CENSUS
RECORDS
In the 1790
The 1800
Edgefield Co, SC census (96 District) lists ISHAM ALDRIDGE (30010-1001000) and
JOHN ALDRIDGE (21001-0210104) as living in the same district (on the same page
187). JOHN had 2 males 10-16, one 16-26 and one over 45, and 2 females under
10, 1 10-16 and one over 45 and 4 slaves. ISHAM was a younger family, with one
male and female each 26-45 and one boy and 3 girls under age 10. Is this Isham
the oldest son of John and Anna? It would make sense since he seems to have
lost one older son between the 1790 and 1800 censuses.
1800
SC/Edgefield Co:
#187 Isham ALDRIDGE 10010-30010-00

born 1784-1790. Daughters: one born 1784-1790, and 2 born 1790-1800.
However, the
1800 census for Abbeville County section of 96 District lists a JOHN ALDRIDGE
and a NATHANIEL ALDRIDGE (a Nathaniel was also listed in 1800 in Abbeville).
The 1810
Edgefield County census has an interesting twist--it lists:
ALDREDGE,
JOHN Jr. 031 (one of these should be "Sr")
ARLDREDGE,
JOHN Jr. 031
ARLDRIDGE,
ISAAC 035
John and
Isaac are evidently two of the sons of John.

14 June
1792. Edgefield Co, SC Deed Book 7, P. 80-85, Indenture between John and Ann
ARLEDGE of Edgefield County, Ninety Six District, to David Baker Chandler,
minor son of Joel Chandler, planter of the Creek County District of SC: 519
acres on Turkey Creek, for 10 shillings Sterling, 364 acres of which are part
of tract granted to Richard Johnston in 1786 and conveyed to Arledge on 6-7
August 1788 (Book B, p. 25 or 35); another 155 acre grant to John Arledge 3 October 1791 by Gov. Charles Pinckney of SC
recorded in Secy's Office in grant book No. 5 p. 557. Signed John Arledge, Ann
Arledge (their marks), witnessed by Joel Chandler, Jas. Scott and Patience
Arledge (her mark). There seem to be terms of a lease to Chandler for one
peppercorn rent. Sworn and recorded 20 Jun 1792, dower relinguished Nov term
1792.
NOTE: For a
number of reasons, I suspect that the above transaction may be a pre-marital
transaction conveying land to Chandler who was planning to marry Patience
Arledge. The selling price--10 shillings for 519 acres--seems extraordinarily
low, really a token. [In another deed a few years earlier, in 1788, there is a
sale of 60 acres for 100 pounds sterling, in contrast, to establish a relative
sense of real estate values). Also, it seems odd for a single woman to serve as
a witness, unless perhaps she is the fiancee of one party and the daughter of
the other? Thirdly, the minor status of Chandler and the fact that his father
is involved in this agreement would indicate that this is some transfer of
marital dowry.

Notes for
ESTHER ARLEDGE:
From Bob
Weeks raweeks@attglobal.net
It is not
untill 03 Dec 1816 that the first reference to EASTER/EASTHER/ESTHER WEAKES,
daughter of John & ANN Arledge, & her children is encountered!
In Jan of
1802, when she witnesed at the sale of land by John Arledge, she was given as
ESTHER ARLEDGE and John's wife, in the release of her dower rights, was given
as NANCY.
Aaron Weeks
Sr has been well know to the Arledges since not later than Aug of 1805. Aaron's
wife was named in formal records as NANCY in Mar of 1814 & again in Oct of
1816!
John &
Ann Arledge having to make provisions with Mark Mathis for the care of their
married daughter & her children implies that the husband was either
deceased or incompetent to support the family. It further implies that Easter -
Easther - Esther was incapable of supporting herself and her children AND that
John & Ann did not anticipate living long enough to provide long term care
for them.
From census
data, John Arledge Sr & his wife would have been born before 1755 so would
have been at least in their early 60's by 1816. If Esther Arledge Weeks were
the older female in John Arledge Sr's household on the 1800 census, born
1775-1784, she could have been no younger than 32 in 1816 and possibly as old
as 41.
On the 1810
census Aaron Weeks was born 1766-1784 & his wife 1785-1794. William Wicks
was also born 1766-1784 & his wife 1785-1794. The two Weeks males would
thus be between 32 to 50 and their wives between 12 to 31 in 1816. This and the
above data make them unlikely candidates as husband for Esther Arledge Weeks.

===============================================
However,
there were several other WEEKS males found in Edgefield Co SC who could have
been husband to Easter (etc) Arledge. Joshua, John, William (3) & James
were all named in census & lands records from the late 1780's to the
1820's. There may very likely have been others.
It is my
belief that John Arledge SR & Ann indeed had a daughter, Easter (or Easther
or Esther), who married one of the other Weeks males known to be in Edgefield
Co SC at the time. And that John Arledge JR was her brother, married to Nancy.
While
falling short of having proven these conjectures absolutely, I believe that the
prepondence of evidence presented above does strongly support that Aaron Weeks
Sr would appear to have been perhaps the least likely individual candidate for
the husband of Esther Arledge.

According to
Elzey Joe Arledge's trees, an ancestral Isaac Arledge was in SC, of English
descent (born c 1765-1775, by my calculations) who had 4 children: Bruce,
Betsy, Jack and Isaac D. Arledge.
This next
generation Isaac D. Arledge (born estim. 1790-1795) married English-born Rachel
Harrison, and gave birth to Betsy, Nancy, Sallie, Mary and Isaac D.
This *next*
generation Isaac D. Arledge was born 7 Nov 1819 in SC and moved to Paulding, MS
and then to Hattiesburg, where he died in 1910. He had 14 children, and his
descendants are documented by Elzey Joe Arledge, Jr. of Woodbridge, VA
(703-491-8280) or <arledgej@arngrc-emh2.army.mil>.
I think this
is the most likely point of connection for the Mississippi branch, although the
other unaccounted-for Isaac Arledge during the appropriate time period would be
the Fairfield Isaac Arledge (son of Isaac, who was son of Isaac bc 1747 and
Anna) who was born 1770-1785, married Lydia, and had children William, Isaac,
John, Austin, James, Charlotte, Eliza and Lydia. However, these names do not
connect at all to the children of Isaac listed by Elzey Joe Arledge.
On the other
hand, since the Edgefield Isaac was one of at least three children (Isaac, John
and Burrell) of John Arledge, it seems more likely that he would name his
children Jack (John), Elizabeth (Betsy), Bruce (could be some variant of
Burrell?) and Isaac.
Also, it is
likely that the "Jno. Arledge" (b. 1794) on Elzey Joe's tree could be
the same as "Jack" here, since both are forms of John, and the dates
of birth would be approximately the same.
from Elzey
Joe Arledge
Could this
be the Isaac ALDRIDGE listed in 1840 census in Wilcox Co, AL, along with a John
ALDRIDGE? If so, he is probably the husband of Rachel Harrington, who is buried
in Pineapple, Wilcox Co, AL.
Could he
have been the father of Jonathan, Martin and/or William?

On 01 Jan
1802 the sale of land by John Arledge was witnessed by Absolom Landrum and
ESTHER ARLEDGE. For the first time, John's wife was given as NANCY in the
release of her dower rights!
To have been
of legal age in 1802, Esther Arledge would have had to been born 1781 or
earlier. If you look back to the 1800 Edgefield Co census earlier, you will
find that the oldest male and female in John Arledge's household were both born
1755 or before. That one male was born 1775-1784, two males born 1785-1790, one
female born 1775-1784, two females born after 1790, no other free & four
slaves.
There are no
females of this age group in either John Sr or Jr's households in the 1810
census. The females in both the Aaron Weeks & William Wicks households in
this census are either born 1785-1794 or after 1800 so also do not fit this
individual..
On the 1810
census of Edgefield Co SC John Aldredge Sr & his wife appear to have been
born 1765 or before. The 1800 has them both before 1755. John Jr & his wife
appear on the 1810 to have been born born 1785-1794. Thus John Jr could have
been as old as 17 or 18 by 1802 and, perhaps, newly married.

It is not
untill 03 Dec 1816 that the first reference to EASTER/EASTHER/ESTHER WEAKES,
daughter of John & ANN Arledge, & her children is encountered!
In Jan of
1802, when she witnesed at the sale of land by John Arledge, she was given as
ESTHER ARLEDGE and John's wife, in the release of her dower rights, was given
as NANCY.

However,
there were several other WEEKS males found in Edgefield Co SC who could have
been husband to Easter (etc) Arledge.
Likewise, I
believe that the same data demonstrate that there is no compelling reason,
based on available documented information, to assume that the maiden name of
Nancy, wife of Aaron Weeks Sr, was, in fact, Arledge. Her lineage remains so
far undetermined, to the best of my knowledge.
Reliable
citations to data supporting the contrary would be most greatly appreciated!

This shows
Esther or Nancy Arledge b. bet. 1790-1795 and shows the daughter, Nancy, b.
1790. I wonder if Esther/Nancy Arledge
Weeks could have been born earlier than 1790?
I believe Nancy Weeks Walker was born about 1794 as she is living with
Allen Weeks on the 1860 census and lists her age as 66. Is the wife of Solomon the daughter of Aaron
and Esther/Nancy? Or did Esther/Nancy
marry a second time to Solomon
Walker? [Seems improbable based on the date of death
of Aaron Weeks.]
My
ancestress Margaret Walker Martin [d/o Solomon and Nancy Weeks Walker], was
born in June 1810 . . . her age is consistent with this birthdate throughout
the 1850, 60, 70 & 80 censuses.

pages that pertain to background and mail if you like. It is a good book,
written by Ruby WEEKS Priest and Hazel Weeks. There are some errors but that is
true of all genealogy books. impossible ,not to have some. I was working on
your John Harrington in Jasper county when I stumbled on Dukes..really great..
there was some confusion long ago about a Dukes and a Lukes..born about the
same time. no one was really sure
there was two..Luke M belongs to Michael and Dukes belongs to Aaron. It is
shown as Duke Allen in book. Would you
know Dukes wife's last name? I know it
is Mary ??? Where did you find him l840 census? I only
have the children shown on 1850 census, was there one older than Jane b

have..Glad we found our DUKES!!!! My

Hi Pam,
Thanks for sending your printout on Dukes family. It sems there is some
confusion on the daughter Mary b 1848 and Sarah F b 1849.. John Weeks Jr seems
to think they are one and the same..showing a name change?? what do you think?
I know this happens I have both in my
records but do not know which is correct.
The AAron and nancy I am referring to is the older AARON who was married
to a Nancy. I had no last name and then you and John supplied the Esther
Arledge for me.. I was told she was Nancy Esther??? Every old deed and census
calls her Nancy?? Did you get any copies
of the book, WEEKS background and Beginnings that I sent to John Weeks jr? I can send if you give me your address.. I am
new to computer but I have the data to send. I live in Caldwell,Texas 77836..
The older AARON WEEKS is the son of William WEEKS b 1757 NC..called William of
Newberry and Anne Elleman. He had children MICHAEL....Emily...Nancy b 1790, Isaac, Samuel Sampson, Elizabeth,Anne AAron Jr and
Duke Allen..Let me know about sending you the pages. thanks, Lilly Hogan

Aaron Weeks
Sr of Edgefield County SC
Facts &
Fallacies
There are
several myths regarding Aaron Weeks Sr, who died in Edgefield County SC during
1824, and regarding his family that have become commonly related as established
facts by many genealogical researchers, although they are based entirely on
errors in existing secondary and lower literature sources. (Wooley)
* That Aaron Weeks Sr had a daughter named
Nancy who married Solomon Walker.
o Aaron Weeks Sr did not have any
daughters named Nancy.
o It was Aaron Weeks Sr's widow,
Nancy, who remarried to Solomon Walker.
* That Aaron Weeks Sr had a son named Luke
Weeks or Duke(s) Allen Weeks.
o Aaron Weeks Sr did not have any
sons named Luke.
o He did have a son named Duke or
Dukes.
o Duke or Dukes and Allen are two
separate individuals, both sons of Aaron Weeks Sr.
* That Aaron Weeks Sr had a son named
Michael.
o Aaron Weeks Sr did not have any
sons named Michael.
* That the wife of Aaron Weeks Sr has been
proven to have been "Esther or Nancy ARLEDGE".
o There does not appear to be any
supporting documentation for Esther Arledge having been married to Aaron Weeks
Sr.
o There likewise does not appear to
be any supporting documentation for the maiden name of Aaron Weeks Sr's wife,
Nancy, having been Arledge.
* That there wss a MARY Weeks in the will
of Aaron Sr who qualified as an administrator to the estate.
o This appears to be another error
introduced by the publications of Mr Wooley.
o Although admittedly difficult to
read at first, when examined in the entire context of the will copies and
estate papers, it becomes clear that the name written is that of Nancy, Aaron's
widow, and that this MARY is another misdirecting myth.
* That Aaron Weeks Sr has been proven to
have been a child of William Weeks Jr of Newberry & Edgefield Counties SC.
o This appears to me to be the most
likely lineage, but there is so far, to the best of my knowledge, NO
documentation what so ever to support this claim. PLEASE prove me wrong, if you
can!! (GRIN!)

Children and
Heirs of Aaron Weeks Sr
of Edgefield
County SC
James E
Wolley's 1979 book A Collection of Upper South Carolina Genealogical and Family
Records Volume 1 is the apparent source of the mythical Duke Allen Weeks. In
Matthews' petition there is a comma between the names Duke and Allen, just as
there are commas between the names Allen, Aaron, Isaac & Sampson. With the
two daughters, Eliza and "Emily who intermarried with your orator"
(ie: Simeon Matthews), Matthews' petition recognized seven children of and
heirs to the estate of Aaron Weeks Sr.
" ....
Duke, Allen, Aaron, Isaac, Sampson and Eliza all of whom are now minors."
Emily was old enough to have already married Matthews, born their daughter and
passed away.
Wooley's
information did not, apparently, extend past Matthews' petition and into the
response of the executors of Aaron Sr's estate, where Duke and Allen are
clearly listed as unique individuals!
AND where
Aaron's eighth child and sixth son, Jonathan, is included into the list of
heirs to the estate.
" .....
Dukes, Aaron, Jonathan, Isaac, Sampson, Allen and Eliza who has lately inter
married with Saunders Walker."
Notice the
omission of Matthews' deceased wife, Emily, from the list of heirs to the
estate in this section of the executors' rebuttal.
Thus we have
a complete list of the children and heirs, both living and deceased, of Aaron
Weeks Sr of Edgefield County SC. The estimates of birth dates and other vital
statistics are from census and other records and are still mostly unproven.
Supporting data and citation will be added in a future update.
* Emily - born 1805-1807; married Simeon
Matthews on or before 1823-4; died 1824 Edgefield Co SC
o One child, Nancy Matthews, died as
infant.
* Jonathan - born 1807-1810
* Dukes - born 1808; married Mary Arledge
1828-1830; died 1880-1884 probably Jasper County MS.
o Eleven children.
* Eliza - born ca 1814; married Saunders
Walker 1827-1828
* Allen - born 1815-1818; married Elizabeth
____; died ca late 1860, probably in Abbeville County SC
* Aaron Jr - born 1819-1820; believed to
have married Mary A West on 21 July 1840 in Richmond County GA.
* Isaac - born 1822-1823
* Sampson - born 1823-1824
We know from
the estate papers that Duke, Allen, Aaron, Isaac, Sampson and Eliza were all
minors and under guardianship at the time of Matthews' petition in May of 1828.
So they must have all been born after 1807-1808, assuming 21 to have been the
age of legal majority at that time.
Duke Weeks
left SC with his wife's extended family and moved to Wilcox County AL in the
early 1830's. The other children appear to have resettled in Abbeville County
SC and are found on census returns there. I believe that Aaron Jr and his
family moved SC to Bibb County GA between 1850 and 1860.

JOHN "JACK"7 ARLEDGE (JOHN6,
JOHN5, WILLIAM4 ALDRIDGE, CLEMENT3,
CLEMENT2, JOHN ALDRICH/1) was born Bef.
1794 in SC, then Wilcox Co, AL HOH Wilcox Co, AL 1830; in 1840? in Neshoba Co,
MS by 1850 (both census listing and slave schedule); BLM record in 1859); Drady
and John both listed with 1870 slave schedule in "Nicholas Co, MS"
(ancestry.com), and died Bef. 15 Apr 1856 in lived in Neshoba Co, MS then
Wilcox Co, AL; Probate records in Wilcox Co, AL. He married (1) ??ELIZA?? MARTIN? Bef.
1810. She was born Abt. 1795 in this is
a *total* speculation based on naming patterns of subsequent generations, and
died Bet. 1820 - 1821. He married (2)
DRADY OWENS 18 Aug 1822 in Edgefield District, SC. She was born 1804 in SC (1850 & 1870
& 1880 census says) or AL (fam. trad.), and died Aft. 1870 in listed living
with Wm & Mary Smith in 1860 & 1870 census; 1870 Neshoba Co MS (Philadelphia).
Notes for
JOHN "JACK" ARLEDGE:
It seems
that John "Jack" had two separate families--
(1) a first
family of mainly sons (wife's name unknown), as reflected in the 1820 census:
HOH in 1810
Edgefield Co, SC census (along with John (Sr) and Isaac:
1810
SC/Edgefield Co:
031 ARLDREDGE, John, Jr.
(10100-00100-00) John born 1784-1794 and wife (same age range) with one son
born 1800-1810.
1820
Edgefield Co, SC census: 089 ALREDGE, John (310010-10010) John and wife born
1775-1794; one daughter and 3 sons born 1810-1820; one son born 1804-1810
Daughter is
Sara, and sons were MARTIN (b 1808-12), JONATHAN (bc 1811), WILLIAM (b. 1814)
and MOSES D. (b. 27 Aug 1820). Perhaps the first wife died in childbirth when
Moses was born or soon thereafter.
His first
wife's name is unknown. I have speculated, based upon the prevalence of the
names Eliza and Martin in subsequent generations, that her name MAY have been
Eliza Martin. Records for Martin families in the Edgefield County area should
be searched.
(2) Then on
18 Aug 1822, Jack remarried Drady Owens in Edgefield District, SC and started
another family. Records show that MARY (b 1825) was born in SC, while ELIZABETH
("BETSY") was born in AL in 1832, so the family must have gone to
Wilcox Co, AL. around 1830.
1830 census:
Aldridge, John Unknown Townships,
Wilcox, AL 1830: 0-0-2 (10-15)-2
(15-20)-0-1 (30-40)//2-1-0-0-1 (20-30) neighbors: Bailey, McIntosh [this is
John "Jack" Arledge of Edgefield Co, SC, son of John and Anna; his
second wife Drady Owens, and his children from first marriage plus one new
daughter]
By the
1830s, his older sons were grown: Martin married in 1835 in Monroe Co, AL,
Jonathan in 1836 in Monroe Co, AL, William married Mary Bowman in 1843 in
Wilcox Co, AL. (We don't have marriage records yet for Moses and Elizabeth
Prewett, though Moses states in a military affidavit that they were married in
Milam County, TX in 1848).
There are a
lot of land records in AL for this family in the 1830s.
By 1850
census, Jack (56 Farmer $750, b. SC), Drada (40 b SC) and their youngest son
JOHN FRANKLIN (10 b. AL [b 1839]) had moved moved to Neshoba Co, MS, where
daughters Mary (and husband William Smith) and Betsy (and husband Rev.
Greenberry McNeil) also settled. They are living next door to Paschal Martin,
age 36, b. SC--could he be a relative of John's first wife? John
"Jack" apparently died (where? probably in Neshoba Co, MS--see below)
around 1859-60. In the 1860 census, Drady is living in the household of
daughter Mary Smith. Howver, John's will is proved in Wilcox Co, AL
I recently found the evidence that links the
Wilcox Co, AL children (family #1) to the Neshoba Co, MS children (family #2)
in records regarding the settlement of John's estate, and names Martin (who
must
have been
the oldest son) as administrator:
Evidence
that Martin was son of John Arledge, and apparently was the administrator of
his estate: Wilcox Co, AL Land records, from Jack Buckelew
<jackelew@aol.com>: Aug 22 1860--Drady Aldridge, William W
Smith and
wife Mary Smith of Neshoba County Mississippi trying to collect "their
share" of the estate of "John Aldridge, late, deceased in Neshoba
County Mississippi." "Estate
now in hands of Martin Aldridge or his attorney of Wilcox Co AL". Book O
page 54. (I did not determine if the
"estate" was in Mississippi or Wilcox Al)

Is this the
JOHN ARLEDGE who acquired land (41 acres) through the Cahaba Land Office in
Alabama on 1 October 1835? Two weeks later (15 Oct 1835), an ISAAC ARLEDGE (his
brother?) acquired land there as well. In 1837, land patents were issued to
JONATHAN, MOSES, ISAAC, MOSES, ISAAC, ISAAC, and JOHN ARLEDGE for various
acreages (39-79 acres). There is another patent to JOHN ARLEDGE in July 1838
for 79.81 acres.
Is this the
John ALDRIDGE listed in the 1840 census in Wilcox Co, AL?
In October
1840, land patents were issued to JOHN and ISAAC ARLEDGE for 80.125 and 78.44
acres respectively.
These are
all the land patents issued to ARLEDGE through the Cahaba Land Office of
Alabama. All indicate a St. Stephen's Base Line.
In Nov 1858,
MARTIN ARLEDGE received a patent through the Greenville Land Office (also St. Stephen's base line) for 79.81
acres.
Elsewhere in
Alabama, land patents were issued to ELI ARLEDGE (October 1851 and January
1859) through the Lebanon and Centre Land Offices (Huntsville base line) for
39.93 and 39.97 acres respectively; to TILMON ARLEDGE in May 1837 through the
Demopolis Land Office (St. Stephens base line) for 40 acres; to JOHN ARLEDGE in
May 1850 through the Huntsville Land Office (Huntsville base line) for 40.15
acres; and to SAMUEL ARLEDGE through the Montgomery Land Office (St. Stephen's
base line) in December 1889 for 80.2 acres.

Notes for
??ELIZA?? MARTIN?:
There are a
lot of MARTIN families living in Edgefield Dist SC in the 1800 census. The
Arledge family was on p. 188, so the Martins who would have been their closest
neighbors and who had a daughter the right age would likely have been John
Martin (p. 188 11000-313010-13). In 1790 he was listed as Martin, Capt. John SC

Bet. 1808 - 1825, AL; in 1850, 1860 & 1870 census Neshoba Co, MS.
Notes for
WILLIAM M. OR W. SMITH:
1850 Neshoba
Co MS census says William M. Smith is age 42 and wife Mary age 22.
1870 Census
Neshoba Co, MS (Philadelphia P.O.) #432 JOHN P. ARLEDGE 39
m. far. 350
1000 Ala; Sarah Q. 26 f Ala; John W. 10 m Miss; Sarah F. 8 f
Miss.; Sarah
An 6 f Miss; Mary C. 2 f Miss.
This
household is very near #427 William M. SMITH 45 m. far. Ala; Mary
45 f. SC;
DODDY ARLEDGE 65 f. SC. It is clear the latter is Drady Owen
Arledge, so
Mary was probably her daughter.

OK, this may
be fun yet. I am not positive yet. I have that William Smith
married Mary
Carlisle Dunbar and had several children.
When I pull up the
Alabama 1850
Census I found William Smith married to a Polly. no last name.
The peculiar
part is that all the children of William and Polly as listed on
the census
exactly match the children of William and Mary Carlisle Dunbar.
Even to age
and exact spelling of the names. Bless
me I am still trying to
determine
where this Dunbar young lady came from.
If you can, go into AOL
Keyword and
ask for "Mary Carlisle Dunbar" and see what I mean.
I am
inclined to believe that Mary Arledge is the correct wife rather than Mary
Dunbar.
