Descendants of William Arledge
Generation No. 1
1. WILLIAM /6 ARLEDGE (ISAAC5, WILLIAM4 ALDRIDGE, CLEMENT3, CLEMENT2, JOHN ALDRICH/1) was born Bet. 1775 - 1778 in [LDS-AF says 1773 & 1779] Fairfield Co, SC, and died Bef. 1820 in Fairfield? may be Bur. at Ford-Arledge Cem, near White Oak, Fairfield Co, SC. He married SARAH FORD /1 Bet. 1797 - 1805 in Fairfield Co, SC. She was born Abt. 1781 in Fairfield Co, SC d/o Gardner Ford ;(widow HOH in 1820 census), and died in lived near Jeptha, Moses, Samuel, Clement Jr..
Notes for WILLIAM ARLEDGE: William was the youngest child of Isaac Sr. Though there is no proof at this point, it seems likely that the William who married Sarah Ford was the same William Arledge. However, since there are a number of other William Arledges in the area, this is not absolutely certain.
Where was this William in 1800? Probably one of these:
In the 1800 Fairfield County, SC, census, a William is a head of household with one male 16-26 and 4 females under 16. This William would be born 1774-1784. I suspect this is WIlliam, son of William and Mary, since Isaac's son WIlliam would not have had 4 children by 1800.
This William, if unmarried, could have been living in the household of one of his brothers, etc. in 1800.
However, the same year, in the neighboring county of Kershaw, a WILLIAM ALDRAGE and ELIJAH ALDRAGE are listed as heads of household in the 1800 Kershaw Co, SC census (William: 00010-00001-00 and Elijah: 00100-00100-00). William b. 1755-1774; Elijah b. 1775-1784. Could Elijah be William's son? Younger brother?
William Arledge was named with Demy Greyham as executor of his brother Joseph's estate in March 1806.
In the 1810 Fairfield Co, SC census, a William is listed. 191 ARLEDGE, William (20020-01010-06). This puts his birth range as 1765-1784, with a wife the same age range, a daughter b. 1794-1800, and two sons born 1800-1810. ***Also, it shows another man the same age living in his household.***
A complaint filed in Fairfield Co, SC Equity Court: by Sarah Arledge and William Graham (in right of his wife Elisa Keziah Graham) who files a bill of partition and complaint againt Mary Mariah Arledge, Tilman Ford Arledge, William Gardner Arledge, Charlotte Jane Arledge, and Sarha Magdalena Arledge on 23 November 1821, that WILLIAM ARLDGE of said district departed this life intestate seized and possessed of vertain real estate in said bill described as containing 229 acres and one fourth acre, leaving said Sarah Arledge as widow and relict to one third part of said lands, and ...children entitled to their share of the remaining two thirds.. _____________ Is this the same William?:

Notes for SARAH FORD: Larue Foster "Here's one thought on Sarah Ford's marriage to William Arledge:
She was born ca 1781 and by 1826 had married Frederick Bailey, her second
husband. If we give a very broad range of dates to her marriageable age
from about 16 to 21, she would have married William approximately between
1797 and 1802, and William must have died before 1826. Does this help?
Please check death records for any William who died between 1797 and about
1824 (I'm giving her credit for grieving a while, but that didn't always
happen.) Please let me know what kind of file to send on the net to you." "I think a marriage between Sarah and William must have taken place
about 1800. She was a widow and remarried ca 1826. She was definitely married
by 1805 because she is mentioned in her father's will (22 March 1805) by
her married name." " Sarah Ford Arledge Bailey was living in Choctaw County AL with
her brother Dorrel (my direct ancestor), her mother, her sister Nancy and
Nancy's husband John Brown and assorted Grahams, other sibling Fords, etc.
The family (and kith and kin) migration occurred about 1835 -- at least
that's the BLM date of first land purchase for Dorrel. From court records
in Fairfield County, they left ca 1834. Dorrel's wife Susanna, died in
Greene County AL in September 1834, which helps place the migration more
closely. Sarah's second husband, Frederick Bailey was part of the migration.
The extended family settled in Sumter County AL in an area close to the
Mississippi border, which was later in Choctaw County when the counties
were divided." The 1820 Fairfield Co, SC census shows Sarah Arledge listed with 020000-21010
living in the same vicinity as Isaac, Clement, Clement Jr., Jeptha, Moses
and Samuel Arledge.1820 Fairfield SC census: 156 ALDRIDGE, Sarah (020000-21010)
_______________________ Received 28 Jun 1999 from Leo Loviza Pam Interesting the William Graham and Eliza Keziah Graham court documents.
There were Grahams in the Williamsburg area of SC that may be related to
other Grahams in and around the Butler, Choctaw CO, AL area of the mid
1850s. I could never find any connection between these Grahams and the
Narcisus Graham family of Connecticut. There are a lot of Eliza Keziah
named women in Choctaw CO, AL also, including this one and her aunt, Eliza
Keziah "double" Ford (as I relate to her. She was a sister to
the mother of Eliza Keziah Arledge, Sarah Ford, and married James Ford
of Fairfield CO, SC). There were only 4 sons of Narcisus and Unity Gayle
Graham--James and Charles moved to Sumter CO, AL where they died. Daniel
died at a young age and never married. John Christopher Graham stayed in
SC, married, and died in 1865. Here is some of the history of James Edward
Graham and Eliza Keziah Arledge Graham. Many of their children married
and lived in Choctaw CO, AL and neighboring MS. Eliza Keziah Graham Young
is buried in the Pushmataha, AL cemetery, but the date of death is not
listed: From "The Rev John Graham of Woodbury CT and His Decendants"
by Helen Graham Carpenter "During his youth, James Edward Graham lived on Jack's Creek in
Sumter District, SC. When he was about twenty, he moved with his father,
Narcissus and his brother Charles G. Graham, to the adjoining Richland
District. He married there Eliza Keziah Arledge, whose family--the Fords
and the Arledges--had land in the neighborhood of the Grahams. In 1820
the census for Fairfield CO in Richland District lists James Edward's household
as follows: one male between 16 and 26 (himself); one female between 16
and 20 (his wife); one male between 16 and 26 (his brother Charles G.)
and one over 45 (his father Narcissus). The next year Charles G. married
the sister of James Edward's wife. Like their father, the two brothers
were chiefly interested in the buying and selling of land. In 1823 and
1824 they bought together several tracts in Fairfield Dist on Morrison's
Creek. On Dec 11, 1823, they acquired 150 acres for $1100 from Robert L.
Ford "lying on Morrison's Creek adjoining lands of John Brown husband
of Jane Ford) and others. This land inherited by Robert Ford from his father
Gardner Ford". On Jan 24, 1824, they bought 28 acres for $1400 from
Frederick and Sarah Bailey (James Edward's mother-in-law), the land being
part of Gardner Ford's estate and "lying on the waters of Morrison
creek, adjoining lands of Magdeline Ford, Leroy Ford, Issac Arledge, and
Elihjah Ivey". On Aug 9, 1824, they purchased 240 acres on Morrison's
Creek for $1800 from Elijah Ivey, land which adjoined their own land. The
father, Narcissus Graham, witnessed the first and last deed. Narcissus
Graham died early in 1829 in Fairfield CO, and James Edward was the administrator
of his estate (Will Book G, page 178, Mar 2, 1829). In 1835 the two brothers
left SC with their families and settled in Sumter CO, AL. James Edward
bought his first land there on May 19, 1836---one tract of 80 acres for
$500 and another tract of 400 acres for $5000. Charles G. also purchased
land the same day and in the same township. On March 14, 1837, James Edward
acquired 120 acres for $1500; and on Mar 14, 1839, he bought 80 acres for
$500. The last purchased recorded is 497 acres for $5000 on Feb 15, 1841.
The only sale of land was on Aug 25, 182, when he and his wife sold 120
acres for $2000. No record of James Edward's death can be found. It probably
occurred in 1847, for his estate was administered in December of that year
by his widow, Eliza K. Graham, in Sumter CO, AL. The amount due his heirs
from the estate was $2748.87. A few years after his death, Eliza K. Graham
married (2) Robert Young and lived in Choctaw CO, AL until her death. James
Edward had 10 children. Four of them went further west to MS, and it has
not been possible to trace their decendants. The rest of the children remained
in Sumter or Choctaw CO, AL." 1840 census of Sumter CO, AL, page 144

Children of WILLIAM ARLEDGE and SARAH FORD are:
i. ELIZA KEZIAH7 ARLEDGE, b. 1805, Fairfield Co, SC--went to Jasper Co, MS2; d. if oldest daughter, b1804-1810 acc to 1820 census; m. JAMES EDWARD OR WILLIAM GRAHAM.
Notes for JAMES EDWARD OR WILLIAM GRAHAM: One document Graham Louer gave me said her husband was James E. Graham, but an 1823 Fairfield Co, SC Equity Court document says "William Graham in right of his wife Elisa Kesiah Graham".
2. ii. TILLMAN FORD ARLEDGE, b. Bet. 1805 - 1810, [LDS-AF says 1814] s/o William Arledge and Sarah Ford; SC; AL; ARK; d. he or later TF Arledge served in CSA Co F 5th Ark Inf Pvt & Sgt.
3. iii. WILLIAM GARDNER ARLEDGE, b. Abt. 1810, SC; then to Campbell Co, GA (1830) then to Arkansas Territory by 1833; d. Postmaster and Magistrate; closely associated with Tilman F. and Austin D..
4. iv. MARY MARIAH ARLEDGE, b. Aft. 1810, [one source says 1806] Fairfield Co, SC; went to Choctaw Co, AL; d. if second daughter, born after 1810 acc to both 1810 and 1820 census.
5. v. CHARLOTTE JANE ARLEDGE, b. Bet. 1810 - 1814, to Jefferson CO, TN then to Poinsett Co, AR; d. six children.
vi. SARAH MAGDALENA ARLEDGE, b. Bef. 1820, may have died young; only 3 daughters listed in 1820 census.
Generation No. 2
2. TILLMAN FORD /7 ARLEDGE (WILLIAM6, ISAAC5, WILLIAM4 ALDRIDGE, CLEMENT3, CLEMENT2, JOHN ALDRICH/1) was born Bet. 1805 - 1810 in [LDS-AF says 1814] s/o William Arledge and Sarah Ford; SC; AL; ARK3, and died in he or later TF Arledge served in CSA Co F 5th Ark Inf Pvt & Sgt. He married (1) EMILINE ???. She was born 1827 in TN3. He married his cousin (2) LYDIA ARLEDGE Aft. 1832, daughter of ISAAC ARLEDGE and LYDIA ???. She was born Abt. 18024, and died Bef. 1847 in mentioned as "decd" in father's will.
Notes for TILLMAN FORD ARLEDGE: There were evidently two cousins named Tilman F. Arledge born in Fairfield Co, SC during the same time frame. One went to TN (the son of Clement and Martha Guinn/Ginn Arledge), while the other (the son of William and Sarah Ford Arledge) ended up in Arkansas. One of them stopped in Alabama along the way. Trying to sort out which records are for which Tilman is difficult.
In 1837, one of them was in Choctaw Co, AL
Where in 1840 census?
In 1842 in Franklin Co, TN a Tilman (probably Clement's son) married wife Martha Green
In 1850 & 1860 another Tilman is in Poinsett Co, AR with wife Emelina; census records show children starting 1845 born in Arkansas

The William G. and Tilman F. Arledges who went to Arkansas were brothers--sons of William Arledge and Sarah Ford of Fairfield Co, SC, according to Graham Louer. Apparently, according to Louer, this Tilman F. Arledge first married his cousin Lydia Arledge, sister of Austin D. Arledge. This would explain the connection to Austin D. in Arkansas (see below).

[The William aged 23 above would be Tilman's son by his first marriage to Lydia Arledge] ____________________
I would hazard to guess that the following Tilman F. Arledge is the son of William and Sarah Ford Arledge, since his mother Sarah remarried Frederick Bailey after William's death:
Fairfield Co, SC: 1830 deed between Tilman F. Arledge of Fairfield District and Frederick Bailey: Tilman Arledge in consideration of $200 conveys to Bailey one half of the certain tract of land bought in copartnership by myself TF Arledge and James Arledge from Osborn Jefferies containing one hundred acres south by the road leaving from Mickle's Ferry to Columbia west by land belonging to Thomas Muse Deceased, east by the road leading from Winnsborough to Camden dated 21 Jan 1830 wit. Philip H. Pickett, William L. Sepechey (?), Thomas B. Lumpkin
BUT which Tilman F. is named in the following? I belive it is also Tilman Ford Arledge, son of William and Sarah, since the census records above indicate that his son, William, by his first wife Lydia Arledge, was born in Alabama--and there is no evidence that the other Tilman Arledge whose family went directly to Tennessee ever spent time in Alabama:
19 May 1836 Sumter Co, AL deed between Robert Pogue of Sumter Co and T. F. Arledge of the same state and county. Pogue, in consideration of $1000 paid by T. F. Arledge does convey a tract of land lying in Sumter County, AL, 80 acres.
Therefore, the Tilmans in all the Alabama records would be the same Tilman Ford Arledge.
Notes for LYDIA ARLEDGE: Her death preceded her father's.
Fairfield SC court case: LYDIA ARLEDGE, Charlotte Broom by Isiah Hinnant, Lucas A. Broom, William Arledge, Isaac Arledge, Eliza Hughes, J.H. Hughes, John Arledge, Austin D. Child of TILLMAN ARLEDGE and LYDIA ARLEDGE is:
vii. WILLIAM G.?8 ARLEDGE, b. 1837, AL (from 1860 census in Arkansas with father); d. Served in CSA Co.E 3rd Confed. Inf ARK Pvt [OR Co F 5th ARK Inf Pvt].
Notes for WILLIAM G.? ARLEDGE: This William is likely to be the one named in the 1896 land record below.

Notes for WILLIAM GARDNER ARLEDGE:
Was William G. married twice? The ages of his daughters in the 1840 census (below) do not jibe with the age of wife Elizabeth Polley nor their marriage date.
From Linda Davenport:

1830 Campbell Co., GA Census for Robert Polley does not list Elizabeth. I show date for the marriage of William G. Arledge and Elizabeth M. Q. Polley as April 30, 1830. William & Elizabeth had a daughter, Susan born about 1841 in AL. They later moved to Sabine Co, TX. If you are interested in this line, please contact me. I don't, however, have any other info on Susan.

Wed, 30 Sep 1998, Linda wrote again: Basically, everything that I have on this ARLEDGE was researched by Jimmie Willis Hanks, now deceased. Jimmie, a POLLEY descendant, began her research when she was about 15 in about 1930. She gave me a xerox copy of her typed work.
The only 'proof' she shows is for Susan C. ARLEDGE's birth and birthplace as 1850 Poinsett Co., AR.
What I have is:
1820 Chester Co., SC Census lists Robert Polley with "Elizabeth" being one of 4 females under 10.
1827 Land Lottery of GA: Robert Polly of Morgan Co., GA drew land.
1829 Campbell Co., GA: Robert Polley ... 'On Oct. 24, 1829 Robert's soon-to-be son-in-law bought five slaves; on Dec. 29 he sold three of them to Robert. (This was W. G. Arledge) (Old Campbell records are in the courthouse of Fulton Co., in Atlanta, GA today.)' by Jimmie Willis Hanks
1830 Campbell Co., GA Census for Robert Polley does not list Elizabeth. I show date for the marriage of William G. Arledge and Elizabeth M. Q. Polley as April 30, 1830. Elizabeth was born July 30, 1811 and died April 30, 1869. She is buried in the Polley Cemetery, Sexton, Sabine Co., TX. (Sabine Parish LA is the neighboring parish across the state line of the Sabine River).
Jimmie lists Robert Polley as being appointed postmaster at Eutaw, Green Co., AR on Decemer 27, 1833. He served until the office was discontinued on March 15, 1834. (Information from the postal records in the National Archives GSA (NNFS).
Pam, Robert Polley stayed in the United States until about December 1840. He missed the 1835 Mexican Census taken in TX in 1835 and missed the 1840 Republic of Texas Census. I've checked typed copies of Sabine Co., TX Census records of 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880 & 1910 and cannot find any ARLEDGE families listed. A copy of the Sabine County Marriages by Blanche Toole shows a license issued on October 05, 1906 to Eliza Arledge and L. L. Spears. Both blacks and whites would have been listed at that time so I have no way of tracing these two. They were not in the 1910 Sabine Co., TX Census records.
I checked my POLLEY cemetery records and Elizabeth is the only ARLEDGE buried there of record. Tombstones before 1855 have crumbled beyond recognition. If you figure out which Arledge my William is, please let me know (even though he's not my direct line, I like to have everything in a row!).
I hope some of this helps. I'll be happy to share any other POLLEY info that you need but I tried to send what pertained.
Good luck & thanks for replying,
Linda King Davenport , Baytown, TX 281-383-3526 dlkkport@gte.net

H. Peck, through good management and energy, has become the owner of 180 acres of excellent [p.603] land, of which about forty acres are under cultivation, and eighty are in timber land. He was born in Jefferson County, Tenn., in 1834, and is the eldest of a family of six children born to the marriage of William R. Peck and J. C. Arledge, the former a Tennesseean, and the latter a native of South Carolina. The latter attended school in Columbia, in her native State, being a schoolmate of Gen. Wade Hampton. The parents were married in the latter State, and in 1846 removed to Poinsett County, where they resided on a farm in Bolivar Township until their respective deaths, in 1846 and 1872. The early educational advantages of T. H. Peck were somewhat limited, as he remained faithfully by his mother, assisting her on the farm until he was twenty-five years of age. In 1869, he was married in Crittenden County, Ark., to Miss Mary M. Dean, a native of Mississippi, whose death occurred in 1870. she having borne Mr. Peck two children: William L., who is married and resides in the county, and George W. In the latter part of 1870 Mr. Peck was married, in Poinsett County, to Miss Mary S. Ware, of Middle Tennessee, but after bearing one child, Mary O., she died in 1873. He espoused his third wife, Miss Mary E. Allen, a native of South Carolina, in 1875. In 1861, Mr. Peck enlisted from Poinsett County in Company C, Capt. Benjamin Harris' Company, and was in the battles of Shiloh and Belmont, being wounded in the former engagement by a gun-shot. After serving one year, he returned to Poinsett County, and for some time was engaged in buying and selling land, but for a number of years has given his attention to farming. He is an active politician, voting the Republican ticket, and has served as magistrate of his township for seven years. He has always been deeply interested in schools, and for a number of years has been a member of the school board. He belongs to the Agricultural Wheel.

C. Brookfield, a careful student, a fluent speaker, and an able and successful lawyer, is a pioneer citizen of Northeast Arkansas, born in Lawrence County, Ark., July 14, 1829. The Brookfield family are of Scotch and English origin, and were early emigrants to America. Isaac Brookfield, Sr., the paternal grandfather of J. C., came with his wife, Hannah, from England, and settled in Newark, N. J., and there they resided until their respective deaths. James Campbell, the maternal grandfather of our subject, was of [p.321] Scotch Irish descent; and his wife, whose maiden name was Wilson, was descended from the Rhine Dutch, and was a sister of Col. Wilson, once speaker of the House of Representatives, who killed Col. Anthony in the State-house at Little Rock. Mr. and Mrs. Campbell emigrated to Lawrence County, Ark., in the fall of 1812, and were among the very first settlers. About 1821 he was elected sheriff of the county, which then comprised several of the present counties, and served for some time in that capacity. Isaac Brookfield, Jr., the father of J. C., through the influence of Bishop Asbury, came from New Jersey to St. Louis in 1819, as a missionary to the Indians. He was a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church, was thoroughly educated, and possessed that power and magnetism of speech and character so necessary to a successful preacher. In 1823 he married Nancy Campbell, and after locating settled in Lawrence County, where he continued his Master's work, and lived an earnest, zealous and consistent Christian life. In 1825 be began mercantile business, his dry-goods, which were shipped from New York, being six months in reaching their destination; his groceries were principally from New Orleans. He continued this business until his death, in 1844. His wife died in 1875. To them were born a family of six children.
J. C. Brookfield was reared on the farm, receiving his education mainly at Batesville, Ark. After his father's death, he closed up the business, and engaged in rafting on the St. Francis River, thus earning sufficient means to educate himself. When twenty-one years of age he began the study of law, and was admitted to the bar in Poinsett County, Ark., October 23, 1853. He immediately began practice in Harrisburg, and his practice, now extending over all adjoining counties, still embraces that court. In 1883 he moved to Jonesboro, where he has since made his home. At the opening of the late war he was captain of a company of militia, and once served as deputy clerk of Poinsett County, but has never aspired to office, rather choosing to serve his party than ask of it official favor. He has been for many years a leading lawyer of Northeast Arkansas, and enjoys, in its fullest extent, the love, respect and confidence of his people. He was first married, in 1855, to Susan C. Arledge, and to them were born five children, two now living: Mrs. Mary L. Roleson and Mrs. Ida A. Ware. Mrs. Brookfield died in 1871, and three years later Mr. Brookfield was married to Mrs. Julia F. Pope, who was the mother of one child, Albert M. Pope. Mr. and Mrs. Brookfield are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and he is prominent both as a Mason and an Oddfellow.
Children of SUSAN ARLEDGE and JAMES BROOKFIELD are:
i. MARY /9 BROOKFIELD.
ii. IDA BROOKFIELD.
