Notes for MARY LEFEVER/LEFEBER: July 16, 1925
Mrs. Mary F. Arledge age 71, died at an early hour Wednesday morning at the home of her son, Capt. T.E. Arledge, Union Avenue, after a lingering illness. She has been in failing health for the past two years and since last November had been confined to the house. Two days ago there was a turn for the worse. Although given every possible attention she failed to rally and the end came quietly after midnight Tuesday. Mrs. Arledge was born and reared at Winchester, but for many years she had been a resident of Chattanooga. She had been a member of Centenary M.E. church, south, for more than thirty years and was a woman of fine Christian character. She is survived by a daughter Mrs Ola Mitchell, and four sons, Capt. T.E. Arledge of the local fire department, and a number of other relatives. Funeral will be presided by Rev. L.L. Evans.

Notes for SARAH BELLE MUSE: Email from Mary Muse weezy@hou.quik.com, 11 and 12 May 1999:
Pam,
(1) While researching my own family, I noticed that my great grandfather's sister Sarah Belle Muse married a Tom Arledge in Tennessee. Muses were in Franklin County. I was wondering if this Arledge was one of yours. Do you have any information on this?
(2) Thanks so much for your help. I almost had the connection from your webpage, but was getting confused. It seems that everyone at that time named their children after their brothers, uncles, fathers, etc... Same in my family, it gets so that I can't figure out who's who!
My great grandfather James Henry Muse (Sarah Belles brother) is the only member of the family in which we do not have a lot of information regarding his siblings. We know about everyone except for Sarah Belle and sister Lucy Idella. My "kissin cousin" worked the Muse family from 1633 down to my great great grandfather Kindred Wilson (Belle's father), and his siblings. Please note the following webpage:
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/jwmuse/musefam.htm
It references the work: Two volumes have been printed by members of the Muse Reunion Association, Inc. entitled A Southern Legacy: Descendants of John Muse of Virginia. "A Southern Legacy: Descendants of John Muse of Virginia, Volume II", compiled by Dr. Roger David Chambers privately printed in 1997.
As I recall, Volume I does mention the children - Sarah Belle, James Henry (my g g grandpa), and Lucy Idella. It stops there without mentioning the childrens' marriages. Volume II does note James Henry and one of his children, but can't remember the information regarding Belle and Lucy. I will check this week.
For any of those Arledges wishing to review Belles line in the Gedcom on the above webpage, please note the following route(?):
John Muse Sr. b. 1633 - Thomas Muse Sr. b. 1665 - James Muse Sr. b. 1710 - Daniel Muse b. 1744/1750 - Dennis Burns Muse b. 1812. It stops there, I'll fill in briefly: Continues with Kindred Wilson Muse b. 1842 - Sara Belle Muse b. 1869. I can fill in about James Henry on down if they are interested. Please note that this gedcom just shows the line and really has no other information. The books are the way to go if they want complete histories.
Another cousin worked up to great grandfather with no mention of his sisters. So you see, we know very little about Belle. My Aunt mentioned meeting one of the sisters at one time, so I will talk with her some more about this. Also have some pictures of James Henry and people I have no idea who they are. Will get my aunt to view and see if Belle is one of them.

JAMES CYRUS AND SAVANNAH SHAFFER ARLEDGE
JAMES CYRUS ARLEDGE, b. February 16, 1839, Limestone County, AL; son of Joseph and Lydia Slaughter Arledge. His family moved to Fannin County, TX in 1853. He was almost sixteen when his father died, when he had to take on some of a man's responsibilities. When he was 19, he married SAVANNAH SHAFFER on October 25, 1858 in Bonham, Fannin County, TX. Their first son, John, was born in Fannin County. By 1861 James was in Parker County with 160 acres and agent for John Shaffer on another 160 acres(1), both in Bear Creek area in the southeast corner of the county. He had livestock, slaves and personal property and was apparently beginning to farm. The Shaffers soon joined him there.
In March of 1864 his wife and son were listed among indigent people of Parker County whose provider was in the service of the State of Texas or of the Confederate States. This is the only service record for him in the Texas State Archives, with none listed in the National Archives, though oral family history states that he served in the Civil War. In 1866 he was back on the Parker County tax list as owning 160 acres. No further listing on Parker County tax records. Family history states that the Arledges and Shaffers left because of increasing Indian troubles.
After the Civil War began, the U.S. Army protection in the forts on the Texas frontier was withdrawn, and the Confederacy could not protect it. The Comanche Indians began raiding settlers again, from Weatherford to Lampassas and Mason. All families of Parker and Palo Pinto Counties moved into Weatherford.
By the 1870 census James Cyrus was farming in Fannin County. He had made a good recovery, his real estate being worth $3000 and personal property worth $700. He later had other business interests. His was a respected family in the community, and they were financially well off.
SAVANNAH SHAFFER ARLEDGE, b. August 14, 1842, AL, was the daughter of John and Cynthia Harris Shaffer; d. September 21, 1917. She was kind and loved by her daughters-in-law and grandchildren. She told the grandchildren the hardships of traveling in horse-drawn wagon without help of slaves/servants after the Civil War. She is buried in Willow Wild Cemetery in Bonham.
James C., Savannah and their family were members of the Christian church in Bonham. He was an elder when the church split in 1894 due to differences about how missionaries should be supported. They and their grown children, George and JAMES SHAFFER went with the group that formed the Church of Christ. Their eldest son, John F. and family went with the First Christian Church, which soon added instrumental music. There were some injured feelings, which never completely mended, although the family remained close.
James C. died of bronchial congestion at age 57 on August 31, 1896. He had had a good deal of bronchial problems in his later years. He is buried in Willow Wild Cemetery, on the west edge of Bonham on Hwy. 121.
(1) Abstract of Land Titles, p. 613; General Land Office, Austin, TX. Land was patented on August 9, 1859 by Jas. C Arledge and John Shaffer.
Notes for SAVANNAH SHAFFER: Savannah Shaffer is the daughter of John and Cynthia Harris Shaffer.
In the early part of 1845 Savannah Shaffer's parents moved to TX. Arriving in the middle of February, they settled on what is now known as Arledge Ridge. James and Savannah made a home on Arledge Ridge, clearing the land of its heavy timber and thick brush. They lived there for over thirty years, and then moved to Bonham. James died August 31, 1896 in Fannin Co., TX, and is buried in the Willow Wild Cemetery there. Savannah died September 21, 1917, and is buried beside James. There were 8 grandchildren surviving. A George Arledge served as a private in "The Stanley Light Horse" formed July 6, 1861 and later absorbed into the Independent Mounted Volunteers, Texas 14th Brigade. ("Gray, Powers, and Interrelated Families", Ames, 1992, p. 97)
In 1906, George Wade Arledge went to Nolan Co., TX to look at the John R. Lewis and Sons ranch. George Wade's nephew, J.S. Arledge, had advised his uncle of the West Texas opportunity. George arrived in Sweetwater on the Texas and Pacific and hired a hack to take him first to the "69 Ranch" to pick up his nephew, and then to the Lewis ranch. He liked the ranch and bought it. Later, he was joined there by three of his sons and their families. About 1915, he traded the ranch, now the Eagle Creek ranch, for the Bar X Ranch in Nolan and Coke Counties. The following is a mini-biography from "The History of Houston County, Texas."
Armistead Albert Aldrich was the author of the book, "The History of Houston County, Texas." He was born on the same day that his father was first elected County Clerk of Houston County. The house in which he was born then occupied the site of the present Tenney Memorial Presbyterian Church. His first school was taught by Miss Margaret Hall, later Mrs. John S. Shivers, where he learned his alphabet. Later his teacher was Mrs. Jane Blair, the wife of Colonel John Blair, a veteran of the Mexican War. His next teacher was Mrs. Lucy Collins, who was his teacher in 1870.
In 1871, he was a student under Major John Spence, one of the noblest men who ever taught school. One year, 1874, he studied with George P. Miller. After that from 1875 to 1877, he was a student under Hon. W. E. Page, one of the ablest instructors who ever followed the profession of teaching. He finished his high school work under Mr. Page, and at his suggestion in 1877, attended the University of Virginia during the session of 1877-1878. He then began the study of law, in the well known offices of Nunn and Williams, and was admitted to the bar in 1883. His political life began as alderman of the City of Crockett, in 1890. In 1892, he was elected County Judge of Houston County and held the office for two successive terms. In 1900, he was elected as Representative to the 27th Legislature and served one term only, not offering for a second term. He attended many State Democratic Conventions and was chosen Presidential Elector in 1936, and attended the second inauguration of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
He was a member and elder of the Tenney Memorial Presbyterian Church, a life member of the Knights of Pythias, and honorary member of the board of directors of the Crockett Chamber of Commerce, a charter member of Crockett Lions Club, and was for nearly thirty years a member of the board of trustees of Austin College, who conferred on him the honorary degree of L.L. D. on May 31, 1937.

From Robert Thornton "Bob" Arledge. The following has been edited from research, written, and contributed March 22, 1990 by Mary Jane Arledge Murray:
JAMES SHAFFER ARLEDGE
JAMES SHAFFER ARLEDGE, b. December 19, 1872, Bonham, Fannin County, TX, son of James Cyrus and Savannah Shaffer Arledge. He spent his early years on his father's farm, attended public school in Bonham and Carlton College in Bonham, a private school, first grade through high school. Then he and his cousin, John Wren, spent one year at Transylvania University at Lexington, KY, later the University of Kentucky.
While away at school, James and John read in the Bonham paper a farmer's advertisement for a wife. They answered, using a fictitious female name and a picture of a good-looking girl. The correspondence was carried on for some time, there was a proposal, and a date set for the "lady" to arrive on the train. The farmer met the train, but no one appeared. The boys had a great time envisioning the scene.
When Jim and his cousin returned home from KY, Jim went to work with his brothers in the mercantile business. It was located in the building that in 1983 housed Bonham Office Supply. That was in 1892. In 1894 he had a bad throat, so spent some time in San Antonio, where it was warmer, and Colorado Springs, where it was dryer. His cousin, John Wren went with him to Colorado, and stayed for a while. In 1895, the mercantile company became J.B. Russell and John F. Arledge General Merchandise. In 1896, it became Russell, Arledge and Rainey. In 1898 Jim and his brother Ed went into the General Merchandise business for themselves.
On June 17, 1896, Jim married Martha Ann (Mattie) Thornton. He built a house in Russell Heights on the outskirts of Bonham. The house cost $1,467 to build and $114 to furnish. There the first three children were born: Lylian Grace on July 3, 1897, Mary Gladys on March 16, 1899, and James Thornton on August 5, 1900. In 1904 Jim and Mattie went to the St. Louis World Fair, while her parents stayed with the children.
By 1904 Jim was having stomach problems, and it was decided that they would move west and ranch. They settled on a 30 section ranch, the 69 ranch, south of Sweetwater, in Nolan County, TX. Jim, his brother John and Hugh Halsell, a Dallas banker friend, had formed a cattle company. Jim acted as secretary, treasurer and manager. He bought south Texas steers in the spring, grazed them until fall, and then shipped them to the Kansas City market. He put them on the Orient Railroad in Sweetwater, then transferred the cattle at Amarillo to the Katy (Kansas--Texas) Railroad on to Kansas City.
He told some good stories about the cattle business. Once when waiting to transfer the cattle, he was spending the night in a hostler's bunkhouse. Some of the occupants were rough and dirty. Jim noticed that there was one more man than there were beds, and he didn't want to sleep with anyone. So he began to scratch and scratch, and finally turned in early, while the others were playing dominoes. When they were turning in, he awoke to hear one fellow say, "I'll just sleep with Arledge. He's got the itch, and I have, too."
They had a tough foreman once who always had a rolled cigarette in his mouth, and was addicted to coffee. He kept coffee in his saddle bags and had a can at every water hole, where he would stop, build a little fire and make coffee. It was said that he could drink boiling coffee out of a red-hot can.
Jim was soon well thought of around Nolan County. He would buy steers from local farmers, who had no market for their cattle. He gave them a fair price and would ship their cattle with his. Once a man told Horace that his dad was the best man in the world, and recommended he grow up to be like his dad.
However, Jim managed somehow to make an enemy, a man who was a big fiddler who bragged he would surely beat up on Arledge, for some reason or other. So Jim carried a gun for a while. Later this man became such a good friend, that Jim borrowed money for A.C.C. from him.
The Arledges had their ranch stocked with 1200 cattle. Their life was typical of rural areas right after the turn of the century. There was no church or school for miles. The family worshipped at home. Mattie taught her children at home. When they could, they would go to worship in Roscoe or Sweetwater.
Lights were kerosene lamps. They kept their milk, butter and perishable food in the coolness of the spring house, some immersed directly in the spring, and contained in crocks, some beside the spring in a "safe", a box made of wood, screen and muslin soaked in water to cool by evaporation. One spring house bit of excitement Horace remembers was discovering on a plate covering a crock a comfortably coiled rattlesnake. One year a huge icicle formed at the spring, five or six feet long. They used it to make ice cream on Christmas Day.
The bathroom, of course, was the outhouse. When one went to the outhouse in the winter, one was to bring back a stick of wood to keep the fires supplied. And for winter and nights there was the chamber pot, or slop jar, under the bed for emergencies. it had a cold enameled or crockery seat, and had to be emptied and cleaned in the morning. Water came from a well, sometimes with a pump at the kitchen sink. Water was heated in a large reservoir on the side of the wood-burning cook stove. it was dipped out with a bucket into a tin tub behind the stove, where the family took turns taking baths. Washing was done in the yard, when possible, in iron pots over an open fire, using a scrub board of corrugated tin. Soap was made in the same pots from grease or lard, purified, and water poured through ashes to make lye. Mattie strained her lye water and grease so well, her soap was almost pure white. Bluing was used to whiten the clothes. Mattie also took great care in scalding dishes and utensils, in caring for milk vessels and in preserving food to avoid sickness in the family. They grew much of their own food, "eating what they can, and canning what they can't."
At the ranch were born Shaffer on October 27, 1905, Ed on November 9, 1907, and Horace on April 20, 1912.
When the Orient Railroad went south of Sweetwater through Nolan County, the town site of Maryneal was established. In 1907 the home was moved to the ranch corner adjacent to Maryneal. A school was started, and the family worshipped in the school building. They were the congregation. They organized a community Sunday school and brought in preachers each month, such as Caleb Sewell, uncle of J.P. Sewell, his brother, W.A. Sewell, and J.H. Mead, whose family established Mead's Bakery in Abilene.
On May 16, 1911, James S. Arledge was elected to the board of trustees of Childer's Classical Institute of Abilene. It became Abilene Christian College in 1912 under the direction of J.P. Sewell. Jim was a trustee until 1937, and president of the board from 1916 until 1933. First Lylian, then Gladys were sent to Abilene to finish their high school education and go on to college.
In 1913 the family moved to Abilene, so that all the children could be educated in Abilene Christian Academy. Each summer the family, or part of it, would go to the ranch. They travelled to Sweetwater on the interurban train, then rode the Orient train south to Maryneal.
In 1917 the 69 Ranch was sold and a smaller ranch was bought in Coke County, near Bronte. The family kept this ranch until 1927, when there was a prolonged drought. When they went to Bronte, they went from Maryneal in a Model T Ford. The household goods were moved by wagon.
When the family first moved to Abilene in 1913, they first lived in the McDonald house on South First Street, two blocks west of Sayles Blvd. Next they lived at North 2nd and Orange Street. The third house was at 682 College Drive.
In 1927 James Arledge became fiscal agent for ACC. He was prominent in moving the college from its downtown location to the present one on "the hill". He developed the land owned by the college, and built his home nearby in 1929. That year the move of ACC was complete, and in November the stock market crashed. Many supporters and parents of students lost money. Farmers and ranchers also suffered, Jim among them. Money for ACC was very short, but the generosity, sacrifice, self-denial, determination of character and vision of many teachers and supporters of ACC kept the school alive. The college was strengthened and made to grow by people who would not give up. One of these was Jim Arledge.
In 1934 he went to work in the bookkeeping department of West Texas Utilities. In dealing with delinquent accounts, he used his persuasive abilities to get people to do the right thing. And these reluctant bill payers were usually nice to him, partly because of his manner and probably partly because of his age. He held the position for over 24 years, retiring at age 85. He served as an elder for the Abilene College Church of Christ from 1917 until 1960. He died on May 3, 1963, and was buried in Masonic Cemetery in Abilene, Taylor County, TX.
John C. Stevens, president of ACC at that time, said of him, "Jim Arledge was the head of a strong family that accomplished much despite hardship and adversity. There are not many such families. He, with his wife, built a solid and enduring home. He saw that his family worshipped the Lord and got an education. He taught his family faith and respect for high principles. He took part in the struggle to get ACC started. His children and grandchildren have been faithful Christians and respected citizens of their communities."
From "Gray, Powers, and Interrelated Families," Ames, 1992, p. 101-102: James Shaffer "Jim" Arledge worked on his father's farm, and attended elementary schools at Bonham. He attended Carlton College, a private school in Bonham, and spent a year at the University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY. He then worked in his brother's general store, and later joined him as a partner. Jim married Martha Ann "Mattie" Thornton June 17, 1896 in Sealy, Austin County, TX. She attended Sam Houston Teachers College and was a member of the Carlton College faculty when they met. Jim wanted to raise cattle and West Texas looked very inviting. In 1904 he moved his family to a ranch near Roscoe. He went to Sweetwater and organized the Hassell-Arledge Cattle Company capitalized for $100,000. The company purchased 20,000 acres of grassland in Nolan County, and established the "69 Ranch." One drought year they had 1200 head of steers, very little grass, and no place to pasture them. He wintered 500 head on a ranch north of Roscoe for 20 cents/head/month, and the rest on his ranch. Money was as scarce as moisture. There was no market. Finally he sold 1000 head of four-year-old steers to a buyer in Fort Worth for $30/head. The cattle were driven to the railroad. In 1913, they moved to Abilene to educated their children. Jim sold out in 1917, tripling his investment. Jim was a long-time patron of Abilene Christian College (ACC). He was business Manager for the college during its years of expansion. In 1934 he became a collector for the West Texas Utilities Company, a position he held for 24 years. In 1950, they both were honored by the "A" Club of Abilene Christian College, and he received the "Honor Award of the Year." Jim served as a member of the Board of Trustees of ACC for 23 years, and was a chairman of the board for 17 years. He was a member and Elder of the College Church of Christ.
Notes for MARTHA ANN THORNTON: Robert Thornton"Bob" Arledge wrote: the following was researched, compiled, and written by Mary Jane Arledge Murray:
Martha Ann Thornton "Mattie" Arledge, was born August 27, 1874, in San Filipe, Austin Co., TX, and was the daughter of John Wesley and Sarah Jane Pratt Thornton. Martha Ann "Mattie" was her father's youngest child, born when her mother was 35 years old. She was much loved and doted on by her parents. Her mother wrote to her when she was teaching, as "my darling child" and "my little girl." Mattie was eight years younger than her closest half-sister, Nannie. Florrie was ten and a half years older, was concerned about her, gave her advice and advanced money for her normal school education. Molly "Mary Luna" was fourteen years older, and quite fond of her. There was a strong bond between them and they wrote often. Lelia was sixteen years older, and Oliver Clarence was twenty years older. Mattie grew up in Sealy, TX, where she finished high school. She attended Sam Houston Normal, now Sam Houston State University, in Huntsville. For two years, from 1893 until 1895, she taught at Carlton College in Bonham. She was soon accepted in the circle of young single adults in Bonham. She went out with several young men, including Jim Arledge. Often they went in groups to each others houses for ice cream socials, to play games of croquet, whist or charades. They went to picnics, to musicals, theatricals and church. The young men sent around formal notes asking to escort the young ladies, and the young ladies replied with equally formal notes. Mattie's mother didn't approve of her going buggy riding or other outings on Sunday afternoon. Sunday was the Lord's day and a day of rest. She probably would not have approved of young couples pairing off to "hunt pecans or grapes" or "pick flowers", either, but Mattie did all these things. By the fall of 1894 Mattie was going steady with Jim Arledge. When she was at home during the summer, she and Jim corresponded. They told of their activities and discussed the issues of the day. Some of these were: Are women as intelligent as men, and should they be allowed to vote and hold office? Should young women be educated? What was woman's roll in the business place? Mattie was firmly for women's rights. Jim said he believed women had rights to acquire knowledge and there was no limit to a woman's capability, but they could go so far as to lose a man's respect. They began to write weekly, when Mattie's mother made her promise to stay home a year. Jim was invited to Sealy for Christmas 1895, he proposed and Mattie accepted. However they decided to keep their engagement secret from their friends, until closer to their wedding date in June 1896. Their courtship letters were sweet and chaste. In the last letter Mattie wrote Jim before he came to marry her, she said, "It's a little over a week until we look each other in the face and vow before God to be true until death. God in Heaven helping me, may I be a true helpmeet to you. May we help each other bear the crosses of this life, for they will come. I do not look for a sea of smooth sailing all along this journey. This world would be too much of a haven of rest; we would not wish to go to another, but whatever comes, may we walk hand in hand toward that City where we will be rewarded with a bright welcome. May that thought guide us." Jim was to come to Sealy on the train the day before the wedding, in time to get the license. He wired Mattie's father, "Missed connection. Be there tomorrow. Get license!" They were married on time on June 11, 1896. They went to San Antonio on their wedding trip. Mattie felt responsible for the welfare of her parents. After only one month of marriage, Mattie had to leave Jim for almost two months to take care of her mother, who was very ill. Her father was nearly blind by 1897. Jim kindly offered them a home in Bonham, where he had built a house in Russell Heights. They intended to build a house for the Thorntons on their large lot but never did. They did come to live with Mattie and Jim by 1900. Mattie's rather dominant mother kept her somewhat in the background. Things became more difficult when Sallie Thonton became a diabetic semi-invalid in 1911. Jim was patient and kind to his in-laws, and Mattie endured her mother's demands and advice. These facts speak of the underlying devotion between Mattie and Jim. Their relationship stood firm and probably grew stronger. They were a source of refuge to each other. They carried on their lives and marriage, despite difficulties and problems. Mattie raised seven children to adulthood with love and humor. She was foremost in the lives of her children. She taught them Bible stories and taught the older ones their school lessons until there was a school in Maryneal. Her home was hospitably open to all comers, and she did much for others. She doted on her children and grandchildren. She made and sent a birthday cake to each child for many years, canned and sent favorite foods to her sons in the military service, and engineered family gatherings as often as possible. She always had cookies baked when the grandchildren came to visit. When Ed died in 1927, the total strain was too much for Mattie. She had to get away. Lylian, Gladys and Horace took her to Colorado for the summer. After Mattie's mother died in 1928, Lylian said she became a different person, more outgoing and livelier. I remember the love my grandparents showed toward each other. Grandmother could be coy and do quite a bit of sweet-talking. She was reared in the Methodist church, but became a member of the Church of Christ when she married my grandfather, and was a faithful, working Christian all her life. There is no doubt my grandparents' influence is still being felt several generations later. All their children attended Abilene Christian College, most of them graduating, and some going on to work for higher degrees. All those who married, married Christians. I remember my grandmother churning butter, a time when she talked with me and let me churn a little. She always had cats, but never made pets of them, or let them in the house. But when I was in college in Abilene, she kept my cat and thoroughly spoiled him, letting him in the house at all hours of the day and night, and feeding him all kinds of delicacies. Martha Ann Thornton Arledge died May 13, 1957, in Abilene, Taylor County, TX, and is buried in Masonic Cemetery there.

LYLIAN GRACE ARLEDGE
Lylian Grace Arledge, b. 7-3-1897, Bonham, TX, daughter of James Shaffer and Martha Ann Thornton Arledge. Her family moved to the 69 Ranch in Nolan County in 1904. She was taught at home by her mother for three years. These years she gloried in the freedom to roam the ranch, playing along the bank of Sweetwater Creek and at the spring house, where the family kept their milk, cream, butter and other food cool. When the Orient Railroad was built across the ranch in 1907, the town of Maryneal was established. Lylian, Gladys and Thornton went to school in a one-room school house, a half mile from their new house on the corner of the ranch and townsite. Their teacher was Miss Mary McDonald, daughter of one of A.C.C.'s first trustees. In 1912 Lylian went to Abilene to enroll in the 8th grade of Abilene Christian Academy on the N. First Street campus. She was graduated in 1915. With "nothing special to do", she enrolled in art class, then in home economics at A.C.C. She then enrolled in the College of Industrial Arts (now Texas Women's University) in Denton, and after a year, returned to teach the academy class. She returned to Denton for another year, completing her junior year there, and was honored by the A.A.U.W. as an outstanding student. She taught part time and completed work for her B.A. degree at A.C.C. She became a Home Economics instructor at A.C.C. She received her M.A. degree from George Peabody College of Nashville, TN, in Home Economics and Art in 1927. She also attended summer sessions at the University of Colorado in 1922 and 1936 where she loved getting out in the mountains, The University of Texas in 1940 and Iowa State College in 1948. Lylian was head of the Home Economics Department at A.C.C. from 1927 to 1947. She taught full time until 1966, and part time for three more years, devoting these later years to her favorite subjects: family relations and child development. Her cooking was unsurpassed, especially her cakes. Lylian taught the girls in her Home Economics classes that they should stay home and stretch the dollar while their children were small, rather than going out and earning it. Mothers needed to teach basic good character to their children. She said if you could make a dress out of a coat, then you had done something creative and worth while. Lylian was baptized in 1909 and was for many years a Bible teacher of pre-school and college age girls in the College Church of Christ, Abilene, TX. She stayed young by being with young people and sharing her many interests with them. Though never married, she had many children who cherished her acquaintance long after they were grown, among them nieces and great-nieces. I Remember her as one of the few older people in my life who was my "contemporary" in many things, as well as a respected advisor. I was never interested in homemaking skills when we were together the most, but she helped me to enjoy nature, beautiful scenery, camping, gardening, art and family history. I wish I had written down all that she told me about the history of the family. Lylian died at 78, on March 5, 1976, after a long illness with cancer. She is buried at Masonic Cemetery in Abilene, Taylor County, TX. John Stevens, President of A.C.C., said, "She was quiet and unassuming, strong and self-controlled, inwardly adorned, a gentle spirit." J. D. Thomas, A.C.C. professor, said, "Like the woman in Proverbs, her character portrayed beauty. She was industrious and efficient, full of hope, joy, love and faith, and her works praise her."
Autobiographical Sketch of Lylian Grace Arledge
I was born in Bonham, Texas; went with my family to the 69 Ranch south of Sweetwater. My brother, sister and I had a wonderful time roaming up and down the creek and riding our little half shetland pony. I was ten years old before I started to school, however my mother taught my sister and me and we started in the 3rd grade in a one teacher school and Miss Mary McDonald was our first teacher. McDonald Hall (dormitory on the A.C.C. campus) is named for her father. I came to A.C.C. in the fall of 1912 and stayed in the dormitory (the White Cottage) and Mother and Father Sewell looked after us girls. I began in the 8th grade and Sister Daisy Sewell was my Bible teacher. She was a wonderful teacher. The next year my family moved to Abilene, but we would move back to the ranch in the summer time. I graduated from the Academy in 3 years, then took art under Sister Sewell and Home Economics under Mrs. G.C. Morland for 2 years. I spent 1917-18 at C.I.A., came back and taught a year in the Academy -- 8th and 9th grade English, History and Home Economics. I went back to C.I.A. for another year and finished my Junior year, but finished my senior year at A.C.C. in 1921 along with my brother and sister. We had all started to school the same day and received our degrees the same day at the same schools. I started teaching Home Economics in the fall of 1921 and have never taught in any other school and have taught here ever since, except for one year in 1926-27 which I spent at Peabody working on my Masters Degree. Since then every few years I have gone to school during the summer on an average of every five years. I have had several lovely trips. The summer of 1924 my sister and I took a delightful six week trip to Virginia -- Charlottesville, Richmond, Jamestown, Norfolk, Washington D.C. and then went by boat to New York City, and on our way back we visited in Tennessee. Two years ago we went to Grand Canyon, Disneyland, Knox Berry Farm, Pepperdine College in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Portland, Oregon. We took that beautiful trip up the Columbia River Gorge to Mt. Hood. We came back through Salt Lake City and Denver. The summer of 1961 Miss Essie Rambo and I had a wonderful trip by way of New Orleans to Florida to visit some ex-students in Gainsville. We visited Saint Augustine, Marine Land, Cedar Keys and other points. I taught a class of boys in Camp Cookery for four years; for some of the interesting experiences ask Mr. Lawrence Smith. In 1957 we began our Nursery School and I have been having the time of my life ever since, never a dull moment. The children are smart, cute, and lovable. A lot of the time they are smarter than the girls (college students) and I are. I have had two sets of girl twins and one set of boy twins which are lots of fun. I have the children from 8 - 12 noon and they give us a pretty good working over. Last year the girls wanted to know what kind of vitamins I took. Last November a year ago we moved into the lovely new Nursery School building which Dr. Marie Wilmeth gave us. It is so nice and convenient that it is a delight to use. I have been so happy that I could enjoy it before I retired. It has been a wonderful privilege to have the opportunity to teach in A.C.C. all these years for which I am most grateful.

The following was written by Mary Jane Arledge Murray:
MARY GLADYS ARLEDGE
Mary Gladys Arledge, b. March 16, 1899, Bonham, TX, daughter of James Shaffer and Martha Ann Thornton Arledge. She was taught at home with Lylian and Thornton by their mother, and then at Maryneal in the one-room school house. Her family called her "Jim", after her father, because she was a tomboy. In 1913 her family moved to Abilene, so that the children could get an education. She attended A.C.C. Academy, graduating in 1916. She received a B.A. degree from A.C.C. in 1921. She received a M.A. degree from Hardin Simmons University in 1934. She also attended summer sessions at the University of Colorado in 1922, Sul Ross State in 1929, and University of California in 1927. Gladys taught for sixteen years in rural Jones and Taylor counties, including Latin for one year at Abilene High School and two years at A.C.C. Academy. She was also librarian at the old A.C.C. campus. She retired to help her mother at home, but at the same time, tutored in Latin and edited the College Church bulletin and served on the church's benevolent committee. Gladys was also an excellent cook, her specialty being bread and rolls. She mad many sugar cookies to help spoil the nieces and nephews. I remember her reading to me and playing games. Lylian was the great story-teller. Gladys and Lylian belonged to a group of friends who called themselves the "Old Maid's Club", though they admitted some widows. They had informal get-togethers from time to time. They met for luncheons and quilting. Gladys developed Parkinson's disease, fell and injured her back, so needed nursing care. After Lylian died in 1976, she moved to Houston's Christian home where Margaret could oversee her care. When Margaret and Artemas moved to Abilene in 1980, she was placed in a care facility there, where she died on January 13, 1982. She is buried in Masonic Cemetery in Abilene. In the summer of 1966 Gladys and Lylian came to visit us, and I took them and the children, David and Susan, on a camping trip at Lake Roberts in the Gila forest of New Mexico. They enjoyed it like a couple of kids, washing in the stream, chopping wood, and cooking over the campfire. They both liked to swim and were noted for their vintage (1920-30's) bathing suits, which covered them well. It never bothered them that they were outstandingly out of style, although frequently the younger members of the family were embarrassed to be seen with them. Gladys was a sweet-natured person, who truly was the servant Christ wants all of us to be.

Thomas Em Arledge went to Nolan County and bought six and a quarter sections from his father. In 1913, he moved with his family to the ranch on Eagle Creek in southern Nolan County. Zell, Roy and Emily rode on a passenger train. Em and his son, Henry, came with the sheep and cattle on an immigrant car, four carloads in all on a freight train from Bonham to Maryneal on the Orient Railroad. He bought mixed cattle and two bulls, a Hereford and a Shorthorn. Em Arledge was one of the first cattlemen to add sheep to his range. Each night the sheep had to be penned in the big barn because of coyotes. Sheepherders were with the sheep all the time, a job enjoyed by the boys during the summer. In 1918, a Canadian oil company leased all of the Arledge land. The well was drilled to 3200 feet and the well was plugged. Em and family moved from Eagle Creek to Maryneal in 1915, and to Roscoe in 1922. Em died July 5, 1939, and is buried in the Roscoe Cemetery. Zella moved to Sweetwater. She died in 1964 and is buried in the Roscoe Cemetery. ("Gray, Powers, and Interrelated Families", Ames, 1992, p. 103)
From "First 100 Years--Nolan County, TX" (Nolan County Historical Society):
T.E. (EM) ARLEDGE
Em Arledge came to Nolan County in 1912 to look at the country and while here bought six and a quarter sections from his father, George W. Arledge. In 1913 he moved his wife, Zella Pope, and children, Henry, Roy and Emily, to the ranch on Eagle Creek. Mrs. Arledge and two children, Roy and Emily, came on a passenger train, while Henry and Mr. Arledge came with the sheep and cattle on an immigrant car, four car loads in all, on a freight train from Bonham to Maryneal on the Orient Railroad. Henry and Roy attended Wilson Creek School in 1913-1914. Em Arledge was one of the first cattlemen in this county to add sheep to his range. He had blackfaced ewes and lamsbs. Each night the sheep had to be penned in the big barn because of coyotes. He hired sheepherders to be with the sheep all of the time but each summer, when his boys, Henry and Roy, were not in school, they took over the job. In 1914 during World War I Henry (13 years old) and Roy (ll years old) stayed with the sheep until school started in September. The boys had a chuck wagon with a wagon sheet and a chuck box. They cooked on an open fire with a skillet and dutch oven. Henry and Roy didn't see anyone all summer except their father and uncles who came to check on them each week. By 1926 Em had the entire ranch fenced with sheep proof fencing. An oil company from Canada came to Em Arledge in 1918 and leased all of the Arledge land (Harve, Joe and Em's), 25,000 acres, for oil. A well was drilled by Allen & Chaffin of Wichita Falls in 1919 on the Em Arledge rach. The well was drilled to 3200 feet, taking almost eight months to drill, and the well was plugged. When Em Arledge moved to Nolan County in 1913, he brought mixed cattle and two bulls, one a Hereford and one a Shorthorn. Em went into the registered Hereford business in 1925. He bought heifers and cows from Charlie Lewis and Walter Booth of Sweetwater and John Gist of Hereford, to start his registered herd. Em Arledge and family moved from Eagle Creek to Maryneal in 1915, and a daughter, Mary Virginia, was born there in 1920. The Arledges moved to Roscoe in 1922, and a son, Billy, was born there. Mr. Arledge passed away in 1939, and Mrs. Arledge moved to Sweetwater to 907 Josephine in 1944 and lived there until her death in 1964. Mr. and Mrs. T.E. Arledge are both buried in the Roscoe Cemetery. The ranch in Nolan Couty is still owned by Mr. and Mrs. T.E. Arledge's children; heirs of Henry Arledge of Seymour, Roy Arledge of Stamford, heirs of Emily Arledge Bridgford and Mary Virginia Bast of Sweetwater. The land is operated as a cattle and sheep ranch by Bud Bast of Sweetwater.
