arledge Family Records" (Ch. 11). Bischoff, 1965), and John Bennett Boddie, "The Allred (Aldridge) Family in England and North Carolina" in Historical Southern Families, vol. X (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co, 1966).
Notes for Elizabeth Tilles/ Tills: Elizabeth Tills/Tilles was descended from a family which had long resided in Norfolk, England. The earliest record of someone by this name in Norwich is the 1374 will of William Tillis. Other members of this family also immigrated to America and are mentioned in Northumberland County records in conjunction with the Aldridge/Arledge family. (Sekanick, 1994, p. 60)
Some sources have her date of death as 6 Dec 1684.
The following is a Northumberland County VA court record sent to Clay Fulcher from Patricia Daniels, Jan 26, 1997:
Court 21 Sept 1699, page 66. Motion of Clem't Arledge, probate to him of the last will of Eliz. Arledge his wife, proved by Edw'd Barnes and Hugh Staten.
Generation No. 2
2. Clement Aldridge, born 1601 in Worstead, Norfolk, England; died Abt. 1668 in Northumberland Co, VA. He was the son of 4. John Aldrich/ Aldridge and 5. Agnes Anna Rosse/ Rolfe. He married 3. Susan CROMPTON (she was apparently first married to Edmond Boswell in 1612, which is why many researchers have her listed as Susan BOSWELL) July 02, 1626 in Worstead, Norfolk, England (could be July 12, 1626). 3. Susan Crompton, born 1605 in Worstead, Norfolk, England.
The Northumberland County Record Book 1666-1670 (p 100) includes a grant from Sir WILLIAM BERKELEY unto ABRAHAM JOYCE and RICH: THOMPSON of 200 acres of land in ye county of Northumberland, bounding upon the land of THOM. ADAMS and PHIL: CARPENTER & upon ye land of HEN: ROACH and upon ye land of GEO: COURTNEY & WALTER WEEKES, beginning at a marked corner red Oake and running southerly 320 pole and westerly 100 pole, Northerly 320 pole and Easterly to ye place where it firtst began; ye sd land being due to sd JOYCE & THOMPSON by & for ye transportacon of fower (4) persons into this colony whose names are on ye records menconed underneath this patent...the 7th day of March 1666. WILLIAM BERKELEY
Know all men by these presents yt I ABRAHAM JOYCE doe assigne all my right & interest of ye withing mentioned patent to CLEMENT ALDERIDGE his heirs and assignes for ever. Wit: JOHN ROBERTS, RICH: ROBERTS, sign ABRAHAM JOYCE. Recognized and recorded 20th 9ber 1666.
This raises many questions--who were the 4 persons Joyce transported--did they include Clement and Susan? And why did he deed his patent over to Clement?
There is also confusion in the Northumberland Co, VA records about *which* Clement was involved in certain transactions, since there were several generations of Clement Aldridge/Arledges.
The following is excerpted from an email to Clay Fulcher from Carolyn Jett, on January 13, 1997: "Clement Aldridge/Arledge was in Northumberland by 2 Apr. 1667, which was when he witnessed the will of the Reverend David Lyndsay. If so, he must have returned to England to marry her, for he was here before that date."
The will in question is that of DAVID LYNDSAY, MInister of God, who bequeathed his estate to his daughter HELEN LYNDSAY, who he also named his Executrix. Will written 2 April 1667, Signed in presence of JAMES CLAYTON, ye mrke of CLE:MT ARLIDGE and GEORGE DEACON. Proved 8 April 1667 by ye oathes of JAMES CLAUGHTIN & CLEM: ARLIDGE. Northumberland County Court Records.
It is most likely that these early records were for the elder Clement.

Notes for Susan Crompton Boswell: Teri Allred [in her Winter 1994 "Aldridge and Allred of the South" newsletter] cites a letter written by Sylvia M. Allred of W. Jordan, Utah, to John Lisk in 1976:
"In her second letter, she is discussing Susan BOSWELL who married Cleent ALDRED/ALDRIDGE 2 Jul 1626. She states that after Susan Boswell's name in the marriage record to Clement, it definitely states "widow." On 24 june 1612, an Edmond BOSWELL married Susan CROMPTON. If that is the case and this is confirmed, the maiden name of Clement ALDRIDGE's wife would be CROMPTON instead of Boswell."
1 i. Sr. Clement Aldridge, born September 25, 1636 in [or christened 25 Sept 1635] Worstead, Norfolk, England; died January 19, 1698/99 in Northumberland Co, VA; married (1) Alice ??? Bef. 1668; married (2) Elizabeth Tilles/ Tills October 18, 1668 in Worstead, Norfolk, England.
ii. Elizabeth Aldridge, born April 08, 1627 in Worstead, Norfolk, England.
iii. John Aldridge, born February 08, 1628/29.
v. Alice/Alise Aldridge, born September 01, 1633 in [christened] Worstead, Norfolk, England4; married Samuel Pycroft May 12, 1673 in Worstead, Norfolk, England.
vi. William Aldridge, born September 25, 1635 in Worstead, Norfolk, England; died 1665 in Northumberland Co VA.
WILLIAM ALDRIDGE is listed among 22 people in the Northumberland County Order Book, 1652-1665 [p.69 of Sparacio Abstracts--need to get earlier page to find out what the issue was].
"Alderidge, William. Died from accidental gun shot. Jury of inquest called. He exonerated all persons before his death. 17 Nov 1662. 15. 84" [Beverly Fleet, Virginia Colonial Abstracts, Vol. XIX, Northumbria Collectanea, 1645-1720 (Balt: GPC, 1971]
There is a lengthy hearing recorded in the Northumberland County Record Book 1658-1662 (p. 85) : Mr. PETER ASHTON his Warrt for the acquiring of the Estate of WM. ALDERIDGE...who was lately wounded with the shott of a gunn & dyed thereupon." A Jury of Inquest of "Twelve Discreet men" was impaneled to view the corpse and inquire as to the cause of death. Dated 19 9ber 1662... This is a fascinating and lengthy account, but the most intriguing information if the description of "The examination of WM ALDERIDGE, Mercht, of the Katch "Martey" of ROADE ISLAND now ridinge in Greate Wicocomico River taken before us PETER ASHTON and WILLIAM NUTT, Gent., two of his Maties Justices of the Peace of Northumberland County" and the description of the man who did the shooting, SAMUEL LEGG, , as "Master Katch" and the "good friend" of William Alderidge... Sworn before DANIELL NEALE, PETER ASHTON & WILLIAM NUTT. (apparently the original copy is badly damaged since many words or missing or illegible). [from Ruth and Sam Aparacio's Deed and Will Abstracts of Northumberland County, VA, 1658-1662 (The Antient Press, nd) pp. 188ff.
*However*, there is ALSO a William ALDRIGE who immigrated to Westmoreland County, VA before 1665, per a patent grant to Col. Peter Ashton for 500 acres in Westmoreland Co, 12 Oct 1665, p. 421, for the transport of 10 persons, including Wm. Aldrige. [Nell Marion Nugent, Cavaliers and Pioneers: Abstracts of Virginia Land Patents and Grants, 1623-1800, Vol. 1 p. 531 (Richmond: Dietz Printing, 1934).

OB 1652-65, 187.
Is this the same WIlliam or another? Could THIS be Clement's son William, rather than the William who died in 1662?
Then, after the death of the first William, a WILLIAM ALDRIDGE witnessed the sale of 483 acres of land from PETER ASHTON to JNO COCKERALL on the Great Wicocomicoe River, dated 27 August 1668 and witnessed by HEN: HUDSON and WM: ALDRIDGE; recorded 20th 9ber 1668.
Clay Fulcher wrote in Jan 1998: Thanks for filling in some of the gaps...from what you've said here, there has to be two William ALDRIDGE's, both known by Peter ASHTON, one of them dead in 1662, and the other alive in 1668. Two William's came over because Peter Ashton twice received land for transporting a William ALDRIDGE, each William at a different time.

Apparently one of the WILLIAM ALDRIDGEs (the one who was the son of Clement and brother of GEORGE) went to Talbot CO, MD, according to the book "Colonial Families of the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Volume 3," by Robert W. Barnes & F. Edward Wright, which discusses the Aldridge Family of Talbot Co, MD, and says that GEORGE and WILLIAM ALDRIDGE were brothers:
1. (N) Aldridge, left at least two sons: William and George
2. George Aldridge, son of (N) (1), bro. of William, d. by Feb 1676/7. He m. Anne (N), who m. 2nd, John Mitchell. At some time, see seems to have had a son whose surname was Bullpit. George Aldrigg of TA Co. d. leaving a will dated 1 Oct 1673 and proved 16 Dec 1679 (after his wife had already remarried). Named were wife Anne, extx., to whom he devised 350 a.; two sons, Benjamin and George were to have the plant, when wife died. Other children named were George, Thomas, Mary and John. Son John was to remain with his mother until 21 yrs. of age. Dau. Grace was devised 250 a., Old Mill. The will was witnessed by Philip Stevenson, Edward Stevens, and Jonas Davis. {MWB 10:73}
Lynn Mendel "Nicholas Aldridge was living in Anne Arundel County as early as 1678
and perhaps before, when payment of 50-lb. tobacco was made to him. He
was in the rent roll August 1680 for land on the south side Magothy River.
In 1707 his rent was twelve shillings for the three hundred acres that
was granted to him 1681.
"Lord Cecilius Culvert of Baltimore the second took up when his father
died in establishing a colony in Maryland about 1634. The grant included
all the land between the fortieth parallel and the southern bank of the
Potomac River. Thomas and Nicholas Aldridge, who may have been brothers,
lived in the county of Anne Arundel. Thomas was granted by Cecelius Calvert
one hundred acres of land called "Aldridge Lott" in Baltimore County, in
Chesapeake Bay, and on the eastern side of the bay, and on the west side
of Chara Creek. Rent 4 Shillings, 9th June 1675. Nicholas Aldridge was
granted by Chas. Calvert (Charles George Calvert the third Lord of Baltimore),
three hundred acres land Called "Aldridge His Beginning" in Anne Arundel
County. Rent 12 Shillings, signed 11th July 1681.
"A shilling is worth about $0.07 1/2 so Nicholas paid about $0.90 for
his land. Thomas Aldridge paid about $0.30 for his land. We do not know
if this rent was collected Monthly or Yearly. He was 28 years old when
he received this land and only lived on this land for 27 years, since he
died in 1708, at age 55 years.
"Thomas and Nicholas land grants were very near one another, both being
near the county line of Anne Arundel and Baltimore Counties, so near they
both attended the same Parish in Anne Arundel, where both their children's
birth and Marriages were registered. Their parish was All Hollow Parish.
"After an extensive search of East Wellow, England church records, I
found no records of a Thomas Aldridge with a father Nicholas Aldridge.
I feel that the Thomas mentioned in the land records is probably a cousin,
not a brother, since there was a Thomas with a different father (John Aldridge)
mentioned."

Apparently John was absent from home for quite some time, and Agnes/Anna remarried and had at least one child by her new husband, Edmund/Edward Boutman, whom she married on 2 Feb 1596 (while stil legally married to Aldridge). Her offspring William is probably the son of Boutman, according to Sekanick (59).
Sekanick, citing Boddie, writes: "John Aldrich and his wife were involved in a domestic dilemma which surely caused acute embarrassment to his clerical family. It seems that he was absent from home for some time, and, thinking him dead, his wife remarried one Edmund/Edward Boutman on February 2, 1596. John's reappearance and the resulting dilemma were addressed by Bishop Redman during his visit to the Diocese of Norwich in 1597; he noted, "Ann Aldrige. For having two husbands living." The problem was resolved, and she returned to her husband, John Aldrich." (59)

ADDENDUM:
Ancestors of Henry (Rev?) Aldred/ Aldrich
(*possibly* the father of John Aldridge b. 1558)
Generation No. 1
1. Henry (Rev?) Aldred/ Aldrich, born Bet. 1528 - 1538 in Norwich or Worstead, Norfolk County, England; died 1593 in Worstead, Norfolk, England. He was POSSIBLY the son of 2. John Aldrich, Mayor of Norwich & Mem. Parliament and 3. Elizabeth Sotherton. He married (1) Margaret Boswell Bet. 1544 - 1554 in London, England (probably his first wife)1. He married (2) Elizabeth ??? Bet. 1553 - 1557 in Norfolk, England (probably his 2nd wife and mother of children)2. She was born Abt. 1534 in Worstead, Norfolk, England, and died November 13, 1612 in Worstead, Norfolk, England.
However, there has been much debate over the date of Henry's birth, ranging from 1528-1542. Norwich, Norfolk records (I'm not sure *which* records), as transcribed by Allen Aldridge's cousin Connie Service, give a date of 1538; since that is the most primary source, I will go with that date, though it does present a conflict with the date, from the same source, of when he became Vicar. In addition, the IGI provided by the LDS provides very contradictory information, and again, the sources for such information are not clear.
Other sources (again, I'm not sure *which* sources) say he was the Vicar of Worstead, England in 1553. This date may have been inscribed or transcribed wrong, given his date of birth. Alice Sekanick [following Mrs. Boddie's publication], says he became vicar of Worstead "following the dissolution of the priory of Bromholm when the manor belonging to the priory, the rectory and the patronage of the vicarage were granted to the dean and chapter of Norwich" (59).

Aldridge of Durham, NC); Broderbund WFT 1 #49 [Aldridge, Jones and Daugherty of NC, England, submitted 6-12-95]. Also LDS Ancestral File. Alice Sekanick, "The Hutchison Family" (1994); she cites Mrs. John Bennett Boddie, "The Allred (Aldridge) Family in England and NC," Historical Southern Families, vol X (Balt: GPC, 1966).
The wife of Henry and mother of his children could have been either of at least two women:
1) Elizabeth (last name unknown), who is listed by a source in the LDS IGI as marrying a Henry Aldred in Norfolk in 1553 and alternately 1557.
2) Margaret Boswell, who is listed in the IGI as marrying a Henry Aldred in London in 1544 and alternately 1554.
3) Margaret Brown, the choice preferred by Connie Aldridge Service based on her research in the Norwich, Norfolk, records (and provided by Allen D. Aldridge of Durham, NC). This gives the marriage date as June 04, 1557 and Margaret's date of death as April 25, 1610.
Another source has a marriage date between Margaret Browne and Henry Aldred (Jr) as June 4, 1599 at Marsham, Norfolk, England. I do not know the original source of this information, but it is also listed in the LDS IGI (British Isles). This is more likely the marriage of the younger Rev. Henry Allred (1571-1648).
For these reasons, it is unclear which Henry Aldred Margaret Brown married, and whether Margaret Boswell and Margaret Brown might be the same person or have become confused at some point in historical reckoning. And which of these women was the mother of John Aldridge, father of Clement?
The LDS records are very conflicting about this family, and it's really just a mess to try to sort them out, since they are not primary sources. For example, the LDS IGI (British Isles) version, lists the following marriages of a Henry Aldred:
1544--London--Margaret Boswell 1553--Norfolk--Elizabeth 1554--London--Margaret Boswell 1557--Norfolk--Elizabeth
Then there are three marriages listed in Norfolk in 1585 between Henry Aldred (presumably the son of this Henry) and Alice, Cecilie, and Dorothy. Obviously, all three of these marriages did not occur the same year.
The IGI-BI also gives a date of 4 June 1599 for a marriage between Margaret Browne and Henry Aldred in Marsham, Norfolk, England. Is this the wrong date, or do we have Margaret married to the wrong Henry in the wrong era? Who should we beleive--the records from Norwich, or the IGI records?
******** New information received March 1998: [Source: Venn, J. and Venn, S.C. Admissions to Gonville and Caius College in the University of Cambridge March 1558-9 to Jan 1678-9. London: C. J. Clay and Sons, Cambridge Unive. Press Warehouse, Ave. Maria Lane, 1887, pp. 13-14 (Copy in LDS Family History Library, Salt Lake City).] Information provided by Teri Allred.
"ALDRICH, HENRY. Matric. pens. from TRINITY, Easter, 1563. Son of John of Norwich, and brother of Thomas (1557-8). B.A. from Corpus Christi, 1567-8, M.A. 1571. Fellow at Corpus Christi, 1569-79. Licensed to teach grammar at Norwich, May 1583. Died 1593. Benefactor to the College."
Is this the same Henry?? This does provide the needed evidence that John Aldrich, Mayor of Norwich and Member of Parliament, had a son named Henry. However, it appears that this Henry was NOT a Reverend, since he taught grammar and is not listed as having church affiliations as are all the other Cambridge grads who became men of the church. The only REV. HENRY ALDRED listed in the Cambridge University directory during this time period was the younger Henry ALDRED (1571-1648).
Also, since it appears that most young men matriculated at age 16, this would set HENRY ALDRICH's date of birth at around 1547. This would seem to make him too young to be the father of JOHN ALDRICH born October 1558.
Generation No. 2
2. John Aldrich, Mayor of Norwich & Mem. Parliament3, born Bet. 1509 - 1518 in Norwich, Norfolk, England; died Abt. 1582 in Norwich, Norfolk, England (altar tomb in St. Clement's Church). He was the son of 4. Thomas Aldrich, Sheriff and Mayor of Norwich and 5. Elizabeth Clark or Wood. He married 3. Elizabeth Sotherton in prob. St. Michael-at-Plea or St. Clement's, Norwich, England. 3. Elizabeth Sotherton, born March 1505/06 in Framingham, Suffolk, England; died Abt. 1587 in Norwich, Norfolk, England. She was the daughter of 6. Nicholas Sotherton.
"John Aldrich was sheriff in 1551, burgess in parliament in 1555, 1558 and 1572. Blomefield states that as such he received 4s. per diem. He was mayor 1558 and 1570. He was the son of Thomas Aldrich, mayor in 1507, and married Elizabeth, daughter of Nicholas Sotherton, alderman, by whom he had inter alios a son, John, an alderman, who died in 1583, having married Faith, daughter of Augustine Steward. He was a grocer by trade. He died about 1582, giving f5 to the poor. His altar tomb is in St. Clement's Church. He lived in the Flint house, now absorded by the Labour Exchange, at the west side of St. Clement's churchyard. It was formerly the "sun and Anchor", a weaving factory belonging to the Custances and then to the Willetts, and later the warehouse of Messrs. C. and F. Bolingbroke. The ancient carved door, originally from Walsingham priory, is now in the Castle Museum. The spandrels of other doors with "1570", the date of his second mayoralty, and the initials of John Aldrich and Elizabeth his wife, are said to be incorporated in the interior of the Exchange. There is a quarry of stained glass in St. Clement's church window consisting of a knot containing the initials I.A., which Mr. T.G. Bayfield thought to be those of John Aldrich. It was during his mayoralty that there was a popish conspiracy in Norwich. His merchant's mark is recorded by Ewing."
Connie Aldridge Service's notes (from Allen D. Aldridge of Durham NC) from the Norwich, Norfolk library records say John Aldrich was born c 1518 and died 1583, was Mayor of Norwich in 1558 and 1570, and was married to Elizabeth Scherton (possibly mis-transcribed from "Sotherton") and Faith Steward.
LDS Ancestral File gives earlier birthdate of John (1509) and says he was married c 1537 to Elizabeth Sotherton. Marriage to Faith is not mentioned [see my note below]. The LDS IGI gives two birthdates for John--one version as 1502, and one as 1509.
Connie Service's records divide the children between the two wives; however, the LDS IGI (British Isles) lists all of them as being the children of John and Elizabeth--Thomas, John, Elizabeth [who is not mentioned on Connie's Norwish list; rather another John is listed], Timothy, Anne, Hester--and gives dates of birth for them. Henry is not listed. Bennett also lists Faith as this John's second wife after Elizabeth Sotherton, andthe mother of his final four children.
I interpret the passage from the Cozene, Hardy and Kent book to mean that Faith Steward married John's *son* John Aldrich [which would solve many of the logistical problems]. For this reason, I have deleted Faith as a wife of this John and put her as wife of John and Elizabeth's son John.
Archibald Bennett says: "These names appear in the list of wills proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury:
1582 JOHN ALDRICHE, alderman, citie of Norwich, 27 Terwhite 1583 JOHN ALDRICHE, citizen and alderman of Norwich, 2 Butts"
(The meaning of "27 Terwhite" and "2 Butts" is not clear to me, but it is apparently related to the court session.)
Bennett seems to believe these are both records of John (Sr)'s death, but it appears from the Cozene, Hardy and Kent book that the first is the will of the father and the second of his oldest son.
The other problem that Bennett's records present is a list of children who are the product of the marriage of John Aldrich and Faith Steward. Bennett believes them to be the children of the elder John Aldrich, but it seems more likely that they were the children of the *son* John Aldrich and Faith Steward, and that the second son John Aldrich that Bennett presents was in fact his grandson, *son of his son John*. It seems that the identities of this father and son have been collapsed in many accounts. I this case, I trust the Cozene, Hardy and Kent history more than Bennett.
Finally, Bennett does not MENTION Henry as a son of John Aldrich.
___________________________________
Still, I'm wondering--what evidence do we have that Henry Aldred was the son of John Aldrich? This is a crucial piece of the puzzle that needs better documentation. See Cambridge University records for Henry (listed under Henry Aldred).
Notes for Elizabeth Sotherton: The LDS IGI (British Isles version) lists an Elizabeth Sotherton as being born in Mar 1506 in Framingham, Suffolk, England, the daughter of Nicholas Southerton. This is most likely the same Elizabeth who married John Aldrich, although other LDS IDI sources date her birth at 1512, 1513 and 1521.
(possibly) 1 i. Henry (Rev?) Aldred/ Aldrich, born Bet. 1528 - 1538 in Norwich or Worstead, Norfolk County, England; died 1593 in Worstead, Norfolk, England; married (1) Margaret Boswell Bet. 1544 - 1554 in London, England (probably his first wife); married (2) Elizabeth ??? Bet. 1553 - 1557 in Norfolk, England (probably his 2nd wife and mother of children).
ii. Thomas Aldrich, born October 1530 in DOB seems early cf to University matriculation date (see Notes)4
Not listed as a child of John ALDRICH by Bennett.
Notes for Faith or Faythe Steward: Date of birth from LDS IGI (British Isles), naming father as Augustine Steward. Marriage to John Aldrich (Jr) as opposed to John Aldrich (Sr) confirmed by Cozene, Hardy and Kent's "The Mayors of Norwich, 1403-1835."
v. Timothy Aldrich, born Abt. 1546 in Norwich, Norfolk, England5; died in died young.
vi. Hester Aldrich, born Abt. 1548 in Norwich, Norfolk, England (christened 14 Apr 1555 at St. Clement's, Norwich)6; died Bef. 1620 in Norwich, Norfolk, England; married Alexander Thurston; born 1551 in Norwich, Norfolk, England; died 1620 in Norwich, Norfolk, England.
"Alexander Thorston, a qrocer and mercer, was sheriff in 1587, mayor in 1600, and burgess in Parliament in 1601. He was son of Edmund Thurston, citizen of Norwich. He married Hester, daughter of John Aldrich, mayor 1558, and lived in the large flint house (No. 8; Fye Bridge Street, now the property of Youngs, Crawshay and Younqs, Ltd.) on the south side of the churchyard. The initials A.T. are on the north-west corner of the house. There was a fine chimney-piece here (now at the house of Sir Henry Holmes, Upton Road, Norwich) with his merchant's mark and the date 1599 in one spandrel, and the arms of Aldrich (or on a fess vert a bull passant proper) in the other spandrel. On another stone chimney-piece still in situ (etched by Ninham) there is also his merchant's mark and the date 1599 in one spandrel and the Aldrich arms in the other spandrel. He survived his wife and died without issue and was buried in St. Clement's church in 1623. His will was proved in the P.C.C."
Generation No. 3
4. Thomas Aldrich, Sheriff and Mayor of Norwich, born Abt. 1473 in prob. Great Yarmouth; moved to Norwich by 1488; Norfolk Co, England7; died Bef. July 17, 1529 in Norwich, Norfolk, England (Bur. St. Michael-at-Plea). He was the son of 8. William Aldrich, Bailiff of Yarmouth and 9. Alice ???. He married 5. Elizabeth Clark or Wood Abt. 1503 in (unsure of source of date; seems a bit late). 5. Elizabeth Clark or Wood, born Abt. 1477; died Aft. 1530. She was the daughter of 10. Gregory Clark.
Other Norwich, Norfolk records collected by Connie Service say he was born c 1489 and was Mayor of Norwich in 1516, and married Elizabeth Wood [Cozene, Hardy and Kent say he married Elizabeth Clark, the daughter of sheriff Gregory Clark].
Archibald Bennett's account: "THOMAS ALDRICH, son of William, was born around 1473 probably in Yarmouth. He removed to the city of Norwich, and became Alderman there. The records of the Guild of St. George, Norwich, 1389-1547, show that THOMAS ALDRED was listed October 13, 1488; THOMAS ALDRYCHE April 6, 1496; THOMAS ALDRICHE March 17, 1497; THOMAS ALDRYCHE April 7, 1525. These spellings show the changing characteristics of the surname at that early date."
Bennett continues: "He married ELIZABETH WOOD, of Fulborne, Cambridge. They were the parents of sixteen children, twleve of whom died young. The husband and wife are both buried in Our Lady's Chapel in St. Michael's Church in Norwich."
[Archibald Bennett, "Introduction" to Rulon C. Allred's The Allred Family in America (Salt Lake City, 1965), pp.1-36 ff.]
LDS Ancestral File supplied earlier birth date, marriage date, wife's birth date, and husband's death date. The LDS IGI says he was born around 1472 in Greater Yarmouth, Norfolk. Here, I use Bennett's date, since his work is the best-researched.
Quotes from Cozene, Hardy and Kent: The Mayors of Norwich, 1403-1835
"Thomas Aldrich, a draper, was sheriff in 1497 and mayor in 1507 and 1516. During both years of his mayorality he went to London on city business. His merchant's mark (dated 1510) is recorded by Ewing. His father and grandfather, each named William, had been bailiffs of Yarmouth. There is some confusion in the pedigree in the Herald's Visitations, but it seems that he married once only, namely Elizabeth daughter of Gregory Clark (sheriff 1477). Among his issue were Thomas, mayor in 1558 and Margaret "whiche died in hir floryiching youthe" in 1535 and was buried in Yelverton. His eldest son was Gregory and his daughter Anne married Ralf Wilkins, mayor in 1527. He resided in the parish of St.Michael-at-Plea, and owned property in Ber Street and in Swardeston (Mangreen Hall), Dunston and Hemlyngton. He died between January 1528-9 and the following July and was buried in the Lady Chapel in St. Michael-at-Plea. His will was proved in the P.C.C."
"Thomas Codde was one of the most worthy men that ever served the office of mayor. He was sheriff in 1540 and mayor in 1549. He was again chosen on Michaelmas Day 1555 on the death of Felix Puttock, the then mayor. He took his charge on the Sunday before Midsummer Day 1549. He, with Thomas Aldrich, signed the petition of grievances, organised by Kett, and he was therefore in favour with the rebels, when they encamped round about the city. But the city was his first care and he denied them passage and urged them to moderation. Kett, however, imprisoned Codde and Aldrich in Mount Surrey on Saint Leonard's hill, but afterwards released Codde. The citizens feared that the rebels would destroy him, for they cried: "Let us come together to-morrow, for we shall see a cod's head sold in the camp for a penny." However, he spent most of his tIme in the camp, and appointed Augustine Steward his deputy. It is said that when Kett demanded the keys of the city, Codde answered: "I will qive the blood and and life out of my body before I will by villany trecherously forsake the city, or through fear or cowardice wickedly cast off my allegiance to my king." This great rebellion having at length been ended, he retired to live in his house in King Street, which stood opposite the church of the Greyfriars and was, about 1860, occupied by Thomas Lound. In 1936 it was the residence of Walter Riley, Lord Mayor."
