He died 25 Dec 1919 and is buried at Silver Creek Baptist Church, Polk Co, NC.

 

He married ELIZABETH HOLBERT 28 Jan 1855 in Henderson Co, NC by Green Berry Arledge, JP (his brother). She was one of three daughters of BENJAMIN HOLBERT and CHARITY STOVER to marry Arledge brothers. She was born 16 Apr 1837 in Holbert's Cove, Rutherford (now Polk) Co, NC, and died 21 Sep 1916 in Mill Spring (Bur. Silver Creek Baptist Church), Polk Co, NC.

Sue Johnson writes: "My own Arledge great-grandma, Julia, daughter of Clem, was unique. She certainly was no shrinking violet. She was a midwife, who went back to school for further medical training after she raised her family. She delivered over 100 children (only lost one). She had over 70 descendants at her funeral. She died at Mom's home. As a little girl, I used to like to look in her black medical bag."

Friendship Church, Saluda, Polk Co, NC). She married JOHN S. JOHNSON 12 Mar 1893 in Polk County, NC, son of LEONARD JOHNSON and MARY DALTON. He was born 04 Jan 1854 in Saluda, Rutherford/Polk Co, NC s/o Leonard D. & Mary Matilda Dalton Johnson, and died 17 Jun 1937 in Horse Shoe, Henderson Co, NC (Bur. Friendship Church, Saluda, Polk Co, NC).

 

 

Notes for JOHN S. JOHNSON:

He was raised largely by his grandparents. His father, Leonard, was in poor health and also traveled to find work as a brick mason. John appears in the 1850 - 1870 censuses in the home of Elijah DALTON, with his mother and sisters present in some years. The home was in present-day Polk County near Howard Gap Road in the earlier years, and perhaps Warrior Road later on. The Warrior Road property is probably where his first cousin, Leonard Douglas JOHNSON, later operated a dairy -- the 73 acres referred to in deeds as "the place where Elijah DALTON lives." That land passed through the hands of many in the LANKFORD, DALTON, HENDERSON and JOHNSON families. He had acquired his own farmland by the time he married Evelyn STATON. His first few land acquisitions were on Cove Creek and Capps Creek. Part of the land was in Polk and part in Henderson Counties. At various times he owned land on Little Cove Creek, Green Creek, and Saluda Township totalling several hundreds of acres. He also owned lots in Saluda and Hendersonville. In 1890 he was a trustee acquiring land for a new Babtist church in Saluda. After the death of his first wife, Evelyn, his sister-in-law, Viola TORRENCE STATON, wife of "U. G." (Ulysses Grant STATON) helped take care of his children for about a year. He then married Clementine ARLEDGE of Mill Spring. They lived on the same farm, but in 1900 he bought a large farm on Shaw's Creek at Horse Shoe, five miles west of Hendersonville. They moved there in 1904 and lived there until they died. At one time he was a director of a Hendersonville bank, which went under. He felt obligated to help the depositors, and gave generously of his own money to help them recover their losses.

It is said that he was named for his father's friend, Dr. E. B. GOELET, the first doctor in Saluda, NC. However, he spelled his name in the manner of the famous actor, William Gillette, who occasionally summered in Saluda. The Johnson Bible gives his name as "C. G." His sister, Ola, gave his name as Goelet Silas in her will. He served under Eddie RICKENBACKER in World War I and was a member of Rickenbacker's Flying Circus before joining his brother, Tom, in the real estate business in Florida.

Homer A. Shields

Homer Arledge Shields, 84, of Tryon, died June 21, 2004, in St. Luke’s Hospital, Columbus.

 

A native of Tryon, he was the son of the late Devaney A. and Blandia Arledge Shields.

 

He was a veteran of WWII, having served in the 782nd EPD Company in the 6th U.S. Army. Mr. Shields was the former owner of Shields Plumbing Company and also served on the Tryon Police Department for five years. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Jeff Nelson Masonic Lodge #605, Tryon. Mr. Shields was a member of the Tryon United Methodist Church.

 

Survivors include his wife, Alma Williams Shields of the home; two stepsons, Don Pack of Greenville, S.C. and Doug Pack of Spartanburg; five step-grandchildren, John Pack of Corpus Christi, Texas, Devon Swale of Greenville, S.C., Glenn Pack of Wilmington, Bryan Pack and Cindy Pack both of Spartanburg; three sisters, Margaret Daigle of Maine, Barbara Gowan of Morganton, and Allen Durham of Tryon. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Dean Shields, John Lewis Shields and William Shields and one sister, Marian Thompson.

 

Graveside services will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, June 23, in Polk Memorial Gardens in Columbus, with the Rev. Brian Allen officiating.

 

The family will be at the home.
