from this document that William and Alice Fallin Arledge's son John Arledge and
his wife Elizabeth Thomas Arledge (note: this is the Elizabeth who later
remarried Matthias Fellows in SC) may have been in *Frederick Co, VA* before
going to SC. I believe that he went to Fairfield Co, SC, fathered a
number of Arledge children (Moses, Isaac-who-married-Sally, probably
John-of-Edgefield, William-of-Kershaw, etc.), died fairly young, and Elizabeth
remarried Matthias Fellows.

From Graham Louer, Jul 1998:
born probably 1770-1774; probably daughter
of william arledge sr
ln a kershaw deed dated 14 nov 1807, william arledge sr of
kershaw co deeded 50 acres on granny's quarter creek to asa bell

sc] but now of
tennefsee", with the proviso that
"william arledge sr. and my wife mary arledge are to live o said 50a
during our lives or pleasure"
this is an almost sure indication that asa
bell is a son-in-law of william sr.
ln a
thus, it is PRESUMED that asa's wife was
ann, and, further, that asa and ann were married by june 1794.
ln an effort to determine the year of birth of asa's
wife [PROBABLY named ann, and almost certainly a daughter of william
arledge sr of those 2 deeds], the censuses were checked.

bell, william ... 1-0-2-0-0

presuming that asa was in sc in 1790 [from later
censuses, it appears that asa was born between 1770-1774, as was his
wife], he may or may not [at age 15-20 in 1790] be married in 1790,
though it seems unlikely.
he and his wife appear to have 4 young children in their
household in 1800, so he must have married not long after the 1790 census, if
indeed he was not already married in 1790, but living in the household of
another in 1790, married or not.
lf he, and possibly his bride, was living in any of the bell
households shown above, it could only be at frances or
george. lf at george, asa was not yet 16;
if at frances [who was probably a male, as there were 3 males of 16 or above, then asa's age might be either under 16 or 16+, both
of which could agree with probable birth in 1770-1774; thus, asa's age in 1790
might be either under 16 or 16+, and he may or may not have been married.

since william arledge in his 1807 deed
stated that asa was in tn in 1807, they must have moved there some time
between the 1800 census and the date of the 1807 deed. they appear to have returned to sc by 1810, however,
probably enticed by william's gift of the land, which was no doubt william's
intention, in order to bring his daughter back to sc.
a search was made for asa in tn census indices through 1840
[there is no extant 1810 tn census], but he was not found.

bell, asa .... 121011 101001
although the 1800 asey bell is almost certainly the asa of the
1807 deed, it is not at all certain, given the fact that the 1800 asey did
indeed go to tn, that the 1794, 1800 and 1807 asa is one and the same as the
1810 and subsequent ones, who show perfect age continuity, so that it is
virtually certain that the 1810-1840 asas at any rate are all the same person,
and, in my opinion, are the same as the 1800 asa, and thus also the 1794 and
1807 asa.
lt is my opinion that they returned from tn sometime between
1807 and 1810, but this time settled in
with land there.
the 1800 census indicates that both asa
and wife were born between 1755 and 1774. using
only that one census is only minimally helpful, so, remembering that the
1810-1840 censuses might not be for the same asa, of 1800
[it might be fruitful to check the proximity of asa to any arledges
during those 1810-1840 censuses, particularly 1810 and 1820], the following is
a track of the ages, and projected year of birth, of asa and wife found in
1800-1840. since they
are in the same age column in all censuses, only asa will be shown below, but
the information is the same for his wife:
1800 .... 26-44, thus 1755-1774
1810 .... 26-44, thus 1765-1784, but, combined
with 1800 data, actually
1765-1774
1820 .... 45+, thus 1775 or earlier, but,
combined with 1800 and 1810
data, actually 1765-1774
1830 .... 50-59, thus born 1770-1780, but, combined
with 1800-1820,
actually born 1770-1774
1840 .... 60-69, same result as 1830
1850 .... not checked
thus, l think, william arledge sr had one daughter who was born
in 1770-1774, and her name was likely ann; the birth years of
william's other children are discussed elsewhere. [july 1998]
note that no attempt was made to find asa
bell deeds; they might show his wife's actual name.

"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I served as a soldier

spy or emissary against the United States, or in any manner aid or abet the

of this Act, so help me God".
Inasmush as every person claiming Revolutionary service was
required to swear to his claim before fit and proper persons appointed for that
purpose by the Inferior Court of the county of his residence, and inasmuch as
those neighbors would know the truth or falsity of every claim, there can be
but little doubt that every man styled or identified as "Rev. Sol." or
"Rev. S." or R. Sol." or "R. S." on the Land Lottery
lists and records was actually a veteran and former soldier of the United
States army in the War of the American Revolution.
The following list includes all of those veterans (2069 in
number) who were "fortunate drawers" in the Third (1820), Fifth
(1827) and Sixth (1832) Land Lotteries. The spelling of first and last names
has been carefully checked against three original official sources. Whenever a
name did not appear exactly the same in all three places, those spellings which
were in agreement have been accepted as the veteran's correct name. The name of
a county following a veteran's name shows his residence as of the date of the
indicated Land Lottery.
Under the words "Fortunate Draw" the first column
indicates the Land Lot number and the second column indicates the District
number and the occasional number found in the third column indicates the

WILLIAM ARLEDGE, JR.:
Listed in 1800 SC Fairfield Co, SC census: ARLEOGE, #222 William 00100-22000-00. This would put his year of birth 1775-1784, and give him 3 daughters born before 1800. But then, who is the William in the Kershaw census?
In 1800 census in Kershaw Co, SC, a WILLIAM ALDRAGE and ELIJAH ALDRAGE are listed as heads of household in the 1800 Kershaw Co, SC census (William: 00010-00001-00 and Elijah: 00100-00100-00). William b. 1755-1774; Elijah b. 1775-1784. They are also adjacent to Asa Bell (10010-30010-00), b. 1775-84, who married Ann Arledge, b. 1775-84.

Graham uses a process of elimination to rule out Moses as the son of Moses, Isaac, Joseph, Amos and Clement. Therefore, he says, "This Moses was not, I think, in any of the enumerated Arledge households in 1790."
Also, I might
add, I feel strongly that since the use of the Moses name began with Elizabeth

Graham Louer notes that a Moses Arledge is listed on the 1792 Fairfield Co, Tax Roll, with 25 A of second quality land and 425 A of 3rd quality land. He would seem to be very young to have this much land, unless inherited.

In 1820 Fairfield County census, there is a listing for a Moses ALDRIDGE on p. 156 (210001-23101) and two listings for Samuel ALDRIDGEs, one on p. 152 (000100-20100) and one on p. 157 (220011-00001).

1847 Will of Isaac Arledge Junior (Vol. 3 p. 10 Office of Probate Judge, Fairfield Co, SC): the full text is in Franklin Rudolph Aldridge's Aldridge Records (Vol. II, p. 200). Summarized here (it's very long):
1st item: 200 acres on which my dwelling house stands, to my beloved wife LYDIA ARLEDGE. Also to her the following negro slaves: Jack, Sam, Dave, Phebe and Souvinia; also all the household and kitchen furniture, 2 good horses or mules, 2 cows and calves, and all my hogs--also the blacksmith's tools, and as many of the plantation tools as may be necessary for her, and a plentiful supply of provisions for one year....
Item 2nd: I have made advances in property or money to some of my children as follows: to son James ARLEDGE deceased $3500; to daughter Charlotte BROOM $2500; to WILLIAM ARLEDGE $2400; to ISAAC ARLEDGE $2000, to ELIZA HUGHES $1500; to JOHN ARLEDGE $800; to LYDIA ARLEDGE $500 to Austin D. ARLEDGE $300. Asks that these advances be taken into account in the division of his estate so that there is an equal division of property among his children.
Item 3rd: Wants his whole estate, both real and personal (except what is given to his wife) to be divided into eight equal shares.
Item 4th: Gives and devises to grandchildren (the children of deceased son James), one of the eight shares.
Item 5th: Leaves one of the shares to Robert BAILEY, in trust for the children of my deceased daughter LYDIA ARLEDGE.
Item 6th: Leaves one share to JOSIAH BINNANT, in trust for the use, support and maintenance of daughter CHARLOTTE BROOM during the time of her natural life, and at her death to be divided among her children.
Item 7th: One share to daughter Eliza HUGHES.
Item 8th: Remaining four shares to executors, in trust for sons Isaac, John, William and Austin D. ARLEDGE for their use, support and maintenances during their natural lives, but not to be subject to any of their present or future creditors...[If any of these sons dies childless, then that share shall revert back to the family and be equally distributed].
Item 9th: Buggy and harness to wife.
Item 10th. It is my wish and desire that the money going to my daughter Charlotte Broom shall be invested by the trustee in negroes for her
Item 11th: Names friends Nicholas A. PEAY, George HUNTER and William E. Rofs (Ross?) as Executors. Written 20 June1847. Witnesses John J. Myers, Charles Slemaker and John A. Kennedy. Date proved not found. Recorded in Book No,. 19, p. 205. Fairfield Co, SC.

I found this through searching the Tennessee GenWeb archives for "Arledge." The letter below is from the book THE KING, CLOUD AND ALLIED FAMILIES by T. J. King. I think this Isaac Arledge mentioned of Fairfield Co, SC, was probably the Isaac Arledge (son of Isaac SR and Anna, born c. 1770 and died 1847, with a will in Fairfield Co, SC) who married Lydia. In the Fairfield County Records, there are these listings involving Isaac Arledge and William Cloud:
> 1826 Isaac ARLEDGE from William CLOUD, Power of Atty, Bk

> 1838 Isaac ARLEDGE from William CLOUD, Letter, Bk NN, p. 84
I imagine the following letter, which is archived on the TN GenWeb page, is the same as the one listed in Fairfield Co, SC Book NN (above).

To: John E. Cloud
Dear Sir:
I
recd. your letter rote the 4th day of June and mailed the 7th in 24 days which
gve me great satisfaction to hear that all was well. I duly observed the
contents of your letter and your wishes therein contained and what you said
about the land and it was thought there would be some dispute about the land
next to Bowels. and Isaac Aldedge's fears about making
title for fear of a squabble there.
There is no need as you said of a warranty letter from me as Isaac Arledge has the power of ---ance to make the letter. Tell him and let him see this letter and he may ask Person -------- he could be liable in any way whatever, for I am sure every Neighbor there knows my land nearly as well as I do, say those that lived there when I left which was Henry Haygood, old Mr. Haygood and old Mr. Powell and sons and General Strawther and as it is well known.
Tell Seith Isaac Aldedges to make a warrantee title to you or who may wish to purchase the land in this ---- say all my rights and claims of land lying on the waters of Little Ceder Creek which I purchased of the Miles, it being part of a plot of land granted to old Look Ralls more or less, that to say all my claim, in making this title, Arledges will be perfectly safe and the purchaser also. And if they say they can't purchase it as above stated they may be safe by you and them applying in Winsborogh at the office where you or they, I expect will find my land on record, both deed and plat, if I am not mistaken, which will enable the purchaser to know the land. I had two hundred and six acres and three quarters to best of my recollection.
I have bin thinking how there can be any dispute in the land next to Mr. Bowel's, if mine is it must be at the lower part of his plantation next to where William Broom lived. I bot a small plot of land of Wm. Miles I believe it was about an acre or two but forget whether I ----------------on a branch below Bowels field by the branch is the line between me and Miles old place. I bot it to have excess to the water and give at the ----------dollars per acre. The branch as I have already stated was the line for a small --------the land maybe known it is a small piece of low ground on the west side of the branch and lies low and level, just below old Mr. Bowels plantation. I also had a small quantity (of land) on the east side of the same branch and one of my corners is just below the piece of low ground above named and on the east side of the branch next to Wm. Miles place which a Mr. Robinson owned when I left that state.
The least I was offered for my land when I was on it was eleven hundred dollars all down. This was offered by Mr. Powell & Caleb Powell son of old Mr. Powell knows my land as well as I did and if yet alive can show the whole of it if he would.
Give my complement to Mr. Powell and tell him to be so good as to show my land to anyone that wants to purchase and in so doing he will much oblige one who wishes him well. John tell Arledge to make a letter to all my right of land laying in Fairfield District, more of less, and if they wish to purchase , the land being well ----- will make no difference but they will still say they are afraid to purchase on the above named way in order to get your land for nothing.
If they will not purchase in the way above stated let it lie till they are willing, and I would not take less than a thousand dollars unless it was every dollar paid down, then you may take eight hundred all down and if they will not give it for my claim more or less, let it stay there til I come.
I am yours and give my love to all friends. I remain yours ------.
(Signed) Wm. Cloud
N.B. I wish you to send the amt of my land by John Whither
in money, notes or other property. If you sell.
(Signed) Wm. Cloud.

I wish you and my son John to sell my land lying on the waters of Ceder Ceek, it being part of the Look Ralls Plot. Which plot I left with Wm. Kitheart to give you when I left the state. He must pay you the taxes and for your trouble and when you a rite warrant the whole more or less, it being all my claims of the above named plot which I will warrant. In Witness whereof I have here unto set my hand and seal this 19th day of February 1838.

(1853, on Thorntree Creek, 340 a. Bk TT, p. 559). Interestingly, both are

was being sold by proxy or a Commissioner? The same year, 1852, his (presumed)
brother John also sold 348 a. to Nicholas Peay "By Comr" (Bk. TT, p.

William ARLEDGE "By Shff" of 200 acres on Thorntree Creek to James

Haven't really been able to dig up any more on Elijah. Tend to agree that there is probably a William conection. Here is what I have:
1. I recorded
Elijah as having died c1825 in Richland Cty. This originally based on
following.
A History of Richland County by Edwin L. Green Vol 1 1731-1805, pg 291 has:
"Page 344. Elijah Arledge. Estate divided, February 2, 1825. Wife: Clara.
Sons: William and Cullen."
Possible William Connection. But a re-read of
following references indicates this Elijah died c1817. Some South
Carolina Genealogical Records compiled by Janie Revill, pg
233 contains following entries.
"Arledge, Elijah--Richland Prob. Court-Bk. 1-13 Cit. 2 Jan. 1818

Notes for WILLIAM ARLEDGE:
From Edward Snyder <snyder@hal-pc.org>
Haven't really been able to dig up any more on Elijah. Tend to agree that there is probably a William conection. Here is what I have:
1. I recorded Elijah as having died c1825 in Richland Cty. This
originally based on following.
A History of Richland County by Edwin L. Green Vol 1 1731-1805, pg 291 has: "Page 344. Elijah Arledge. Estate divided, February 2, 1825. Wife: Clara. Sons: William and Cullen."
Possible William Connection.
But a re-read of following references indicates this Elijah died c1817.
Some South Carolina Genealogical Records compiled by Janie Revill, pg 233 contains following entries.
"Arledge,
Elijah--Richland Prob. Court-Bk. 1-13 Cit. 2 Jan. 1818
Clary
Arledge--Adm'r. Bond: 8 Jan. 1818
S:
Heirs not shown"
"Arledge,

"Arledge,

pg.80-81 also has entries for Austin Arledge

John Arledge (1853),
(1828), Moses Arledge (1828), and Sarah Arledge (1822) all
Winnsboro and Joseph Arledge

other Arledges. Can extract these for you if you like.
In another letter, Edward Snyder writes (August 1998):
"Some South Carolina Geneaology Records" compiled by Jane Revill notes "Arledge, William--Cit. 18 Feb. 1831 Richland Prob. Bx. 1-14 Mary Ann Arledge, Adm'x. Bond: 23 Feb. 1831 S: Richard Henning
Letter in file written by William
Arledge from
William may be Cullen's brother. My rationale is that the letter
was written to one Needham Dudley who also was one of the signers of Clary
Arledge's Adm'r. bond In Richland Probate Court re. Elijah Arledge in 1818. I haven't figured out who Mary Ann
is yet. Pretty shaky I know! Granted, the act of writing a letter from
Greensborough doesn't necessarily mean William was resident there but it is
likely that he was for a while. I was not able to find William in the 1820 or
1830
PW's transcription:
In envelope addressed to: Mr. Needham Dudley Senior,
January 8 1827
Dear Sir, I have taken this opportunity of writing a few lines by Mr. McDaniel to you to ask a favour of you to me. I have sent inclosed in this letter William C. Reiders Receipts and I want you to settle with him for me and I don't want you to take any note or account Except it is proven or acted on according to Law and what is due me I want you to send me the money or the papers by Mr. McDaniel and settle with D. Wilson the Best way you can this leaves us all in health Mother sends her respects to all the family and self
William Arledge
NB I want you to settle with David Wilson that he owes me for work done on Samuel Peirces house $20.00

Notes for MARY ANN ???:
On 25 Apr 1999, Edward Snyder <snyder@hal-pc.org> wrote:
History of Jefferson Co. FL: There was only one Arledge listed -
Mary A. Arledge was listed as donating $50 to the local Presbyterian Church in
1840. That most certainly was Mary Ann Arledge, William's wife.
