We first meet Yoh in the cemetary while Manta was walking home from school, he was hanging around with his friend ghosts, and scared Manta! the next day, when Manta was starting class, the teacher said there was a new transfer student, Yoh Asakura, Manta gets freaked out and tells people he saw him with ghosts and no one believed him, so Manta wanted proof, he stalks Yoh after school, Yoh walks to a pond and stares at it for many many many hours...Manta is going crazy because he didnt go anywhere or do anything!, finally Yoh yawns and Manta yells out of stress, and hides behind the wall so Yoh wouldn't see him, when Manta looked back, Yoh was gone and drives Manta crazy again.
The next day, Manta asks Yoh infront of his classmates if he was at the cemetary talking with ghost, Yoh denies it all and everyone laughs at him. Later he goes back to the cemetary to see if Yoh was there, instead got beat up by Ryu and his gang, the next day Manta has a black eye and banaged arms, so Yoh decides to get revenge, because Yoh can't stand good people getting picked on by other people. Yoh goes with Manta to wait for Ryu and Manta didn't want to go but Yoh tied him up, later Yoh and Amidamaru have Unity and beat up Ryu and his gang, so Manta and Yoh become friends.
Background:
Yoh is a Shaman,his family is famous for its strength as shamans, Yoh is a guy that likes to listen to music and sleep he's mellow, Yoh is also the kind of guy who likes to take it easy, some people would call him lazy but hes really not, he's also a loner before he met Manta at least, at age 10 he had a fiancee(Anna) she wanted him to become Shaman King so she would be the first lady Shaman and be famous and rich. So she trained him up good. When they first meet she told him to die and he cried, Yoh does Love Anna and Anna does love Yoh too. Yoh is pretty much a happy go lucky kind of guy, Yoh is a very kind-hearted person who cares a lot about other people. Manta was his first friend that wasnt a spirit, then he met Ren,Horo,Ryo,Faust and more and they all became friends. Ren was actually his rival at first but became friends.

beware of Spoilers!!! Yoh wants to become Shaman King because he wants to save the world from evil, and also so that Anna can be Shaman Queen and live a lazy life together, so Anna trains Yoh up really good with weights, running, etc (its like torture) Yoh's rival in the Shaman Tournament at first is Ren/Faust/Horo Horo....in the middle of the series we meet Hao we dont no much about him, expect he hates humans and looks a lot like Yoh...he is loking for people to join his team... he is very strong also and wants Yoh to become stronger. Later we find out Hao is actually over 1000 years old because he can reincarante himself every 500 years , he had 3 life times already, trying to become Shaman King, and failed all 3 times, we find out that Hao is Actually Yoh's twin brother and Hao wants his other body back, so he wanted Yoh to be as strong as him to merge with him, and the end Yoh and Hao are left, they fight and Yoh slices Hao in half and that was the end.
