and Northumberland County, Virginia
PART I
The following report was generated from Family Tree Maker 4.0 software. It includes all of my notes and documentation for 3 generations down from the first Clement. Because of size, it is divided into two separate files. To reach Part II (which starts with 6. WILLIAM ALDRIDGE/ARLEDGE), click HERE or on the button at the end of this file.
From the research files of Pam Wilson. These are my research notes and do not represent any conclusions in final form. Created January 1999; updated July 2006.
Descendants of Clement Aldridge
Generation No. 1
1. CLEMENT2 ALDRIDGE (JOHN ALDRICH1) was born 1601 in Worstead, Norfolk, England, anddied Abt. 1668 in Northumberland Co, VA. He married SUSAN CROMPTON (who was previously married to Edmund Boswell in 1612 and then widowed)July 02, 1626 in Worstead, Norfolk, England (could be July 12, 1626).
Notes for CLEMENT ALDRIDGE:
Clement Aldrich/Aldridge and Susan Crompton Boswell were apparently immigrants to Northumberland Co, Virginia. However, I have not yet found any record of their immigration in the form of ship lists or of patents given for their transport.
The Northumberland County Record Book 1666-1670 (p 100) includes a grant from Sir WILLIAM BERKELEY unto ABRAHAM JOYCE and RICH: THOMPSON of 200 acres of land in ye county of Northumberland, bounding upon the land of THOM. ADAMS and PHIL: CARPENTER & upon ye land of HEN: ROACH and upon ye land of GEO: COURTNEY & WALTER WEEKES, beginning at a marked corner red Oake and running southerly 320 pole and westerly 100 pole, Northerly 320 pole and Easterly to ye place where it firtst began; ye sd land being due to sd JOYCE & THOMPSON by & for ye transportacon of fower (4) persons into this colony whose names are on ye records menconed underneath this patent...the 7th day of March 1666. WILLIAM BERKELEY
Know all men by these presents yt I ABRAHAM JOYCE doe assigne all my right & interest of ye withing mentioned patent to CLEMENT ALDERIDGE his heirs and assignes for ever. Wit: JOHN ROBERTS, RICH: ROBERTS, sign ABRAHAM JOYCE. Recognized and recorded 20th 9ber 1666.
This raises many questions--who were the 4 persons Joyce transported--did they include Clement and Susan? And why did he deed his patent over to Clement?
There is also confusion in the Northumberland Co, VA records about *which* Clement was involved in certain transactions, since there were several generations of Clement Aldridge/Arledges.
The following is excerpted from an email to Clay Fulcher from Carolyn Jett, on January 13, 1997: "Clement Aldridge/Arledge was in Northumberland by 2 Apr. 1667, which was when he witnessed the will of the Reverend David Lyndsay. He was a neighbor of Lyndsay, whose gravestone (or half of it) is still there. That gives us the general location of Aldridge/Arledge's land, in the area known as Cherry Point Neck. On 20 9ber [November] of probably 1666 or 1667, Clement purchased 100 acres of land. Nearby was another tract of 100 acres belonging to Cloud [Claudius] Tullos. It is possible that this Clement Aldridge was the same man who married Elizabeth Tilles at Worstead, Norfolk, England in 1668. If so, he must have returned to England to marry her, for he was here before that date."
The will in question is that of DAVID LYNDSAY, Minister of God, who bequeathed his estate to his daughter HELEN LYNDSAY, who he also named his Executrix. Will written 2 April 1667, Signed in presence of JAMES CLAYTON, ye mrke of CLE:MT ARLIDGE and GEORGE DEACON. Proved 8 April 1667 by ye oathes of JAMES CLAUGHTIN & CLEM: ARLIDGE. Northumberland County Court Records.
It is most likely that these early records were for the elder Clement.

Notes for SUSAN CROMPTON BOSWELL:
Teri Allred [in her Winter 1994 "Aldridge and Allred of the South" newsletter] cites a letter written by Sylvia M. Allred of W. Jordan, Utah, to John Lisk in 1976:
"In her second letter, she is discussing Susan BOSWELL who married Clement ALDRED/ALDRIDGE 2 Jul 1626. She states that after Susan Boswell's name in the marriage record to Clement, it definitely states "widow." On 24 june 1612, an Edmond BOSWELL married Susan CROMPTON. If that is the case and this is confirmed, the maiden name of Clement ALDRIDGE's wife would be CROMPTON instead of Boswell."
Children of CLEMENT ALDRIDGE and SUSAN CROMPTON BOSWELL are:
ii. ELIZABETH ALDRIDGE, b. April 08, 1627, Worstead, Norfolk, England.
iii. JOHN ALDRIDGE, b. February 08, 1628/29.
Notes for JOHN ALDRIDGE:
One source has his date of death as April 16, 1720. I'm not sure what the source of this date is. This John's nephew, son of Clement, is also listed as having died on this date.
iv. MARY ALDRIDGE, b. April 17, 1631, Worstead, Norfolk, England.
v. ALICE/ALISE ALDRIDGE, b. September 01, 1633, [christened] Worstead, Norfolk, England (Source: LDS IGI.); m. SAMUEL PYCROFT, May 12, 1673, Worstead, Norfolk, England.
vi. WILLIAM ALDRIDGE, b. September 25, 1635, Worstead, Norfolk, England; d. 1665, Northumberland Co VA.
Notes for WILLIAM ALDRIDGE:
There is evidence of TWO William Aldridges in Northumberland County in the 1660s, and it is not clear which one might have been the son of Clement and Susan. Neither had any legal interactions with Clement or with each other, and all three appear to have come to the area separately.
WILLIAM ALDRIDGE is listed among 22 people in the Northumberland County Order Book, 1652-1665 [p.69 of Sparacio Abstracts--need to get earlier page to find out what the issue was].
"Alderidge, William. Died from accidental gun shot. Jury of inquest called. He exonerated all persons before his death. 17 Nov 1662. 15. 84" [Beverly Fleet, Virginia Colonial Abstracts, Vol. XIX, Northumbria Collectanea, 1645-1720 (Balt: GPC, 1971]
There is a lengthy hearing recorded in the Northumberland County Record Book 1658-1662 (p. 85) : Mr. PETER ASHTON his Warrt for the acquiring of the Estate of WM. ALDERIDGE...who was lately wounded with the shott of a gunn & dyed thereupon." A Jury of Inquest of "Twelve Discreet men" was impaneled to view the corpse and inquire as to the cause of death. Dated 19 9ber 1662... This is a fascinating and lengthy account, but the most intriguing information if the description of "The examination of WM ALDERIDGE, Mercht, of the Katch "Martey" of ROADE ISLAND now ridinge in Greate Wicocomico River taken before us PETER ASHTON and WILLIAM NUTT, Gent., two of his Maties Justices of the Peace of Northumberland County" and the description of the man who did the shooting, SAMUEL LEGG, , as "Master Katch" and the "good friend" of William Alderidge... Sworn before DANIELL NEALE, PETER ASHTON & WILLIAM NUTT. (apparently the original copy is badly damaged since many words or missing or illegible). [from Ruth and Sam Aparacio's Deed and Will Abstracts of Northumberland County, VA, 1658-1662 (The Antient Press, nd) pp. 188ff.
*However*, there is ALSO a William ALDRIGE who immigrated to Westmoreland County, VA before 1665, per a patent grant to Col. Peter Ashton for 500 acres in Westmoreland Co, 12 Oct 1665, p. 421, for the transport of 10 persons, including Wm. Aldrige. [Nell Marion Nugent, Cavaliers and Pioneers: Abstracts of Virginia Land Patents and Grants, 1623-1800, Vol. 1 p. 531 (Richmond: Dietz Printing, 1934).
Is this the same WIlliam or another? Could THIS be Clement's son William, rather than the William who died in 1662?
Then, after the death of the first William, a WILLIAM ALDRIDGE witnessed the sale of 483 acres of land from PETER ASHTON to JNO COCKERALL on the Great Wicocomicoe River, dated 27 August 1668 and witnessed by HEN: HUDSON and WM: ALDRIDGE; recorded 20th 9ber 1668.

Apparently one of the WILLIAM ALDRIDGEs (the one who was the son of Clement and brother of GEORGE) went to Talbot CO, MD, according to the book "Colonial Families of the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Volume 3," by Robert W. Barnes & F. Edward Wright, which discusses the Aldridge Family of Talbot Co, MD, and says that GEORGE and WILLIAM ALDRIDGE were brothers:
1. (N) Aldridge, left at least two sons: William and George
2. George Aldridge, son of (N) (1), bro. of William, d. by Feb 1676/7. He m. Anne (N), who m. 2nd, John Mitchell. At some time, see seems to have had a son whose surname was Bullpit.
George Aldrigg of TA Co. d. leaving a will dated 1 Oct 1673 and proved 16 Dec 1679 (after his wife had already remarried). Named were wife Anne, extx., to whom he devised 350 a.; two sons, Benjamin and George were to have the plant, when wife died. Other children named were George, Thomas, Mary and John. Son John was to remain with his mother until 21 yrs. of age. Dau. Grace was devised 250 a., Old Mill. The will was witnessed by Philip Stevenson, Edward Stevens, and Jonas Davis. {MWB 10:73}
vii. THOMAS ALDRIDGE, b. 1637.
Notes for THOMAS ALDRIDGE:
A Thomas Aldridge was on a list of English immigrants to Virginia transported by William Lunsford, Esq. for which Lunsford received land on the Rappahannock in a grant dated 24 Oct 1650. Was this the same Thomas Aldridge, or an older Thomas?
3. viii. GEORGE ALDRIDGE, b. 1639, Worstead, Norfolk, England [source of date??]; migrated to Northumberland Co, VA; d. Bef. February 1676/77, Talbot Co, MD [will dated 1 Oct 1673, proved December 16, 1679].
ix. MARY ALDRIDGE, b. July 24, 1640, [or chirstened 24 Jul 1640] Worstead, Norfolk, England (Source: LDS IGI.).
Generation No. 2
2. CLEMENT3 ALDRIDGE (CLEMENT2, JOHN ALDRICH/1) was born September 25, 1636 in [or christened 25 Sept 1635] Worstead, Norfolk, England (Source: LDS IGI.), and died January 19, 1698/99 in Northumberland Co, VA. He married (1) ALICE ??? Bef. 1668. He married (2) ELIZABETH TILLES/ TILLS October 18, 1668 in Worstead, Norfolk, England (Source: Boyd's Marriage Index; Franklin Aldridge Records), daughter of WILLIAM TILLS and MARY ???.
Notes for CLEMENT ALDRIDGE:
Clement and Elizabeth were immigrants to Virginia. His parents, Clement and Susan, may have preceded them. Sekanick speculates that, since Clement (Sr) died in 1668, Clement (Jr) may have come to America to claim an inheritance. A Clement Aldridge first appears in records of Northumberland Co, VA in 1666. However, Clement and Elizabeth's two children were christened in Worstead, Norfolk, England, in 1669 and 1670.
Lived in Bowtracy and Fairfield Parishes north of the Wicomico River (in 1698 these parishes merged to form St. Stephen's Parish, the records of which are in the State Library of VA).
children: see remnants of Northumb. Co Births and Deaths, 1650-1810, p.3 [Names are illegible; clarified in Franklin Aldridge and Alice Sekanick books, but don't know their source].
Many, many references to Clement and Elizabeth in Northumberland Co. Order Book. Many lawsuits over tobacco. Occasionally the spelling Arledge or Aldredge appears instead of Aldridge. See F.R. Aldridge's "Aldridge Records, Vol. II" for a thorough listing.
Northumberland County Court 21 Aug 1672 (Book of Orders p. 156): "Whereas an attachment was awarded to Mr. THO" MATHEW agt ye Estate of STEPHEN BYLAND for five hundred & fowreteene (514) pounds of tobacco and caske, wch Attahcment is returned executed on soe much in ye hands of CLEMT: ALRIDGE: Judgement is granted ye sd MATHEW agt ye sd ALRIDGE for ye sd summme with costs. [Ruth and Sam Sparacio, Order Book Abstracts]
Death dates in some sources given as 19 Jan 1698/9. This conflicts with Franklin Aldridge's claim that he remarried in 1701 to Mary Donaldson, for whom documentation exists. Further evidence leads to conclude that it was his SON Clement who married Mary Donaldson. Others say it is unclear whether Clement died in Northumberland County VA where he lived or died in England where he was born. However, there are references to Clement's will being proved in Nortumberland County on 19 Jan 1699; one of the witnesses was Mary Tullos [reference: NEED TO FIND: O.D. Lindsay, Virginia Colonial Abstracts, Vol. 1, p. 52; cited in article on Rodham family in Northumberland Historical Society Bulletin, XII, 1975.]
21 Aug 1678: Graves Garrett son of Thomas Garrett, dec'd, bound to Clement Aldridge [Northumberland County Court Orders p.1].
17 Aug 1681: William Leach, orphan and noe Estate, bound to Clement Aldridge [Northumberland County Court Orders, p.99].
Clement was a joiner by trade and, in 1678, took Graves Garratt as an apprentice. In November, 1674, Clement and Thomas Flynt were requested by the court to inspect a building for its worthiness, and on November 19, 1679, he was paid for mending the parish church.
On June 7, 1679 the Court of Northumberland ordered the list of tithables divided into forties; each group of forty was ordered to deliver an able man along with a horse, arms and other provisions to the house of Thomas Mathew. Clement was one of the men charged with the responsibility of insuring that this order was carried out (Co. Court Note Bk. IX:16, 26).
15 Nov 1693: CLEMENT ALDRIDGE and ELIZABETH his wife vs. WILLIAM BEANE, nonsuit, and C. and ELiz. to pay damages [Northumberland County Court Orders, p.632]
On May 16, 1694, Clement was appointed constable for Cherry Point Neck, one of six constables appointed for the county [Northumberland County Court Orders, p. 652].
16 Oct 1695: CLEMENT ALDRIDGE was one of witnesses (along with CAPT. RODHAM KENNER and Mr. THOMAS BUSHROD) to probate the will of Mr. CHRISTOPHER NEALE, as petitioned by HANNAH NEALE, Executrix. [Northumberland County Court Orders, p. 711]
17 Mar 1797: ELIZABETH ALDRIDGE wife of CLEMENT ALDRIDGE, JUNR, relinquishes her rights of dower to 64 acres of land sold to THO.MILLER. SHe also relinquishes dower in the sale of 60 acres to JOHN CRALLE. [Northumberland County Court Orders, p. 759]
19 Jan 1698/9: Motion of ELIZABETH ALDRIDGE, Exx. a Probate to her of the Last Will of CLEM'T ALDRIDGE, proved by DAVID STRAUGHAN and MARY TULLOS. [Northumberland County Court Orders, p. 759] Clement's will was presented to court on January 19, 1698-99. Unfortunately, this will was destroyed in a courthouse fire.
[21 Sept 1699: Motion of CLEM'T ARLEGE, probate to him of the last will of ELIZ. ARLEGE his wife, proved by Edw'd Barnes and Hugh Staten. [Northumberland County, VA, Court Orders, p. 66] . This is most likely a reference to the next-generation CLEMENT, who also had a wife Elizabeth.]
There are many references to land bought FROM Clement Aldridge/Arledge. For example, the 1726 will of JOHN CRALLE, SR. of St. Stephen's Parish (written 1 Oct 1726, proven 16 Apr 1728) , aside from stating his desire "not to have any funeral sermon, and that there be no superfluity of drink disposed of at my funeral", left his son John Cralle sixty acres of land in "Cherry Point" WHICH I BOUGHT OF CLEMENT ABRIDGE, JUNR. [Northumberland Co. Record Book, 1726-1729, p. 97]
The following is excerpted from an email to Clay Fulcher from Carolyn Jett, on January 13, 1997, with my notes in brackets: "Clement Aldridge/Arledge was in Northumberland by 2 Apr. If so, he must have returned to England to marry her, for he was here before that date. At any rate, the wife of Clement of Northumberland was Elizabeth. Many researchers think that he was the Clement Aldridge who was christened on 25 Sep. 1636 in Worstead, son of Clement and Susan Boswell Aldridge. Clement Aldridge/Arledge was a master joiner [carpenter]. There are several records proving this in Northumberland records [WHERE?? WHICH ONES??]. Clement Aldridge died in 1698/9 in Northumberland. He left six children [WHAT IS THE SOURCE OF THIS INFORMATION?], who were
1. Clement Aldridge, Jr., d. 1705/6, m. (1) Elizabeth and (2) Mary. He left a daughter, Elizabeth, who was 12 years old by 1710. [SOURCE??]
2. daughter - no further info.
3. daughter - no further info.
4. William Arledge - d. 1724/5, m. (1) Alice and (2) Sarah. See below.
5. Isaac Aldridge
6. John Aldridge."
Northumberland County Record Books 1743-1749 (p.166) show a will of Richard CRUTE dated 11 August 1746 (proved 8 Dec 1746) who said he desired that his son Richard "might be bound to SAMUEL ALDREDGE to learn the joyners trade." Who is this SAMUEL ALDREDGE??

Notes for ELIZABETH TILLES/ TILLS:
Elizabeth Tills/Tilles was descended from a family which had long resided in Norfolk, England. The earliest record of someone by this name in Norwich is the 1374 will of William Tillis. Other members of this family also immigrated to America and are mentioned in Northumberland County records in conjunction with the Aldridge/Arledge family. (Sekanick, 1994, p. 60)
Some sources have her date of death as 6 Dec 1684.
The following is a Northumberland County VA court record sent to Clay Fulcher from Patricia Daniels, Jan 26, 1997:

I entered her in my files as Mary Jane Arledge. (All I have on the early
Arledge family came from Boddie's Historical Southern Families, V. 10.
Sometimes there are errors in Boddie, but I've not looked elsewhere for
more information since finding this article. Do you know of other early
family histories, or is your information also based on Boddie? If you disagree
about Mary Arledge being Jane, would love to know more. This isn't my research
and I have no strong feelings about the matter.)

From: Bbaughn Pam,
I have enjoyed your web page on the Arledge family. My possible connection
is thru Clement Ardridge and Mary Tilles' daughter, Mary Jane. My line
is:
Brent Baughn < Bbaughn@aol.com >
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
The latest on the subject casts doubt that any of these were children
of Jane Arledge.

Hi Pam,
I won't try to get into a lot of detail, however, I now believe that
the Henry Harding lines that have been thrown around for so many years
are incorrect, including much of what you have in your chart. In late June
I decided that there were so many contradictions in the Harding lines that
I needed to see just what could be proven and what could not be proven
and was I surprised. It's taken about two months to copy out all the Harding
references in Northumberland County, VA and in other Northern Neck counties
up to Loudoun, resulting in hundreds of entries and about 75 pages of material.
That said, here are my new comments on your chart:
1. Henry Harding and Jane Arledge have no provable children. All sources
list four children, Henry, John, Thomas, and William. This is from a speculative
comment in an article written by Mrs. Keach in the 1920's in Tylers Quarter,
which is the basis for the structure of the family as currently accepted.
2. Henry Harding who married Jane Arledge was still under 21 in August
1691 per court records. He most likely married within the next year or
two. He died in August 1697 when his wife filed for probate, not May 1698.
Jane is the only name Jane Arledge is known under in the records.
3. Henry Harding II, supposed son of Henry Harding and Jane Arledge,
was married by early 1708 in Northumberland Co., VA, proven by a court
record where Henry and Anne, widow of William Beltcher Jr, probate his
estate, not 1714-15. If Henry II was the son of Henry and Jane, he would
have been 14-15 years old at marriage. Not likely.
4. Henry and Jane's other listed sons are figments of the imagination.
Thomas does not exist and was never assigned a family by any researcher.
John is most likly the son of William Harding, Henry's bro ther, proven
by a Westmoreland Co. court order. William was invented and the dates of
his children were changed by 10 years from parish registers to make him
fit the family.
5. The only proven child of Henry Harding II is Henry III. All others
are speculation. Charles belongs in neither position that you have him
in. If you look carefully you will note you have him twice, under Henry
and under William, both times married to Rachel Lunsford. William may belong
in this family but there is nothing to connect him. George may belong here
too but there is no proof.
I need to e-mail Sue Harris and Brent Baughn with the results of my
research since it is such a radical change. Ironically, I keep coming back
to my original idea of Brent's ancestry, which also mine, the more I research,
and not the line he sent you, which is now clearly incorrect.
NOTE from PW: As a result, I've removed these descendants from my chart,
trusting Lee Pound's expertise.

Hi Pam,
I just looked through your Arledge page and found one of my letters
on the subject of the descendants of Henry Harding and Jane Arledge. First,
I appreciate you including the material since it does make quite a difference
for Harding descendants.
I did end up publishing my Harding findings last September, including
all of the Northumberland references. Interestingly enough, I found no
proof that Jane, the wife of Henry Harding was an Arledge or had any connection
with Clement Arledge.
Anyway the book is available should you wish to have a copy. To order,
send $20 to me at 4 Ash Tree Lane, Irvine, CA 92612.
Again, I appreciate your getting the word out about the Harding problems.

I checked Allred Family in America by Dr. Rulon C. Allred and found
[page I-74, in the section written by Archibald F. Bennett] the following
information about this Clement:
Clement's wife, Elizabeth [now we know it was Elizabeth Bean], died
about 1699. Clement then married Mary [who had previously married John
Donaldson and then Dennis Eyes prior to her marriage to Clement Aldridge,
Jr. Then after her 3rd husband, Clement, died, she married Jonathan Palfrey,
as her 4th husband].
Among the appraisers of the estate of Clement Aldridge/Arledge were
John Laurence. Clement's will was destroyed in a fire. He has no known
children. Had his will survived, we would have known one way or another,
but it seems really strange that with two wives, he had no children. We
may never know (with a miracle, of course). We now know that Clement Aldridge/Arledge's
first wife was Elizabeth Bean, the daughter of William Bean and Elizabeth
Symmons. Elizabeth Symmons was the sister of Colonel John Symmons whose
widow, Susannah, married John Lawrence.
Now, if that isn't confusing enough....
John Allred left a will in 1792 in Randolph County, North Carolina.
Among his heirs was a daughter, Elizabeth Horner, wife of William Horner.
Three of their children married Russells. Among some documents discovered
by the late Brenda Esslinger of Knoxville, TN, a descendant of Elizabeth
Allred and William Horner are: DAR Membership application of Helen Young
Bishop; Horner Legacy by Fredalene Horner; Russell Vertical File &
Bean Vertical File, McClung Library, Knoxville, TN. The Allen Papers at
the McClung Library has the following on the Bean line:
Matthew Bains married Margaret Hatton at Lancaster Monthly Meeting in
England. They sailed for America in 1687 on the ship Chester. Matthew,
Margaret and two of their children (Thomas and Timothy) died at sea. Their
surviving children, William and Eleanor, wanted to stay in America. William's
children were: Joseph, Matthew, James, Timothy, Thomas (infant who died),
William, Jacob, Elizabeth and Eleanor. They were all born in the early
1700s.
The International Genealogical Index (IGI) shows William and Elizabeth
Bean in Northumberland County, Virginia, the ancestor of the Beans who
married into the Russell family and then three times into the family of
Elizabeth Allred and William Horner. So far this is probably not too clear,
but I'll try to clarify, but the this line migrates from Northumberland
County, Virginia, to Pittsylvania and Halifax Counties, Virginia, and to
North Carolina. This BEAN-RUSSELL group/family was involved in the Watauga
Association. William Russell and Elizabeth Bean had three children who
married children of William Horner and Elizabeth Allred: Elizabeth Russell
who married to John Horner, Jr.; Jemima Russell who married George Horner
(this family went to Hickman and later Perry County, TN); Lewis R. Russell
who married Elizabeth Horner (migrated to Arkansas). The wife, Elizabeth
Bean, of William Russell, was the sister of Captain William Bean (who married
George Russell's sister, Lydia). This Elizabeth Bean and William Bean were
the children of William Bean who was born 1720, Northumberland County,
Virginia.
There is also a connection to the Cloud and Lane families. Briefly,
William Cloud married Sarah James. Their children were: Robert, John, Joseph
(to follow), Jeremiah and Willliam. Joseph Cloud married Sarah Green (widow
Moore). Their children were: Isaac (to follow), Joseph, Mary and Ann. Isaac
Cloud's wife is not known. Their daughter, Elizabeth, married John Fuller
Lane. John Fuller Lane and Elizabeth Cloud had the following children:
1) Dorcas Lane, md. Thomas Gresham & then Nathaniel Davis. 2) Sarah
Lane, md. Zachariah McCubbins 3) Jemima Lane, md. John Ellis, Sr. 4) Isaac
Lane, md. Sarah Russell ***** 5) Tidence Lane, md. Ann Bean ***** 6) John
Dutton Lane 7) Rhoda Lane, md. Mr. Curry 8) Elizabeth Lane, md. Benjamin
Shipley 9) Samuel Lane, md. Elizabeth Hunt 10) a daughter who md. Thomas
Cunningham. After John Fuller Lane, Elizabeth Cloud Lane married 2) John
Crouch. The Cloud/Lane/Bean research was done by Brenda Esslinger prior
to 1994.
The point: there is a connection between the daughter of John Allred
(Elizabeth, wife of William Horner) and families from Northumberland County,
Virginia. I am sure there is much more to be done. I am not trying to say
that John Aldridge/Arledge was the ancestor of the Allreds of Orange and
Randolph Counties, North Carolina, because I don't think this is the case;
however, I still believe the Allreds of NC are related or descendants of
the Northumberland family of Aldridge/Arledge, especially since a Henry
Alred appeared there in 1694 as assignee of William Dickinson by his attorney,
Richard Haynie [Thomas Hobson and Some of His Descendants, Tyler's Quarterly
Historical and Genealogical Magazine, Vol. VIII, Richmond Press, Inc. Printers,
Richmond, VA, 1927, pp. 128-129].
Comments, futher information welcomed.

The Harding connections were by correspondance with Lee Pound. He did this
thru deeds, wills and court records. He has Henry Harding md. to Jane Arledge.
Maybe this is your Mary Jane. Henry Harding (1666-1698) is the son of Thomas
Harden and Anne Mosley. He is the immigrant ancestor. The Hardings are
from London, ENG. and the early family is in Tyler's Quarterly Magazine
"Hardings of London and Virginia" by Mrs. O. A. Keach.
