| The Wheel of The Year is the wiccan holidays that go through the year celebrating the seasons and the goddess and god. The Wheel can either start at Samhain or Yule since some consider Samhain as the new year as others consider Yule as new year. Samhain (Hallows Eve, prenounced Show-een) it is the wiccan new year where the lines between the living and dead loosen and become undone. it is a time of reflection and to remember those who have passed on and what has happened durring the last Wheel. It is also the passing of the god as the goddess prepares to give birth. Yule (mid-winter) the night is at it's longest, the goddess gives birth to the god. It is tradition to light a Yule Log on this day as we celebrate the birth of the god and the half way point in winter as the sun makes it return. The Pine Tree is also represented at Yule and was origonally a pagan symbol for Yule until it was converted into a cristian symbol. Gifts are also pagan and the gifts are for the deceased but now adays the gifts can also be for us living (yepee!!). Imbolc (festival of light, candlemass) the goddess and god as children. This is a celebration of the virgin goddess and the first signs of the return of the sun and light. light and candles are main symbols. Candles can be white, yellow, or pink. Ostara (Eostre's Day, Spring Equinox) the day and night are in balance, the egg and rabit are the symbols for Ostara. Rebirth and Life play a big role. The goddess and god are in their youth stanges. Winter is over as the light takes over the darkness. Baltane (baltaine, may day) the union of the goddess and god (marriage). The May Pole is the main symbol for this day. Fertility and life are celebrated as well as the sacred marriage of the goddess and god. Litha (mid-summer) this is the longest day of the wheel and shortest night. The goddess (in her mother stange) is pregnant with the god. The preperation for the Harvest has begun. Lughnasadh (first harvest, lammas) the 1st harvest has come and wheat and graines are the main symbols. This is a time to honor the parent goddess and god. Mabon (fall equinox, 2nd harvest) The night and day are in balence again as the 2nd harvest begines. Wine and grapes are main symbols. Celebrating the 2nd harvest, honoring the aging goddess and god and the spirit world. The darkness now starts to take over the light. |
