Descendants of Sarah Arledge
Generation No. 1
1. SARAH6 ARLEDGE (ISAAC5, WILLIAM4 ALDRIDGE, CLEMENT3, CLEMENT2, JOHN ALDRICH/1) was born Bet. 1745 - 1755 in listed in 1790 census with 5 children. She married JAMES BISHOP. He died Bef. October 1807 in Fairfield Co, S C.
Notes for SARAH ARLEDGE: Sarah's descendant is Fay Kitchens
Graham Louer writes (May 1999) about the settlement of Isaac Sr's estate:
"sarah bishop and anne bishop received their shares in april and june of 1800, respectively. then, more than 3 years later, william, isaac, amos and jesse ginn [signing in his capacity of attorney for jesse wright, husband of huldah] all sign one receipt acknowledging receipt of their respective shares of the estate of isaac."
Notes for JAMES BISHOP: Graham Louer wrote in May 1999:
"Sarah m. after jan 1790 james bishop; she was appointed adm'x of his estate 19 jul 1799"

BISHOP
According to First Settlers of South Carolina 1670-1700 by Agnes L. Baldwin in 1985, the first Bishop came from England, arriving in 1682, and was the son of John Bishop. By the 1790 census for South Carolina, there were a number of Bishop families throughout the state. There was a Nicholas Bishop who had 200 acres in Craven County July 5, 1768. Nicholas Bishop served in the Revolutionary War as did his sons, Henry (Capt.),John (Capt.), Nicholas who entered the war at 16 years of age, William, and James. Henry was killed and John was a Prisoner of War for two months. (Roster of S.C. Patriots in the American Revolution. Bobby G. Moss. 1983). Another researcher has sent information claiming that James, the son of Nicholas, is not my ancestor, that he moved on to another place.
Camden District, S.C. Wills and Administrations 1781-1787. B. H. Holcomb and E. O. Parker. 1978, recorded Nicholas Bishop's will as being filed in Apt. 7, Pck. 205. The record listed Nicholas as a shoemaker. His wife was listed as Hannah, sons included Henry, William, James, Nicholas and John (minor). The daughters were listed as Dorcas and Hannah. The will was dated May 11, 1778 and proven April 21, 1787. Witnesses included Hugh Whiteside, William Jones, Peter Eoff. Sons William and Nicholas were executors.
No effort has been made to trace the children of Nicholas Bishop other than James. The children are listed below in order as listed in the will with appropriate birth dates of several who were listed as to age when entered the Revolutionary War. (Dates and other information taken from Roster of S.C. Patriots in the American Revolution by Bobby G. Moss.)
1. Henry m. Elizabeth. Henry and Elizabeth were killed during the Rev. War. He served as a Capt and was killed at Hanging Rock. (Bishop, Nicholas, S17847) 2. Dorcas 3. William He was in the battle at Cowpens and the battles at Rocky Mount and Hanging Rock, where his brother, Capt. Henry Bishop, was killed. (S30275) 4. Hannah 5. James (A James Bishop fought under Capt. John Mills) (Reference: S.C. in the Revolution by Sara S. Ervin) Roster of S.C. Patriots in the Am. Rev. listed a James Bishop as serving under Capt. Jacob Barnett, Col. Henry Hampton, and Gen. Sumter (A. A. 506A; M313) 6. Nicholas b. ca1763. Entered service from Chester District, having volunteered at age 16 as a foot soldier and was placed under Capt. Hugh Whitesides. After the fall of Charleston, he served under his brother, Capt. Henry Bishop and was in the battles of Rocky Mount and Hanging Rock, where his brother was killed. He was at Sumpter's Defeat. (S17847) 7. John (minor) b. ca1762. He was 15 or 16 when Charleston fell, as the British crossed the state, he and his four brothers retreated from Chester District to North Carolina. He was in the battle at Hanging Rock when his brother Henry was killed. He took the wounded to Charlotte. Cold weather caused him to return home for clothes, where he was captured by a Tory band and held prisoner for two months. He escaped, returned to his outfit and was in several more skirmishes.
JAMES BISHOP
My direct line has been traced back to James Bishop married Sarah Arledge, daughter of Isaac and Anna Arledge, and lived in Fairfield County, South Carolina. He was shown in the 1790 census with five children. I do not have the 1800 census information on this family. James had died by October, 1807, Fairfield Co., S.C. When James died, his daughter Sarah and her husband, Burrell Ivy, were not included in the property settlement. They sued for the estate to be settled. Sarah Bishop, widow, received one-third part of the several tracts of land and the children received one-sixth part of the remaining two-thirds part as follows:
1. Mary b. (over 45 in 1810) d. m. Burrell Ivy (26-45 in 1810) Listed in 1810 Fairfield Co. census with three daughters under 16 years of age, but not shown in the 1800 index for S.C.
2. Elizabeth b. d. 1830 Fairfield Co., S.C. m. Thomas Davis
3. James
4. Eli C. m. Jemimah Walker, dau. of Drury Walker
5. Sarah
6. William (located a Wm. Bishop (age 44, born S.C.) on page 270 of the 1850 Fairfield Co., census without a wife but with children Nancy (14), Margaret (12), Eliza (10), and Eveline(8). I do not know if this is the same William.)
Also in the HISTORY OF FAIRFIELD CO., S.C. book, I found a notation that Wm. Bishop was discharged in 1863 from the Civil War. Reason: Over age.

Reason: Over age..
Generation No. 2
2. MARY "JOSSEY"7 BISHOP (SARAH6 ARLEDGE, ISAAC5, WILLIAM4 ALDRIDGE, CLEMENT3, CLEMENT2, JOHN ALDRICH/1) was born Abt. 1772 in Fairfield CO, SC1, and died Bef. 1880 in Bradley, Polk Co, TN1. She married BURRELL IVEY Bet. 1808 - 1809 in Fairfield CO, SC1. He was born Abt. 1770 in Fairfield CO, SC s/o Henry & Nancy Ivey; 1810 Fairfield Co. census, and died October 1842 in Monroe Co, TN1.
Notes for MARY "JOSSEY" BISHOP: According to Fay Kitchens, Mary was listed in 1810 Fairfield Co SC census as being over 45 (her husband was 26-45), with 3 daughters under age 16. She is not to be found in the 1800 census in SC.
This would make Mary the age of her mother--I wonder if perhaps her widowed mother was living in her household as the woman over 45 in the 1810 census?
Notes for BURRELL IVEY: From Sue Maxwell
On Burrell Ivey, I am sending a descendency chart of three generations
and his will. His widow, Mary "Jossey" Ivey was found in the
1850 and 1860 census living in Polk Co., Tn. with her daughter Winney Ivey
McAllister. From this record, we placed her year of birth. Of the son,
John Ivey, he is found in the court records in Monroe Co. 29 Nov 1845 "John
Ivey to John Wilson; his fee simple interest in land to take affect after
death of Mary Ivey who has life estate in said land." After this time
disappears and nothing has been found. Of daughter, Susan Eldridge Ivey.
We do not know if she was named Susan Eldridge Ivey or maybe might have
married a cousin. Susan had quite a colorful life and was found in the
court records of. In 1850 living with her was a Catherine Eldridge, whom
we suspected might have been her daughter; however she would have been
b. abt 1832 and Susan was refered to in the will of her father as Susan
Ivey. We just do not know the connection here. Meg Bookout descends from
this family and was instrumental in checking the Eldridge family and found
you. Her e-mail address is
#38 James Calvin Sherman Adams was my grandfather #41 Cynthia Ann Adams was grandmother of Carol Garrison another researcher #33 is who Meg Bookout descends from.
Forgot to tell you: Burrell Ivey was in Fairfield county until after 1820; by 1825 he was in Monroe Co., Tn. where he died. His widow was found in 1850 and 1860 with her dau Winney Ivey McAllister in Polk Co., Tn. where she probably died. My grandfather James Calvin Sherman Adams moved from Polk Co., Tn. to Rhea Co., Tn. where he m. my grandmother; from their they moved to Birmingham Alabama where she d. He took the children and moved to Arkansas where he died in 1929. If I have left out anything let me know. Later Sue
